Need Prescription Lenses Advice

Hi,

Need some advice from someone out there on prescription lenses, I have a pair of glasses which I've been wearing for a few years am happy with. However the coating on the lens is smudging off, hence I will be looking to replace the lens.

Going to Specsavers or OPSM, just replacing the lens if I wanted UV coding as well would cost me north of $300. That's like getting a new pair of glasses, can anyone recommend a cheaper option or shop (Melbourne) which does a good price for quality lenses.

Cheers

  • Have you got private health? Last time I got 2 pairs of Hugo Boss glasses (one sunglasses, other normal), and I paid no out of pocket from Specsavers

Do you need some sort of special lens?

    • Yeah, only covers $150

I bought my last pair of glasses from Clearly - can still claim via PHI

Zenni is even cheaper but then you won't be able to claim.

    • +1 another vote for Zenni

  • Anthony Smith optometrist in Moonee Ponds put new prescription lenses in my frames for $90 - a while back.

I think they have a branch in the eastern suburbs too.

How? You can get two pairs of glasses including the frame for like $150 at Specsavers.

    • That’s the quote I got, I don’t know how they do it. I know what you mean as I bought 2 pairs for $199 at Specsavers before.

  • I got a pair of lenses only from Costco for $100 with anti-reflective coating and blue light filter coating. But quality isn't great. A bit over a year later and the coating started flaking off.

In my experience, most place won't do lenses for frames they don't sell.

  • AliExpress $20! Surprisingly good quality. They got the first pair right. So ordered 3 more pair identical in anticipation of them breaking. Still on my first pair years later.
