[VIC] Free Vegetarian Meals for Anyone in Need @ Om Vegetarian Restaurant, Melbourne CBD

5310

Dear Ozbargainers,

I was inspired by the recent post from Nilgiri's restaurant in NSW (thank you from the entire community) and given the current circumstances transpiring in Melbourne, we will be providing free meals at our restaurant from 12pm to 4pm daily between Friday 16th July to Sunday 18th July to all those in need.

We can provide these meals in takeaway containers available for reheating later or served hot for immediate consumption.

Our restaurant details are:
Om Vegetarian
227 Collins St Melbourne (inside Wales Arcade)

The meals are simple home cooked Indian Vegetarian meals.

Please feel free to email us at [email protected] if you are part of a group/organisation which requires a lot of meals and can organise to pick up and distribute the meals to anyone in need.

Why don't you set up a go fund me register, or similar?

It's only fair when we return your favour.

    • +3

Fingers crossed they should be getting some government support for workers but still have rent, energy, ingredient, packaging etc costs to cover.

  • +4

Thank you so much for doing this!

I can't remember if it was this store specifically - but I used to get a lot of people in need asking me if they could finish off the food from a meal I already had. I would offer this many times too however one of the stores started to get really strict on this and even banned people who did this. I know it's to not encourage this behaviour, but still - food that would otherwise be thrown away! And really large signs warning of this.

It may have been us - we served buffet meals for $7.50 per person and in the rare occassion had people sharing meals and receiving refills. So we did put signs up asking people not to share meals but it was more so people didn't game our offer. If anyone was struggling I feel sorry that we did this. I hope anyone in need has access to our meals now.

      • +3

No, completely understandable and stuff like that is always tricky but appreciate the honesty and obviously what you guys are doing now. So thank you.

  • +2

    Kudos to you!

  • +3

Amazing, thanks for your generosity and supporting the community.

1000% will drop down post lockdown for a meal with the family. You guys deserve it.

    Thank you everyone

The one thing our team and restaurant knows how to do is to make lots of food and feed lots of people so that's how we feel we can contribute best at this time.

We have received a few requests from our generous Ozbargain community to set something up on GoFundMe or even accept donations for free meals. At this stage, Covid19's impact on the CBD has hit all CBD businesses including us particularly hard. So while the financial support isn't quite there our energy and optimism to make and provide meals to anyone in need is higher than ever.

If we ever get to the point of requiring a GoFundMe to support our free meal programs, I'll come back and post the link here. Hopefully it won't be needed.

P.s Your messages of support are amazing and motivate us to be better!

Still remember the Naans and Potato Sabji, in our worst days whenever we thought of a tummy full meal it had to be at OM on Collins St.

We still do visit very fondly, would love to be of any help to you guys.

Very nice gesture to support others in these crazy times.

  • +3

I'm a frequent visitor of OM restaurants in CBD and felt very sad seeing very less crowd this year.
Hence, I decided to have food at this restaurant whenever I visit CBD and visited them atleast 4-5 times in last 3-4 months.

Their food is really very tasty, cheap & unlimited. You can't ask any more. Kudos to you guys. God bless you!

  • +2

Reasonable normal price unlike the other place that selling butter chicken for $35 lol

  • +2

I have been eating at this restaurant since they first opened and can vouch that this one of the best quality cheap vegetarian restaurant food you will ever get.

Sam and his family have been fantastic and this gesture is just another sign of their generosity. Thank for you for doing this for the community, You guys are the rock stars.

I used to go there when I was a poor working holiday maker. Amazing food that I would nowadays gladly pay three times as much for. I wish there was a restaurant like that in Sydney.

  • +2

I have been to this place and food is amazing for the price you pay. Keep up the good work.

  • +2

    Hi everyone,

Just an update - we were able to distribute over 250 meals on Saturday to those in need. I even had a chat to a fellow OzBargainer who had arrived in store and purchased a meal to show her support for our cause. We will try to continue this initiative over the next few weeks.

Thank you for all your emails and messages of support.

    • We have even heard from a few organisations who will take food from us in bulk quantities.

If you know any groups or organisations that can use meals prepared and delivered in larger quantities, please email us on [email protected]

      • on my way in the porche to
        grab a free meal
