What is your EDC?

Everyday carry (EDC) or every-day carry is a collection of useful items that are consistently carried on person every day. The main reasons for having EDC are utility and preparedness; to help individuals overcome simple everyday problems, including possible emergency situations.

What is your everyday carry?

It's important to distinguish between EDC as in items you carry on you, and items that you carry within reach or for emergencies.
There's another term - VEDC which is vehicle EDC, as in what you carry in your vehicle, generally for emergencies as well.

My personal EDC is usually very minimalist - I use a rugged case with 2 card wallet on my phone, which has my credit card as well. + keys on a heroclip.

    In my VEDC I have:
    - Med kit , with vials of eye wash, extra bandaids
    - 2x 750ml bottles of water (I'll cycle them out over time so they dont get that plasticy taste)
    - A car-starter
    - A small box of odds n ends for personal emergencies - a spare leather belt, a razor, soap, shampoo, spare pair of black socks, spare pair of sport socks.
    - strong flashlight
    - sanitising wipes
    - sharpie
    - a small box for work with - USB-C 65W powerbank, earphones that I can use for calls, spare black tie,

At some point I'd like to build a bug-out bag or a small bag of survival items I'll put together based on a list of reddit.

    • This is a valid point. Usually I will only carry phone, wallet, keys actually on my person when leaving the house.

When including my work bag (only about once a week these days) I have a bunch of extra stuff that comes along like laptop, notebook + pen, USB, hand san, Panadol, power bank, Bluetooth headphones.

When including items in my car though, that list also includes things like LED torch, Leatherman, rope, towel, sunglasses, hat, overalls, first aid kit, emergency blanket, leather gloves, masks these days, USB charging cables, tissues, reusable shopping bags, water bottle, jumper leads, pen + paper, tape measure.

The other family car has most of this plus some extra child related things like spare clothes.

Then in fire season we often keep a few more things in the car in case of short notice evac (we live on the edge of a bushfire risk area).

My point being vehicles (even small ones like my Corolla) can greatly increase the capacity of your EDC, but there's no way I'd carry all that stuff every day in my pockets.

      • Med kit , with vials of eye wash, extra bandaids

I started doing that a few years ago.

Purchased a med-kit for my car, plus a first aid manual.

      • +1

Can you or anyone else recommend a good medical kit to buy, or where to buy

      • +1

This is the kit that I have in my VEDC - **not from this vendor (double the price )

        https://store.nationalfirstaid.com.au/shop/first-aid-kits-2/…

More importantly is doing a First Aid course so you know how to use the stuff in the kit.

Also I've got kids orientated stuff in there like cartoon bandaids / bandages and small toys to keep them calm (Advice from Paramedics..)

    • Up your game.

      Soft shell.
      Heavy duty jacket.
      Fire resistant clothes.
      Wide brim hat.
      PPE.
      Fast charger.
      2x 10L water.
      1st aid kit.
      10m rope.
      Multi bit screw driver.
      Tape measure.
      Bit set including security bits.
      Allen key sets.
      Scalpel set.
      Wreaking bar.
      Tomahawk.
      Folding saw.
      Toilet paper.
      Camp shovel.
      Wet wipes.
      Rechargeable 10W LED spot light.

Buuut, it's not a survival kit. I live regional. It's just cheap or old stuff I have needed while out and haven't needed at home.

      • +1

The fuel savings from not carrying all that gear mean I can afford to just buy one of those items every decade when the occasion comes up ;)

  • I work from home, so EDC is very minimal for me nowadays

    nowadays it is

    • Samsung smartphone. No wallet and no Driver License since the phone can do both.
    • Galaxy Gear S2 (only when I intend to be out for long periods of time)
    • house keys
    • some cheapo generic bluetooth earbuds that I got from Woolworths.
    • facemask

Back then it used to be keys, wallet, phone plus:

    • leather messenger bag + water bottle
    • small notepad and a 4-colour BIC pen
    • 5000mah Xiaomi powerbank, Pebble smartwatch
    • eye drops, Panadol and Red Bull in case I didn't get much sleep the night prior
    • flashlight for the bike ride back home. a cheap $15 CREE XM-L T6 rechargeable

How do you do driver license on a phone? Take the photo?

