Which Luxury SUV Will You Buy. Reliable, Comfy, Value, Performance

Hi,
I am looking for a new luxury SUV under $120k. Fairly disappointed with Land Rover Defender test drive. Other cars on my list are Lexus RX, Land Rover Evoque and Mercedes.
I need something with good reliability, comfort, safety and performance. Doesn't need to be a 4WD or for towing. 5 seater is enough. I already have a Prado Kakadu for 4WD and towing, etc.
Thank you in advance!

    • Nah. It’s not a city SUV. It’s a huge off road 4wd I fancy clothes.

    Suggested F150 Lightning Platinum

F150 Lightning Platinum - if it's cheap enough and coming to Australia ;-)
Yeah, not an SUV but I want one so… :-P

  • Specced up Tourag = Q7/Porsche at a fraction of the price.

    • That's what VW drivers like to think.

Whilst Audi crow thinks they are one cut above.

Comes the Porsche elite, until noting some parts with VW logo under the bonnet.

  • Get a Lexus version of the Prado.

Same reliability/car… just more sound deadening and very comfy seats.

    • Doesn’t need 4wd.

    • That car doesn't exist in Australia.

      • May not be a Prado, but it is based on a Landcruiser 200 series, so close enough.

        • -1

Completely different car, isn't in production anymore and way above the OP's price range.

          • -2

@[Deactivated]: Not sure where you're getting you info from looks like they're still in production to me?
            https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2021-lexus-lx-lx450…

Can still get a secondhand LX within the price range

Not sure why you're sh1tting on someone's suggestion.

            • +2

@Drakesy: I get my info from Toyota, the source. The stopped Landcruiser 200 production months ago. It has been replaced by the 300. These LX are made on the same line. Anyway, you suggestion is silly because it's way out of the OP's price range, it's an ancient car, and most importantly, the OP said he already has a Prado and doesn't want an off-road or towing car because he wants a car for his wife.

              • @[Deactivated]: I didn't suggest it though?

                • @Drakesy: You suggested a LX450 which is a completely different and inappropriate car.

                  • @[Deactivated]: I didn't suggest it.
I just gave it a name @googleyahoo69 suggested it ;)

                    • @Drakesy: No he suggested a Prado based GX Lexus which is available overseas. You suggested an LX. This is not that hard.

                      • -1

@[Deactivated]: Well. I did mean the LX. :)

                        1. It is reliable - one of OP's criteria.
                        2. Those seats… so comfy…

    Suggested Porsche Macan S

Wait for 2022 model of Porsche Macan S - its got the engine out of the former / current GTS - see:
    https://www.caradvice.com.au/967698/2022-porsche-macan-price…

    • This man here is about the only one here with impeccable tastes.

The Macan is probably the best handling performance SUV made outside of a Urus or ridiculous exotica. Anything else is just pretending.

Any V6 Macan would be the tits. Fours are shit.

I would personally love a diesel Macan but they're not imported any more AFAIK.

I truly dont think they look all the good but realistically there's none better, not even a Cayenne which is too big.

  • Depends if your leasing or planning to keep it long term. Some new cars will just be a headache to own out of warrenty and be heavy on depreciation.

Strong resale brands with good reliability like Lexus and Porsche would get my first preference. Anything with Lexus 3.5L engine will be a good longterm companion and is a very safe choice. The Porsche will be expensive and base models might not have much, but they make great cars and the brand is more desirable then ever. I love my 2010 Cayman.

If you want to be brave and get some cool points. Get the Alfa Romeo Stelvio QV. Otherwise I think I would look at the Genesis (5yr warrenty/10 year powertrain).

    Suggested Kodiaq RS

Kodiaq RS. A little left field, and you'll be well under budget.

Enough comfort and tech to keep you happy, good sound, decent performance. 5 yr warranty and you can negotiate to get your servicing wrapped into the cost.

  • IMHO it doesn't seem like you know what you exactly need/want.
Make a list of 'must have', 'should have' and 'not necessary' (yours & your wife's), then filter down the cars based on your criteria and budget.
Then test drive these cars and determine if they meet your expectations.
(Note that the list should contain subjective ('feel of prestige', 'estimated availability' etc) and objective criteria (engine size >= 2L, DSG gearbox etc))

  • lol @ suggestions by posters

there's a reason why bmw, lexus, mercedes are the best selling luxury SUVs globally.

  • Why no Audi? Better than a crappy Lexus.

    • -1

      Worse quality?

      • VAG lack of reliability.

A Lexus would actually last the distance.

Of course ignore if you're doing a 3-5yr lease.

  • -3

Could you stretch to a Mercedes EQC? Easily the best SUV in Australia - I'm gobsmacked noone has mentioned it.

    • +1

      I'd seriously debate that
When wheels gave it the car of the year there was an outcry. Had to of been some money under the table.

