  • How does this compare to Sunrice?

Is there much difference between brands when it comes to rice?

    • Sunrice from Cambodia. Royal Feast from Vietnam. They're both about the same imo

      • +2

for some reason, sunrice jasmine 1kg variety is from Vietnam.
my wife likes the one from vietnam better, so only bought the 5kg when it is half price.
imo difference is the one from vietnam has better fragrant

    • +1

Buy Sunrice when they are on special. If they are not, buy these. Jasmine rice fanatic but with cost control. My advice,

    • -4

Much better than basmati, Jasmine is the best.

      • +12

I disagree, once you try a good basmati no other rice compares.

In fact jasmine these days seems very sticky and flavourless in comparison.

        • +1

Do you know of any good basmati brands you would recommend? My nearest international grocer has like 4 brands, and 3 of them are from the same company with a slightly different 'name' (e.g. gold vs premium) with the same price.

          • +1

@azorax: India Gate is usually ok. Daawat is also another one. Its based on preference to be honest. We usually try out a few different brands and see which one has the longest grains.

          • @azorax: India gate but make sure it is the SELLA variety.
This is a premium parboiled basmatic rice which is leagues ahead of the regular.

          • @azorax: Falak Basmati is best!

          • @azorax: Usually India Gate and Daawat are considered good but as they are costly compared some other lesser known but still good quality Basmati. If the nearest grocer has Chef Tasty brand Basmati try that one. It is around 50-55 AUD for 20kg bag and is very nice. I hope you will like it if you can get it.

        • +1

Will back up a basmati brother. Its especially good when you want to freeze some meals - doesnt reheat anywhere near as mushi. Just accidentally bought some jasmine rice after a few years and was reminded why I normally go basmati.

        • Just to add to the others, it's not the brand but the specific rice also matters. If you want a good one, try the "India gate classic".

PS: Go to an Indian grocery store to get it because prices on Amazon for this item will be extortionate. For your reference, the local store charges me something like $22 for a 5kg bag and it's $35 on Amazon.

      • +1

it depends what you are cooking, some meals require soft and lumpy rice (jasmine). others require rice which can separate easily and stay that way (basmati)

      • They are for different things. It's like saying white bread is better than hamburger bun

      • +1

A lot are choosing basmati for diabetic health reasons. Drs orders.

      • Completely agree.

    • +1

as an Asian - id go with royal feast.

      • +2

Have you tried Golden Phoenix from Asian grocery stores ? Just want someone's opinion to compare this to it because I bought Golden Phoenix before and it was super good but expensive.

        • +2

any rice from Thailand or Vietnam gets my thumbs up. :)

        • +3

stick with Golden Phoenix or Royal Umbrella…

    • +1

Not taste smell very good from last bought

    • +1

it could be right for the air and pollution in Vn but its doesnt mean vietnamese rice is not good , you can search the name " ST25" which has won world's best rice in 2019.

I am simply saying I would avoid as much produce coming from those regions as possible. I am not going to check each and every produce for their "pollution ratings" knowing that they are even polluting/poisoning their own people.

    • Better than air and water pollution in India. I take Vietnamese air any day.

      • -8

Thanks. I forgot to include India as well. Looks like more negs are coming that I would offend a whole lot more people from the Asia region.

        • +3

With your logic you can’t eat pork , as it eat own poop 💩

          • +1

@georgev: With your logic you would eat your own poop?

    • +5

You do realise the water and air pollution is more prevalent in the cities and less so in the farming/growing regions? Talk about ignorant.

      • -4

Less polluted in the farming/growing region than cities does not meant not polluted at all. For those developing countries the pollution will only get worse. Much much worse. Who is ignorant here?

        • LOL..

Do U happen to have a nuke bunker and a 10 acre block growing your own rice and veges? It's the way to go I heard.

And nah U don't offend. Everybodys different… Some more than others.

          • -1

@id: I happen to live in Australia.

            • @DarkOz: Really? Wowsers!

            • @DarkOz: People your T-levels are dropping and your are getting hysterical like wahmen. No pun intended, just wake up from your simp dreams.

Cheesus, people just cant have an opinion nowadays without getting offended. Some foods are better from said regions, some are not as good. Whats so controversial about this?

  • Taste like Jasmine Rice sunrice brand to me. Although I put bit more water. 1 cup rice : 1.25?

