  • Bought it the other day, with all options upgraded at $1,558.04. However ETA is more than 6 weeks plus 3-5 business days for delivery. :(

    • 6 weeks? Ouch. I need a laptop within the next two weeks so I guess this deal is out for me :(

      • I picked up an in stock Ideapad S540 13.3" for $1180 from the edu store this week, but there's no love around here for intel these days.

        • Good price, I'm willing to wait for the AMD. Hope it's worth it

        • +4

I believe that you are overpaying for a Intel i5 quad-core that has significantly less performance in multi-core workloads compared to an AMD Ryzen 5 or 7 CPU. Considering that I have been posting the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U (8 core/16 thread) based Lenovo S540 deal, now sold out, over the last couple of months.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/625167

I currently own the AMD Ryzen 7 4800U version of the S540. Migrating from an Intel 10th gen quad-core to an 8 core AMD Ryzen 7 4800u, the performance is night and day for me in relation to the workloads I need it for. Until Intel steps up their game, beyond biased marketing decks and CPUs with modified TDPs, I won't be promoting their products unless they are very competitively priced. To me quad cores now belong in the sub $800 category.

          https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-1135G7-vs-AMD-…

          • -4

@shellshocked: Your love for AMD is well established. 4C8T is more than adequate for my needs in this small form factor.

            • +7

@[Deactivated]: HaHa! Sorry but I don't love multi billion dollar corporations that want my hard earned money. I do love competition and innovation. If it wasn't for AMD stepping up their game from 2017 onward, we would have still been paying big $$$ for an Intel quad core CPU based computer compared to what we are paying now. Intel corporation needs to step up and innovate rather then rest on its laurels, like it has in the past, or rely MDF with the PC manufacturers.

              • -3

@shellshocked: Agreed that Intel are overpriced in the current marketplace and they're getting spanked by AMD for it. But they are the traditional market leaders and have greater brand loyalty and recognition so a price war isn't in their interests.

                • +6

@[Deactivated]: They have only been market leaders by stifling competition, which has landed up in court over the last two decades. Hence they were fined 1.5 billion by the European Commission.

                  https://www.crn.com/news/storage/220100320/european-commissi…

The quad core is more then enough message is what Intel had been spoon feeding us for years, prior to 2017, so that they could over charge us plebs for 6 and 8 core CPUs.

                  • -1

@shellshocked: Well, the European Commission loves handing out fines to dominant American corporations. Personally, I think an i5 4C8T is sufficient for 13" laptops that are invariably used for media consumption by the average consumer. They're not viable as productivity workhorses at that size.

          • -3

@shellshocked: A laptop is not really about heavy multicore task

Amd laptop don't have thunderbolt, a deal breaker for many

            • +4

@ln28909: Who says that laptops shouldn't be used for multi-core workloads? Unless you have a portable 8 core laptop in your hands, you wouldn't know what your missing. Can't do much about Thunderbolt 4, considering Intel charges fees and royalties to implement it, unless the manufacturers buy Intel CPUs. Thunderbolt 3 was only made more freely available due to lack of market penetration. I do wish they would implement Oculink, like what is in the Asus ROG Flow X13, so as not to have the bandwidth limitation of Thunderbolt. That external 3080 on the Flow X13 is amazing due to not being bandwidth starved if it was using Thunderbolt.

              • -6

@shellshocked: You're hoping for a special feature of a $5k laptop, on a laptop under $2k, no chance

Unless amd laptop can bring something similar to thunderbolt, they're not worth much

I had a 9750h laptop, never see max cpu usage or bottleneck by cpu, and it's only slightly more powerful than the 1135g7

                • +6

@ln28909: Well the ROG flow isn't a $5k laptop by itself. You can get it from JB Hifi for $2238 with the 5800HS 8 core AMD CPU.

                  https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/asus-rog-flow-x13-13-3-wu…

Your 9750h is a 45W TDP CPU. The 1135G7 required a TDP of 28W to perform. So I would expect your 9750h to be faster, because it draws more power. Unfortunately both those CPUs are outperformed, in a lot of work loads, by the 8 core Ryzen 7 5800u CPU with only at TDP of 15W.

                • +1

@ln28909: It's called USB 4, the only reason why the 5000 series doesn't have it is because the chipset is pretty much the same as the 4000 series. This happened once laptop makers realised how good and popular the 4000 series was they asked AMD to rush the 5000 series into design/production.

            • +2

@ln28909: You mentioned not about heavy multicore use and then throw in thunderbolt? How many non heavy users actually cares about thunderbolt? Thunderbolt peripherals are too expensive to be worth investing in unless you need egpu. Then you're most likely a heavy user.

              • @aarick: thunderbolt for dual QHD monitors display, for tasks such as excel and chrome, not core intensive at all

you buy thunderbolt dock for convenience, it's only a few hundreds anyway and they last forever

                • @ln28909: I think they are referring to the lack of market penetration of Thunderbolt. Your use case for Thunderbolt is unique, in that not everyone has a need for a dual QHD monitor setup or an eGPU.Though a dual QHD setup it's something I already do via USB-C. As you have already stated a Thunderbolt dock is "only a few hundreds". This has inhibited the uptake of Thunderbolt for the average, non tech savvy, consumer.

