Looks like another great Amazon deal for a laptop based on the AMD Ryzen 5 5500U. The U.S. version of this IdeaPad 3 14" seems to have better specifications vs the locally available version with this CPU. This includes:

1.45wh battery vs 38wh battery
2.300 nits IPS 45% NTSC display vs 250 nits TN 45% NTSC display
3. AX Wifi 6 vs AC Wifi 5

Amazon does not seem to provide enough details, but I looked up the model number 82KT00AMUS and used psrefstuff.lenovo.com to find the specifications.

Despite being the same Zen 2 architecture, you can compare the performance of the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U(Renoir) with 6 cores, to the newer AMD Ryzen 5 5500U(Lucienne) with 6 cores and 12 threads below:

    https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-Ryzen-5-4500U-vs-AM…

    4500u scores 11232
    5500u scores 13639

Cpu benchmark should be banned from the internet for its shady bs

    • That's because of the hyperthreading. The single core performance is identical as one would expect from a 4500 with ht.

      4500U. 4700U. 5500U.

Hi, just advising you that hyper-threading is an Intel brand name feature which AMD doesn't use . Intel"s hyper-threading had a major security vulnerability called Foreshadow. When Intel patched it, it impacted performance. AMD uses a feature called SMT(symmetric multi threading). They may use both use the word thread but there are differences between the architecture, hence why the AMD Ryzen architecture is much better at multi-core workloads then other architectures at the moment.

        • I was using hyperthreading as a more generic term here, but yes AMDs is called SMT.

And stop fearmongering. Foreshadow was an old exploit that only impacted up to 8th gen, and was never going to impact consumers (like a lot of these speculative exploits).

AMD and Intel get plenty of vulnerabilities in silicon. Look a few new ones back in may 2021! https://siliconangle.com/2021/05/02/new-spectre-vulnerabilit…

AMD are currently better at multicore workloads (but worse at single) because they're fitting in more cores as they're on a much smaller node.

          • @incipient: I'm not fear mongerng in anyway. Just stating a fact that Intel Hyper-threading had a security vulnerability. I didn't say it wasn't patched, however it did reduce performance as indicated. It was recommended to disable hyper-threading prior to the patch in 2019.

            https://www.techradar.com/au/news/intel-cpus-can-be-exploite…

You last paragraph is very technically incorrect. AMD multi-core performance is superior simply because the SMT architecture is better then Intel's Hyper-threading. Being on a 7nm TSMC node is only part of the equation. I'm also not sure where you are getting the blanket statement that AMD is worse In single core, because this is also incorrect. AMD Zen 3 single core performance in desktop and laptop is up there with 11th Gen Intel whilst being at a much lower TDP and consuming less power. If you use Passmark as a reference you can see that the Zen 3 based 5800u has superior single core performance to one of the i7 11th Gen CPUs at a TDP of 15w.

            • @shellshocked: It was recommended in some instances in datacenters/virtualized environments, not for consumers. If an attacker can execute arbitrary code on a laptop, leaking data between threads isn't as much of an issue.

You brought up a "major security vulnerability" from two/three years ago, which is meaningless to consumers. Or, lets look at a new AMD spec vuln! Every week there is another of these, and they don't matter. https://www.extremetech.com/computing/321507-amd-discloses-a…

As this article says "Side-Channel Attacks Have Not Emerged as a Serious Threat". These are not a meaningful threat to enterprise, and a non-event to consumers. People will read what you write and panic. It's an issue filled with technical jargon and a non-event to consumers.

You are right on the single threaded performance, the Zen3 cores have really stepped up. Apparently I'm not up to date! x86 really needs to get its act together against the M1 however…far out!

  • having 8gb with no option to upgrade in the future is criminal imo

    • As mentioned in the specifications, there is one DIMM slot on the board so you can remove the 4gb DIMM, and add another higher capacity DIMM if needed.

  • Potentially dumb question, can you safely assume a PC like this would be eligible for Windows 11? (Given all the TPM confusing business)

  • Planning to get a laptop for work and maybe some light gaming. Which is more value for money? This or this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/637014

        • Isn’t that Ryzen 5 and not 7?

        • What is the url for the above machine?

      • Thx mate I will go for the other one. Cheers

  • What charger will this come with?

    • It will have a US power plug. Laptop power adapters have been multi-voltage for long time, you will just need a wall plug adapter from US to Au.

  • My brother in Ireland is looking for a laptop but this one doesn't ship there when he clicks through this link. Any idea how can I help in getting this for him and ship it or any other recommendations? Thank you.

  • I would really appreciate some help. It seems like a lot of people in Australia order from Amazon US. I have prime Australia, is it as simple as order from the US site with your Aus prime account and the item will arrive in Australia with no additional taxes or charges?

    • +1

When you go to Amazon U.S. checkout, it will advise you of the additional charges such as taxes. Sometimes it is cheaper to order via Amazon AU then via the U.S. site for the same item.

  • SW2020, is this from lenovo edu store or amazon?
