  • What makes this machine better than a $1,500 machine or even a $1,000 machine? Looking to upgrade my nespresso machine…

    • +3

Automatic grinding, tamping and has an auto steaming function. It's like a super-automatic but also not.

    • +3

      Watch this review.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz_5uRZy4FQ

Self Tamper and also, excellent milk steaming.

My wife hates tampering and milk frothing., so we are moving to this from a standard espresso machine.

Also, you can change the auto tamper manually to get 18g in, there are videos on this.

    • You can get an Oracle second-hand on ebay for around $800-$1000 reasonably regularly.

Otherwise, get something like a Bambino Plus (which has the automated milk frothing but not most of the other benefits of the Oracle) and a reasonable grinder.

    • It's so good being a semi-auto that the taste is good and my 7 year old is able to operate it to make coffee for me!

    • last black Friday the black 980 was sold around 1500-1600. which was pretty good

Jeeze, looking at past deals for this hurts.

    • +2

yeah, last year was great, now everything has a covid tax. Judging by shipping cost in the last month, I think this will go up again in base price next month.

      • sure will… unfortunately :(

    • Glad I got mine when they were around the $1600 mark!

Spend more on your grinder, learn about puck prep and even a cheap espresso machine will make great coffee. This machine will never make great coffee.

    • Have you tried one?

      • -5

I haven't. I agree these machines are a lot better than they used to be in their ability to make a good coffee. But they still use crap parts that will break down sooner or later. It's a disposable machine that's expensive. You will be left spending on repapir once the warranty is gone. On just throw it out and feel sad.

        • The argument was that "this machine will never make great coffee", not that it'll break after 4-5 years.

I've got 5 years warranty on mine & expect to replace it after 6-7 years. At least parts are readily available.

          • @Carrera1963: I agreed they are getting better at making coffee.

Just want people to realise in time this will have no value. Whereas a quality machine will have a high resale value.

        • If you haven't owned one, there is no point making such comments and criticism on the internals of this particular machine.

I've owned the Oracle for over 8 years now. I have had to replace the water pump. Guess where the pump was made? Italy.

The internals, solenoids, parts are all of good quality, I was surprised that so many of the parts were from Europe.

Bit expensive for a machine that can only make 11 espressos. Then what - skip?

    • Do you.. do you legitemitely think a coffee machine will break after 11 cups?

      • I was referring to the description in OP’s post.

    • $193.10 per coffee, bargain!

  • -2

Hmm. That's $193.10 per cup of espresso.

Might be better off with the 920 at that rate.

  • Prime day had this for cheaper… Bring on Black Friday sale I'd say.

  • +1

I would totally go for a gaggia machine and a eureka grinder at this price point…

  • True OzBargainers buy a fully automatic machine, gotta save time too right!

    https://www.costco.com.au/Kitchen-Laundry-Appliances/Small-A…

Perhaps I need to train my coffee snob level.

    • How long does it take to make 2 cups of coffee with the auto machine you linked?

It takes me 10 minutes to load basket and tamp and fill water heat machine and froth milk making 2 cups of coffee on my manual machine which i dont think it even has dual boiler

      • Probably 2 minutes, it's really time efficient which is great loading up a travel mug before leaving home in the morning.

        • sweet!

Wowsers… I bought this same model from TGG in Sept 2016 for $1599.20.

Breville must be loving the longevity of this particular model in the market. Kinda wish they'd drop some $$$ into R&D for a true V2 of this? The Touch doesn't count…

After ~5 years pump starts to get a bit laggy.

    • +1

Mine also got like that after about 5 years, I cleaned the Solenoids and it came good. A bit involved to do but plenty of YouTube's to follow. The group head seal and plastic water defuser behind it needed replacing in that time, but relatively cheap and easy.

In case anyone is brave enough to buy an old one someone "refurbished" on ebay for $820 here's the link https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/402978880674
I'd be suspicious as there are no real pictures of it, just stock marketing images.

      • Seems very good price, but new seller with zero review, you have to be very brave to spend that much, very risky!

    • +1

The pump goes weird because the pre-infusion uses an odd method of voltage control to achieve the lower pressure. To overcome it, I press the hot water button to let it run for 1 or 2 seconds. Then the normal coffee extraction does not suffer from pump lag.

I replaced my first pump on my 8 year old machine because of this.

      • That's exactly the symptom I was getting. My fix was to run a shot or at least the start of the shot without the group head in place, that kind of charged the water line and it was fine to use after that. Sounds like pressing the hot water button for a few secs may be doing the same. But for me, cleaning the scale buildup off the solenoids fixed it and I did not replace the pump.

      • Yes thats the same approach I've been using. Run a shot for ~10 seconds while the beans are grinding and the away she goes. At some point she'll need some more attention but ok for now