                  • @shellshocked: sorry to ask about your S540 here but do you have any recommendation of a USB-C to HDMI dongle that works at 4K@60Hz?

                    • +1

@skatoz: I bought a 4k@60hz dongle from Amazon. It was just a generic brand but works fine. I looked up the order but the product no longer seems active sorry, though there are other dangles which claim similar on Amazon.

    • Hows the delivery update? Mine's gone from 15 Nov to 30Nov and expected delivery 7 Dec gee

  • nice price, the mx450 is ok aswell for low level gaming

  • Apparently, I can manage Yoga Slim 7 Pro AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, 1TB, 16GB Ram with OLED delivered to Australia for approx $1900. Is it worthit ?

        https://www.bestdenki.com.sg/laptop/lenovo/yg-s7-pro-82n5001…

On a little research, BestDenki is a popular store in Singapore, Malaysia etc and AMD with OLED is limited to them. Have talked to FB page support and they confirmed if i mention DHL as recipent, they can handover to DHL and i can call up DHL Australia to manage pickup which won't be more than $100 i believe. Laptop price on bestdenki is 1799. 1 Singaporean $ = 1 Aud approx.

        • +gst

          • @cheapbloke: If the sales team facilitates on gst, its $1900 but thn Asus Rog Flow X13 is $2238 on Jb. Can someone compare both ?

            • +1

@ChipsChicky: Have you checked the battery life of either unit? Based on what I have seen the Yoga was made for productivity and have long battery life. The ROG flow 13 was developed as a small form factor gaming laptop, with the capability to connect to a very fast GPU. Realisrically the battery life is about 7 hrs on the ROG 13, based on 3rd party reviews.

  • Memory : 16GB Soldered DDR4-3200
Since there is no slot to add more RAM, how long would this be good for?

    • It purely depends on how you use your computer and what applications you use.

  • +1

Is there any benefit to having a Nvidia MX450 2GB over the integrated? Seems pretty weak

  • what is the comparable GPU in GTX/RTX range for MX450 ?

    • +1

There is no comparable GPU because the NVIDIA MX450 is treated as an entry level GPU. Due to the GDDR6 is will provide better performance in certain games vs the integrated graphics, because it's able to provide more bandwidth vs regular DDR4.

    • +2

At best, the mx450 is 5-10% slower than geforce 1050 base version

  • This one for portability or 16" one for the better graphics cards…decisions

    • For me it was portability, as I will be using it majority for work and carrying it in my backpack. Was about to purchase 16" but came down to size and weight.

  • any discounts on the 16" unit?

    thanks

  • No touch screen?

    • +2

      No touch screen sorry

    • These days touch screen seems to be reserved for 2-1 type machines.

  • What's the difference between:

    512GB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe
    512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe
    They are the same price

Also I presume the MX450 choice over Integrated graphics (+$69) is worth it?

    Thank you

    • What's the difference between:
      512GB SSD M.2 2242 PCIe NVMe
      512GB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe
      They are the same price

      Dimension of SSDs.

Also I presume the MX450 choice over Integrated graphics (+$69) is worth it?

Yes, if you want smooth game play on low graphic settings.

      • Thanks bongocat. Does dimension have an impact on anything? Out of curiosity why would they offer 2 sizes of SSDs?

        • Apparently performance can be better on the bigger drive.

        • Performance wise, no significant difference. Physical difference is in size to fit within space allocation/design.

      • +1

Read somewhere that bigger one (M.2 2280) has better heat dissipation.

  • So I just bought this laptop for $1079 a week ago from their ebay eofy sales and now tossing up whether I should cancel for this.

    As I see it

Main advantages of inspiron over ideapad:
    -TB4 vs type-c 3.1gen1
    -1kg vs 1.40 kg
-LPDDR4x 4267MHz vs DDR4-3200MHz (unsure if practically significant)
    -HDMI 2.0 vs 1.4

Main disadvantages of inspiron over ideapad:
    -1165G7 vs 5600u
    -1080p vs 2.2K screen
    -mx350 vs mx450
    -1 less usb-c port

Also I notice that the tdp for the ideapad is 15w, whilst the dell manual only refers to it's "processor wattage" at 28W - are these two specs equivalent and comparable, and if so are there any major gains of one over the other?

Happy to hear your thoughts on which one you'd favour and if there're any other practical considerations I've missed :)

    • +1

The battery on the Lenovo is bigger as well.

I'd say another deciding factor is if you want a 16X9 or 16X10 screen.

    • +2

      LPDDR4x 4267MHz vs DDR4-3200MHz

Doesn't really provide a significant advantage despite being low power. Especially if the battery capacity is smaller. Unfortunately I see it more as a marketing stunt in this circumstance, because people see 4267 Mhz vs 3200 Mhz and think that it's faster. LPDDR4X only has dual 16 bit channels(32 bit per DIMM). DDR4 3200 is 64 bit per DIMM.

