AN IMPOSSIBLE MAZE
But the road will be hard.
For this is a maze like no other: a maze of mazes. Uncompromising and complex. Demanding and deadly.

A CATACLYSMIC CONCLUSION
It all comes down to this.
For it ends here-now-in the most lethal and dangerous place Jack has encountered in all of his many adventures. And in the face of this indescribable peril, with everything on the line, there is only one thing he can do.
Attempt the impossible.

According to some comments on Ozbargain, trying to claim cashback from Shopback is One Impossible Labyrinth…

Thanks Cam. Looking forward to this one. He'll have to ramp up the mayhem to outdo real life at the moment

Haha I really love every one of his books even though they are so out there… ;)

  • Bought one. Thanks!

True ozbargainers support their local public Library 😉

  • Oh he's almost finished this series? THANK GOD.

    • +2

Let’s hope we get another scarecrow, or the temple sequel he was talking about

Yes please I’ve hated this series despite liking his other novels

  • +1

The last two books in this series have been so meh. Think this will be a library one for me

  • Can't wait!

  • Read ice station as a teenager and remember thinking that it was interesting but not great writing. Any of his other books people recommend if I wanted to try out again with a fresh set of brains?

Stopped reading a few years back, but all of his novels read like call of duty in novel form where your protagonist/s are experts in every single firearm, vehicle, gadget and somehow have saved the planet or country numerous times.

Not that that's a bad thing if you're into that but don't expect Tom Clancy level of detail nor intrigue.

    • I haven't read past "4" in this series, so I don't pretend to be up to date with his current style. Even so, your experience sounds similar to my own teenaged take on it - the sets have gotten bigger, and the stakes higher, but I've found his writing style consistent throughout (he's really unleashed his inner Roman Catholic bashing conspiracy nut for this arc, at least in the first few)

This series reads more like Indiana Jones with guns.
I enjoyed the later books in the Scarecrow series. Also enjoyed Contest, standalone book about humans fighting aliens in a contest.

The Great Zoo of China is probably one of his more interesting books recently (in my opinion). It's got a big Jurassic Park vibe to it but as both a Matthew Reilly fan and a Michael Chrichton fan I enjoyed it.

    • I thought maybe his writing had improved, because I really liked his Jack West, Jr. series when listening as an audiobook. Then when the latest one came out and I read the actual book, I realised his writing didn't improve - it's the narrator that makes it better. Reilly is a fantastic storyteller, with stories that all feel like the best part of 90s movies, but you don't go and read them for literary flourishes.

Ice station, scarecrow and temple are my favourites
      Area 7 is good

Of his newer work I liked “the secret runners of New York”

Of the Jack West series, 7 ancient wonders and 6 sacred stones are great. But it’s hard to recommend because the last few have been so weak

    • Big fan here. I'd recommend having a go at The Tournament

    • I like his earlier stuff better. Contest was good, and Scarecrow.

    • I'd recommend River God by Wilbur Smith instead

    • The three body problem is sick. It's not COD though. Sci-fi

    These have been very enjoyable.

I better start on the Two Lost Mountains this week.

My faviourite of this series is the first one - Seven Ancient Wonders.

It's plot is self-contained and ends well. And the wonders are awesome.
Enjoying the rest too - fun adventure.

How can a labyrinth be impossible? It's literally one path.

  • Not sure if I'll even bother with this one. Two Lost Mountains was really quite a letdown.
