Catan the original strategy board game. Your adventurous settlers seek to tame the remote but rich isle of Catan.       40mins-1.5hrs. There is an expansion to make it a 5-6 player game that is well worth it… If you have friends. There are also a lot of other expansions/extensions that change the gameplay a bit.

        I just played a round of Pandemic for the first ime and it went down really well so considering this, but the bit I read about it was that games are long. I don't consider 1.5 hrs too long so thx for the heads up. I would have 5 to 6 play from time to time but someone said the expansion is another 35, wasnt keen to drop 80 bucks on it

          Yeah 1.5hrs would be considered a long game and I would say average is about an hour. I get where you are coming from. When I got it, it was still $80 just for the base everywhere and got it on sale for $48 and honestly it's my favourite game. As mush as it sucks to fork out another $35 for the 5-6 it is worth it just to even have the bigger map. I still prefer to make a 5-6 player map even when playing with 3-4 people as it makes for a quicker game with more resources.

          Catan is a classic, but I think there are much better games out there for people starting out with board games today.

          Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, The Quest for El Dorado, 7 Wonders, Kingdomino, Splendor, or Century Spice Road are all great options IMO.

          having said that, if you like the look of Catan, just go for it. If any of the themes of the other games appeal to you more, try one of those instead. You can check them out on boardgamegeek.com, its like the imdb for board games.

            Catan is a classic, and I used to love it, but in comparison to modern games, it sucks.

            My current fave is Dice Forge, which is simple-ish, point based like Catan, and has some seriously dun interactions with making your own dice.

      Dirt cheap on Ebay usually means it's a knockoff copy.

      Same as those stalls in the middle of shopping centers.

      Never buy off ebay unless they are a trusted seller. Too many knock off's of this game. Saw one last weekend in a cheap store for $50 and the packaging looks similar but cheap ink.

      Yeah the Amazon stocked ones usually aren't, it's the same listing fake sellers use for it normally. Was $28 last night (fake item listing clearly); using the same listing as the legit copies though. It's one catalog listing for it.

      If you buy direct through Amazon you will have no trouble. Even if you bought a fake one through a seller on Amazon their returns are pretty good.

    I've been playing this for a few years and it's good fun, however, I'm bored with it now. Can anyone vouch for the expansions adding some more strategy elements to the game?

    I basically find that the starting positions have a massive impact on how the game develops, with one player usually collecting far more resources and just smashing development cards until they win.

      You've basically outlined Catan in a nutshell and the reason I prefer other games.

      The expansions do change the meta quite a bit, but the other option would be to move in from Catan to something a bit more complicated. On the other hand the Catan expansions are quite good if a little expensive. Also it's very stingy that the 5-6 player expansion pack only allows for 5-6 players in the base game.

      If going down the catan route, seafarers is good if you like the core catan experience. Essentially it gives more space to expand if you can reach other islands. This addresses a lot of issues (getting boxed in, allowed a ln alternative to dev card spam, does nothing to address the "rich get richer" aspect of catan).

      Cities and Knights adds a whole more mechanics and adds a lot of complexity, but I didn't like it. It feels like a disproportionately complicated expansion that's shoved on top of a simple game. You may feel differently, but I would suggest changing game and only getting it if you were super keen to make the game more complex.

      Interestingly enough, the 5-6 player game also changes things up. Firstly it reduces the dev card victory cards which nerfs a dev card strategy. It also provides a disproportionately increased room to build. Unfortunately it increases the game time a lot to the extent I'd probably suggest only getting it if you have 5-6 players and are super keen on playing catan and only catan.

        To copy and paste from myself above, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, The Quest for El Dorado, 7 Wonders, Kingdomino, Splendor, or Century Spice Road are all great options for newer players. Calico as well now that I think about it.

        Agricola, The Castles of Burgundy, Hansa Teutonica, Bus, Root, Brass Birmingham, and Spirit Island are great medium-heavy games if you're after something a bit longer and more challenging. While they're ultimately probably not as complicated as games like Civilization or StarCraft, they can be quite challenging to learn if you're not already familiar with some of the concepts they build on top of seeing as you don't have a computer to take care of all the rules for you. Not insurmountable by any means if you're keen enough, but just be wary of it.

        Depends on how many players you have? Quacks of Quedlinburg is great, 7 wonders, roll for the galaxy, sushi go party are all games where players take turns simultaneously which is a great way to keep it interesting.

            @drycleanonly: Honestly settlers isn't the greatest with 2 players anyway. Most of the game is in the trading, by essentially taking that out you're removing all ability to stop a runaway leader.

            I'd suggest patchwork and 7 wonders duel for 2 player games (both are dedicated 2 player games). Both have a similar level of complexity to settlers but have far more depth and skill required compared to catan.

            Each one is worth the $30-60 paid.

            Just purchased Horrified ($40) and Villainous ($60) Sushi GO ($14) and The Crew ($17) from Amazon US, waiting on arrival.

        Space Base. Same "roll the dice and get dopamine rush" mechanism, but far more elegantly done and streamlined.

        Game has a generic sounding name, it's ugly, and the theme is dull, and yet everybody I introduce it to loves it. I have several dozen games and it's one that somebody wants to play every few sessions and nobody ever refuses or dislikes it. Simple enough that my 5 year old can play it but has a decent amount of depth.