HDMI 2.0 vs 1.4b, I'm not sure if what Lenovo has entered is correct because the 5600u's Radeon GPU and the Nvidia MX450 support HDMI 2.0.

For example I purchased an AMD based Lenovo laptop which they classified as only having HDMI 1.4b.I knew it's on board Radeon GPU supports HDMI 2.0, so I tested it with a UHD display and was able to achieve 60hz of the HDMI 2.0 standard vs the 30hz of the 1.4b standard without issue.

Unfortunately Intel marketing doesn't tell you the whole story regarding TDP. It is configurable between 15w and 28w for their 11th Gen CPUs. The biggest issue I have, based on 3rd party reviews, is that performance significantly diminishes when the TDP is at 15w. It needs to be at 28w+ to show any performance at the expense of battery life.

The AMD 5600u at 15w TDP is much more power efficient and faster vs the Intel CPU.

  • Worth the $200 upgrade to the better (~13%?) processor? Could extend this life slightly too?

    Processor AMD Ryzen™ 5 / 7 Processor

    AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600U (6C / 12T, 2.3 / 4.2GHz, 3MB L2 / 16MB L3)
    AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800U (8C / 16T, 1.9 / 4.4GHz, 4MB L2 / 16MB L3)

    • Seems a poor bang/buck upgrade even with future proofing in mind. I would only get it if I valued having the fastest available CPU for a model, as $200 isn't necessarily much money.

      • This was exactly my thought pattern haha. I did struggle with not getting the 16" for like 80 bucks more with better graphics/screen… Ah well. wanted the samll form factor, ended up paying the $200 more…

        • Haha well no time for buyer's remorse, it's a great laptop no matter which way you went. The single thread speed is better on the 5800u.

Personally I've bought nearly 10 business class laptops at 14", and it's a great size IMO. Having used a 5700U in the Asus PN51 mini-PC, I think you're in for a treat at the speed and power.

  • Anyone got the model code? I tried to search “ IdeaPad Slim 5 Pro” in the store but it keep giving me no result found. Thanks

    • Thanks @doweyy for the access code without an edu email. Bought 1z

  • Just purchased the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 2 - AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650U 16GB RAM 512GB SSD $864.50

It runs well but when opening files it takes a long time to load folders. I've migrated data from the old laptop to this one and it just can't cope.

I was thinking of returning it but not sure that's a legitimate reason or not. If I could this is a much better deal.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/631847

    • Do you mind if I ask what type, and the approximate size of the data you are migrating. I have a colleague with a similar spec laptop to yours. They transferred large amounts of financial data, and it never skipped a beat according to them. Have you benchmarked your NVME drive to see if there any issues?

      • @shellshocked not at all - it was roughly about 400GB in total. Basically all my photos, videos, documents, records etc from my old laptop. I first did it via an external SSD and then tried via the native Lenovo migrate application. It took roughly 20 hours or so. I've scanned the drive via windows and via the Lenovo app and both show no issues but it takes up to 20 minutes for folders or files to load. On my desktop for example, it will show the files but not the icons as it's still taking time to figure out the file type. it took about 25 minutes for this to resolve. It's unfortunate as otherwise it runs okay. I'm not interested in gaming that much, I run a few games here and there through GamePass, nothing fancy. It's mostly for work and family and I'd like it to last a few years. I'll see how I go with suppport, any other suggestions? Not sure what you mean by benchmark sorry..

  • Does anyone know how to get the passcode, as going through unidays link it asks for passcode

  • Is there any other good deals that don’t have a Delivery time expected of more then 6 weeks?

  • I'm very tempted to sell my ThinkPad L340 i5-8250U 16GB and upgrade, depends how hard it is to sell.

Edit: need to know which MX450 it is, they seem to have a couple versions that have a massive difference in performance.

  • Does this laptop have an ethernet port?

    • No, as indicated in the specifications above

  • Just confirming Cloud Grey is the lighter grey?

    • +1

Yes based on what the sales rep advised me.

      • Haha can anyone confirm? I was told the opposite on chat today…

Asked chat again, and was told storm grey is the darker colour. They couldn't provide a page that showed this…

  • Hey, any idea how to add the MX450 to the spec? Trying to customise it and there are no options other than the AMD integrated graphics.

    • Found out myself. You can't add the gpu without having 16gb ram. Probably due to it reserving 2gb, lenovo decided 6gb wasn't enough for reasonable performance in 2021 (fair decision).

  • Another option on Amazon is the

    • plus the 10% import tax?

  • When Lenovo says 8 weeks+ to ship, do they really take that long?? Also does anyone know when the 1DEA5 coupon expires?

    • I mainly depends on supply of components for that configuration you have chosen. Unfortunately COVID has thrown a spanner in the works.

    • +1

Can confirm delivery is late November to Early December. So I have cancelled my order

  • Anyone know of any alternatives with ethernet port in the same price range?

    • +1

You could just buy a USB to Ethernet port adapter