      • +4

Live in NSW. It's a digital driver licence. SA have one too I believe

        • +3

Of note though, while the digital licence is great.. it does not need to be accepted interstate, the NSW gov mentions this and recommends a physical licence to be carried.

          • +1

@Austaurean: Yep, definitely. I think we have it better than SA though as I hear that you can't use it for some government transactions. Here anyone from the cops to AusPost to the RSL will accept your digital licence.

Think ACT accept the digital driver licence but that's it

            • +2

@kerfuffle: Yep, its a really good idea and works very well. Hoping it wont take to long for it to become a recognised ID type Aus wide

              • +2

@Austaurean: When you have internet/the Service NSW app is working properly, that is …

                • @kerfuffle: I've never used the app. Is is that bad? Your physical ID doesn't require internet and you can attest to the authenticity of it using digital signatures.

Maybe nsw is that bad though.

                  • @deme: When they expect you to check in everywhere, but shopping centres still have patchy reception (looking at you Coles Fairfield West, Coles Liverpool and Coles Broadway), it's bad. When the app doesn't work and you can't check in (or worse, don't have your only copy of your licence you), it's bad.

Other than that, works great. They introduced a 28 day check in history which is handy … If you can check in, that is.

        • Does it still have an expiry date? And tiered pricing for renewal? (e.g. 5 years is cheaper than 1 year)
Because that makes even less sense for a digital license.

          • @howbazaar: Yes because you still get the physical licence sent to you; you don't get to opt out of it. The digital licence is optional.

      • Service NSW app (or other state authority if they do that)

What model is the power bank I've been looking for a lightweight one

  • +2
    • keys
    • wallet
    • tissues
    • hand sanitiser
    • face mask
    • Swiss Army Knife
    • wireless earphones
    • diary
    • iPad mini
    • phone
    • powerbank
    • water bottle
    • makeup pouch
    • sunglasses
    • foldable shopping bags

Think that's pretty much it these days; hard to remember as haven't needed to leave the house for almost 30 days now due to lockdown except to go essential shopping (where I wouldn't need half the things listed above)

  • +4

I’d be interested to know how much people use their EDC when they carry the most ridiculous of items.

  • +6

I've just checked my wallet, and there is $40 cash. I put that cash there in February 2019.

  • +8

    WTF is all this?
I get people working will carry work specific things but are people actually carrying all this on the weekends? Every time they leave the house they lug all this stuff around?

Keys and phone. That's all I need. When did people start requiring bag loads of things to deal with the modern era?

    • It all fits in a bum bag which is a very convenient item and no hassle to carry all day, every day.

      • DJ wore it at a time when it was cool. Nowadays the only people I see sporting them are eshays hanging out at the local train station

        • +1

How do you know pegaxs is not an esh lad?

    • +2

Same. Mobile and keys. One to be in contact with people, and one to get in and out of the house/car.

The mask and DL I leave in the car, because they are not essential unless I have a specific need for them.

Didn't realize so many are wanabe preppers or Macgyvers.

phone. that is it… i don't even carry a wallet nowdays not even keys

    • amen!

  • EDC:
    * Mask
    * Gloves, now that it's getting chilly
    * Lockpicking kit
    * 50 L backpack

    Some days I also carry:
    * Clothes hanger
    * Painkillers

    • What's your reason for carrying a lock picking kit as there are only a few reasons you can without it being an offence in NSW.

If your state doesn't do let me know.

      • +1

I think they were joking but I do carry a few jigglers and some simple picks as I got sick of clients not knowing where the keys to the data cabinet are and most just have wafer locks that can easily be opened in seconds.

  • Tampons, Condoms + a cigarette lighter.

    • +7

I assume you smoke the tampon because the condom would be a bit plasticy.

      • +1

No. If you get lost in the wilderness, you can start a fire by lighting the tampons, then adding extra tinder etc.
With the condom, you can use it to carry @ a litre of water.
        ;)

        • +4

          Tinder.. condom… something something….

    I carry
A dango a10 bifold wallet (seriously a great thought out small wallet)
Inside said wallet cash / some emergency supplies / memory stick (work)
Keyport pivot with locking scbiners for my car keys
Galaxy buds+ in a UAG case that can be clipped onto either wallet or keys with the sbiners. A bit chunky but I hate holding my phone to my ear and sometimes take very long calls for work.
    Phone obviously
Couple masks incase i break one.