    • If I go 3 cups or more, 3 : 3.25, 4 : 4.5

      • -1

No it does not work that way. If measurement is 1 cup rice and 1.25 cups water, you need to increase with same proportion e.g. 2 cups rice then 2.50 cups water.

        • No, that's not right. Your base is proportional not your extra, which is constant. So 1 cup rice is 1 cup base water + .5 extra water. 2 cup rice is 2 cup base water + .5 extra water. Numbers subject to rice and preference, but the point is the whole rice:water amount is not proportional.

          • +2

            @blorx: Indeed.

A single rice:water ratio is misleading, because it fails to account for the fact that two different things happen to the water during cooking: some of it is absorbed, but some of it evaporates. And evaporation doesn't just scale up. If you double the amount of both the rice and the water, the amount of evaporation will remain roughly the same (assuming you're using the same cooking vessel) – so you'll just end up with soggier rice. There's a very useful video explanation here.

So, as blorx says, if your ideal amount for one cup of rice is 1.5 cups of water, then three cups of rice should have about 3.5 cups of water, not 4.5 cups.

            • @PeterA07: I cook in pressure cooker instead of electric rice cooker, so my measurements will always be different :)

    • +14

don’t you guys measure with your finger?

      • +3

I agree, there's no need to measure. Use the crease on the first joint of your finger.

        • +1

          You guys are amateurs. 😋

I earned my black-belt and can eyeball it now.

      • +3

        Always finger

      • double-check with finger typically use a cup though

      • The finger works better when measuring rice. These people are missing out

      • +5

I tried with the toe, wasn't as effective

        • +2

          you mean, finger toe?
Just make sure, you lay down on your stomach on the kitchen bench, it should be no dramas

      • +1

Sure do, just like my proctologist taught me.

  • Is this long grain?

    • In short yes. One of the fragrant variety long grain

  • Good quality rice is at least 4 dollars per kg.

    Expensive yes

  • +1

Tried this once and the fragrance level is quite low so similar to Sunrice. I find the other brand with a wheel logo is more fragrant but is more expensive

  • There a $20 off $120 spend going to load this up with a discount card making it just below $13 .

  • +2

$1.60 per KG. You couldn't grow it yourself at that price.

    • -1

      It's all plastic you know.

  • +3

(off topic) When I grew up as a kid in Hong Kong in the 80’s, they said Australian rice were the best. Now I’m living in Australia, I have yet to find a Grown in Australia rice brand here.

    • +3

Sunrice Jasmine rice was used to grow in Australia, not anymore !

      • When was that changed? So was sad

    • Probably all eaten by mice plague before you know it

  • +3

Best rice i know atm is Pegasus scented rice.. normally $70ish for 20/25kg bag at asian groceries.
Nice soft n good taste lil expensive though.
Once u eat this rice u wont wana eat any other rice brand.

    • AAAA, AAAAA rice really better but more expensive

Sunrice Jasmine is OK for me.

      • and i was here thinking you're screaming AAAAAA haha

    • +2

Can confirm, this rice is real nice. Also pigeon brand (AAA) is good too.

    • Looks like da bomb! Exactly what I have been looking for. A good scented Jasmin I remember from my childhood.

  • +4

I prefer the rice from Thailand, eg, Royal Umbrella

    • +1

      high five ~~

  • +2

Y’all sleeping on the Rose brand rice

    • +1

Rose brand is the best I have ever tried in terms aroma.
Panda brand has the best texture overall than Rose but less aroma.
Royal Umbrella has a very good balance on both, just make it overall good without signature.

(Based on my rice cooker and the way I cook)

      • U should try Pegasus u might change ur mind after.

  • If you are into jasmine you should shoot your shot and ask her out, worst she can say is no

Golden Wheel Thai Hom Mali Rice 10kg also on special $24 Thai rice.

    https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/61183/gold…

    • +1

Great spotting! I haven’t tried this as it’s unavailable in Woolies app (my location). Jasmine rice is from Thailand and thus the name, Thai fragrant rice. Jasmine rice is also referred to as Thai Hom Mali rice. It was originally named Khao Hom Mali 105 variety in 1954 in Thailand. The main feature of Jasmine rice is that it is a long-grained, white rice having a nutty aroma. I didn’t know that….

    • I purchase the GW Thai Hom Mali when it's half price for $20 at woolies

  • Still available at the same price on Woolworths Online, unsure about in-store.
