81
PJULY17

For those in the market for a lawn mower. Cheapest I found was $239 (excluding delivery)

The Powerblade V450 boasts an effortlessly powerful 139cc air-cooled, 4-stroke OHV engine, that slices through the toughest buffalo with ease.

Packed with impressive features, the V450 boasts a tough steel deck and seven height settings with the pull of a lever, to keep your lawn healthy and looking its best. The traditional ‘quarter acre block’ is of course essentially just a dream these days, and the V450’s highly maneuverable 17” deck is a sensible choice for today’s modern yards.

Mowing is a leisurely stroll thanks to its oversized wheels and durable grass catcher.

Much though I try to convince my significant other differently, 17" is only 43cm.

Notwithstanding it's compelling pricetag or it's imperious looking engine, this is a very small mower from a brand I've never heard of and I'd personally not want to tackle anything close to a quarter acre block with it.

      It's for today's modern yards… 1/10 of an acre

      • Fair point. On re-reading their marketing, it does seem discretely targeting the minuscule modern-day block.

      • ..if you're lucky

    • The 17 inches is that from tip to tip on the blade. Or the chassis housing meaning that the blades will be shorter than 17 inches. Seems like a really tiny mower.

My old Briggs and Stratton mower just won't die. Kinda want a new one but it's still running perfectly fine. Changed the blades and air filter a couple of months ago while in lockdown and still going strong after probably 15 years.

Victa here still going after 20..

I used a 'modern' cheap mower once (single bar underneath). Was absolute rubbish and hacked the lawn more than cut it.

Grabbed 3 old mowers from Hard Rubbish that had been chucked, gave 2 to mates, kept one.

1- Rover brand 4 stroke. Air Filter was blocked completely. Never seen this before, and it didn't even look bad (but had oil stains, so micro dirt blocked it 100%). Removed, replaced. Runs like new, first pull start. Had new blades already as a bonus (but you can use the occasional SupercheapAuto club credit promos for new one's…free!!)

2 - Briggs and Straton 4 stroke and a Victa - No spark - Set the coil gap with a Gumleaf (5 min job) Spark is perfect again. But took a few pulls to get started with low fuel and surged a little, so put in one of these $2 diaphragm kits in each mower. Maybe 7 min job.

All now run like new. Use your

Can't see any reason to buy a new cheap crap mower.

@tunzafun001: Given that the lawn mower is a conceptually simple device - a motor turns a blade, your 'modern' mower problems could have been caused by a bad blade (SCA would help) or a not powerful enough motor. The both problems can be relevant to the old ones too.
What can be really different is the emission standards the modern mowers have to meet.

@Cupa Bundy Drinker: The issue is the modern cheap mower has a light weight single bar with 2 blades.

The old mowers have a full heavy disk with 2 - 4 blades.

When you are cutting thick lawn, the single bar

              a) doesn't have the mass to cut through consistently.
              b) doesn't have the ability to pass everything to the catcher. I don't usually use a catcher, but in spring where there may be a few weed seeds amongst the lawn, the old mower sucks them all up perfectly and the disk sends them back to the catcher. The single bar catches about 30% and disperses the seeds everywhere. Im about 4 years in to the recovery from using the weed seed spreading modern mower.

As for emission standards, I didn't really notice any difference between any of the carburettors of any of the mowers. But fair enough. Maybe a recirc line somewhere back into the air filter.

@tunzafun001: As in an actual gumleaf or is this a brand name for gap gauge? (Capital letter adds confusion).

            • @afoveht: I would say a actual gumleaf. A business card also works well gaping the coil and magnet

            • @afoveht: Haha, nah, just an actual gumleaf!! Poor mans toolbox! Old man had my gauges, so just improvised. Worked!

      • +3

The usual convention with mowers would be from tip to tip - ie. the cutting diameter.

      • +1

Most mowers that people have in their shed would be around 18” so a 17” one should be adequate for most.

      • from the specs at the bottom of the listing Cutting width 41cm which is a 16"

This is the same mob that sells "Michigan USA" branded machines that are actually made solely in China. False advertising.

And Baumr AG - Google the many damning reviews of their products. Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole produced by a vaguely German-sounding knock-off brand.

Do yourself a favour and spend a couple hundred more on a decent mower.

      • This particular one is POWERBLADE, has nothing about USA or Germany in it's name :)
My motivation to buy it was simple – I needed a lawn mower, preferably a battery one. I wanted to buy 36v for $350, but it was not available. Then I decided, if I buy an old tech, I don't wan't to spend a lot. Seriously, why to pay $500 for an outdated mower (even a quality one)?

This Chinese-made mower is sold under numerous brands, and the reviews aren't good.

Can recommend paying that bit more for a much better mower.

      • I thought the same, but if you compare pictures of this and, for example, Kogan's 17'' Certa, you'll see the difference. Btw, Powerblade used a Ducar engine, which is not the best, but well known Chinese brand with some history.

I got one a couple of months ago. I haven't had much experience with lawn mowers, but I'm quite impressed with this one - solidly built, cuts well (so far) and actually quieter than 36v Ozito. It was way more than I expected for $200. My yard is quite small thought.

Regarding to the brand.. I have a portable generator made by them, it sits on my boat and is used in a hostile environment - swell, temperature changes, high humidity (including regular contacts with salt water). And it runs surprisingly strong for a few years already.

Hope you have a CO detector on-board….

  • Ok for a cheapie mower, however the main thing are parts for them. The main being the blade. Can you get replacements in 2-3 years.

The motor itself is a bit ordinary however if looked after will probably give trouble free running for years (not in the same class as Briggs motors from 10 years ago).

From what I have seen, neglect normally stops these things running, especially with the design of this engine. Fuel sits in tue carb, goes stale etc.

  • +1

I brought one from this mob a few years back, needed a spare part, they were useless so be aware if this junk breaks down after your warranty expires

  • +1

Note from the specs at the bottom of the listing Cutting width 41cm which is a 16" cut so 17 inches is chassis not blade tips it also says 95+ RON so premium petrol

  • Engine size and HP are marginal

  • +2

anyone who doesn't know / never deal with this seller… a piece of advice… just walkway… better off pay a bit more get it from bunnings.

    • Please explain

      • +2

their products were made from cheap parts… bought a grass cutter from them… end up replacing it 3 times… within a warranty during 6 months period
actually the machine itself is ok but the parts like the fuel connecting from the tank was leaking, pulley starter complecation, trigger issue & handle loose… and many more… i can name it all day long after a consistent use for awhile as if I'm abusing the machine but I'm not…. it just the parts quality hence short life cycle.

I got nothing against them but If you would like to grab a bargain and know how and love to get your hand dirty hence willing to buy better parts and replace them… it still worth the saving… the parts ain't expansive