    • dango a10 bifold

      How's Dango's RFID blocking?

I found that my metal Trayvax wallets don't block RFID at all, and I can use my work access card without taking it out, which I honestly prefer.

      • +1

Honestly I'm not sure, I got it right when Melbourne's lockdown hit so I've made a purchase a grand total of once and used google pay.

I'm the same, I wish they didn't have any RFID blocking capability.

    • I'm gonna copy you and get one of those wallets and key things

      • I think they have a newer design on the keyport that looks a little nicer. I have the original design.

I had a keysmart before and this is way better when it comes to adding / removing items from. Everytime I added something to the keysmart I was a very frustrated lol

        • Thanks for the info. Did you buy your keyport online from their website in the US, or did you manage to buy it in Oz?

          • @[Deactivated]: Bought it off amazon - came from overseas. I think US

  • +2

Apart from the usual wallet, keys, mobile, this is what I carried before my bag got pinched:
    - silicone collapsible container (for leftovers)
    - cutlery set
    - nail cutter (I frickin hate hang nails)
    - hand sanitiser
    - dental floss (I hate having food stuck in my teeth)
    - pen
    - notepad

I also had a re-usable cup (550ml mason jar) but I'd take it out/put it in if I had a good idea that I would/wouldn't be using it.

Went on a successful pocket diet around 5 years ago:

    • Phone
    • Wallet - had a Crabby V2 for years, switched to a Trayvax Armored Summit recently
    • House keys - attached with a paracord weave to the wallet, this is slimmer than a split ring
    • Car key (if driving) - attached with a small carabiner to the rest of the keys

My european carry-all laptop bag has a few extras, I don't carry it everywhere I go though:

    • Ikea tape measure - surprised it's not more popular with EDC crowd, they are free, take up almost no space, and come in handy
    • Headphones (corded and cordless)
    • Victorinox Cybertool (DIY knifeless 😢)
    • A bit of gaffer's tape wrapped around a plastic card
    • Pens, sharpie, notepad
    • Spare masks, hand sanitiser, tissues, mints
    • Allergy meds, panadol, bandaids
    • Dongles and cables
    • Usually a 3DS, if I know I'll be on public transport
    • Shopping bags
    • Umbrella
  • +1

    Keys, wallet and phone.

    • +2

This. If you're carrying more than this you're doing it wrong.

    • In winter I add a Chapstick. But yes, that's all you need. I only bring a wallet if I need to show a certain card.
Hope we get a digital licence here in Qld soon.

The second amendment: 1910 – State Debts – amended section 105 to extend the power of the Commonwealth to take over pre-existing State debts, to debts incurred by a State at any time.

Sorry buddy, but we live in Australia.

  • 2 snake-bite bandages and clips — in every vehicle and backpack.

  • Phone. Keys. Blutooth earphones. Glasses cloth. Glasses. Breath mints.

I used to carry a multitool but only used it once every few months so now I leave it in the bag.

Bag has: multi tool, power bank + 2 cables, panadol, neurofen. Wet wipes. Spare glasses cloth. Sunnies. couple of pens. hair brush. wallet.

Generally bag lives in the car.

  • Cellular smart watch.

The main reasons for having EDC are…

…talking to other people about your EDC; asking other people what their EDC is so you have an excuse to talk about your EDC, even if they give you a blank stare; and fantasising about the end of the world when your tactical biro / headlamp combo will see you suddenly drowning in "females"

  • Water purification tablets
    Multiple LED torches.
    Multi tool
    Freeze dried food rations
    Zombie tracker
    Foldable sword
Low volume high warmth sleeping bag
Bag of mud to avoid heat-seeking detection drones
An indestructible log in the event of a nuclear explosion.

  • I hate having things in my pockets so I carry my phone and a mask. Have not taken my wallet out of the house since the pandemic started, well if I'm driving I do. In the car I have a First Aid Kit, Jumper Cables and a Jump pack plus picnic rug and camp chairs. Bottle opener because it's a MK5 Golf and they come included.