To this day i've only ever seen one on the road
And that was a dealer's car.

Speaks volumes as to how corrupt the decision was

    • +1

Obviously not the best SUV in Australia. Not even the best Mercedes. Not even the best GLC. Not even close to the best EV. Slow, small, slow charging, expensive and with shitty range. Just junk. A stop gap until Mercedes actually starts cranking out EVs with dedicated platforms.

  • Lexus RX 570

    • -1

why not the Lexus RX 6900 XT?

    • -3

Comment on a car post without knowing the name of the car you recommend. Standard Ozbargain.

    • LX570 is great, except Lexus/Toyota are a bit behind when it comes to technology and infotainment.

Still no android auto / carplay from memory.

    • -1

The Lexus RX 570 is hard to get because people use them for mining.

  • Suggested Hyundai Ioniq 5

I want an electric car next :)

80K is plenty lux for me :(

    • You ain't in luxury territory until you pay the luxury car tax.

      • Oh. Forgot about that. OP can’t you stretch your budget to $150k? Gov needs more money for vaccines.

      • Financial year

        2021–22

        $79,659

        Yes!!! Just got in

        • You could buy a non EV / Hybrid and start paying at a lower threshold. Plus you really need to pay a bit more than $80k because for a few hundred bucks it might not buy us (the long suffering tax payers) much LOL

  • +1

Lexus Or Porsche if you want something that you plan on keeping past warranty period. I know you have a prado but with 120k I’d put it on a 300 series (assuming you don’t need it in a hurry)

  • No poll option for the RX even though that's what OP is considering?

    • you can "suggest" it - separate box where you post new comments

  • +1

i would say model y performance. but its not out in aus yet

  • Can't believe no one has said to buy the highest yielding car yet!!!

    • That joke has been done to death. I for one am glad to see most folks have moved on. :D

      • Nah it has just changed into Elon says once he gets FSD working the $10k you paid for FSD (on top of the $60k you paid for the car) would be a good investment because he can turn the car into a robo taxi but it won't be able to clean itself so you'll have to get out the BBO after it's been baked in for a few hours after whoever last rode in it.

  • Suggested Lexus RX

I've always found the front of Lexus sexy

    • Can also get sexy in the back.

  • +2

I am looking for a new luxury SUV under $120k.

Why anyone would buy a luxury SUV is beyond me - if you're going to spend $120K at least get a real car, not a hatchback on stilts. Who are you trying to impress? The Karens at the local soccer club on Saturday morning?

Fairly disappointed with Land Rover Defender test drive.

It's a Land Rover, are you surprised?

Other cars on my list are Lexus RX, Land Rover Evoque and Mercedes.

If you must, the Lexus RX is a good choice. BMW X5 is probably my go to in this price range.

    • Of course they are trying to impress the karens at the local soccer club!

  • Volvo XC40- Recharge

  • Skoda Kodiaq RS

  • -3

This thread seems out of place on a "Bargain" forum. None of the options suggested represent a bargain (or value) in any traditional sense of the word.

    • Camry is the bargain of the lot. But then it is only 1/3 of the price OP wants to spend. Why spend less when you can spend more. Hold on that doesn't make sense. That is why you add in value and performance. You know people who tell you 9s to 0-100 isn't worth spending $30k on a Corolla but spending $60k on a Tesla to do 5s from 0-100 is good value.

  • Suggested Toyota Alpha

Toyota Alpha, if you have someone seat on rear.If you can get it from overseas. I saw some Asian people driving that in SA.

    • +1

120-140k. Some lexus dealer brings it in.

  • Suggested Audi Q7

I'd at least drive a Q7. I've had a Q5 for coming up 10 years this year and no issues apart from expensive servicing (which is to be expected).

Otherwise, Model Y is just around the corner, and new Model X around a couple corners!

  • Close friend's uncle has the Genesis GV80, which I find to be absolutely breathtaking. Worth having a look at, although they are very hard to come by in the country.

  • +2

Model X isn't $120k new. You might wait for the Y if that is your kind of thing.

Get a Lexus SUV if you want reliability, comfort. Not sure if you would ever get an SUV for performance unless it is one of those performance sedans (usually made by Porsche) they jacked up to pretend it is an SUV.

    Enjoy spending your money.

  • Upgrade the Prado to the Sahara.

  • +1

The ozbrag post is obvious. Look at me, im talking about buying an expensive car…

And ill post the same thing several months later, seeking confirmation again!

Yay but i can only afford to live in the west.

  • Suggested Haval H9

    Cant beat this!

  • +1
    Suggested Toyota Tarago

    Tarago is not bad

  • I think the x7 is the way to go honestly. Just get an entry x7 and it's at 120k

  • Porsche Macan!!!
