  • Great kit, getting a bit long in the tooth though…

    • +1

Mines working well as a duplicacy backup target and cctv box for one camera

    • +2

Isn't the 220 the latest generation, with the 218 being the predecessor?

      • +1

        the 218 being the predecessor

Edit: Sorry misread, you're right 218's the earlier model

      • +1

Yup. Fairly sure the last two digits is the model year.

  • Any NAS with more bays on sale somewhere?

    • I'm waiting for a ds420+ or ds920+ to go on sale. I never see them anywhere.

      • The DS920+ pops up here semi-frequently, I'd recommend setting a search alert for it. The mid-range models pretty much never do :(

        • last deal I saw was for about $693 delivered. hoping to find something like that.

    • Doesn’t seem like any other deals at present

  • I had one of these briefly and it struggled to run the Synology software to a degree that made it unusable

    • +3

What were you trying to run? Mines doing basic file serving, as well as Hyperbackup and above mentioned Synology Surveillance Station and duplicacy target without issue.

I'm not running plex or any kind of transcoding application as the processor is definitely not suited to heavy CPU tasks (hence the cheap price)

    • Will this struggle to run DSM 7?

      • +3

DSM7 being modular, really depends what you want to do with it. If you want to get it to crunch facial recognition on your photos, Somebody Gonna Get Hurt Real Bad.

I can't give you personal experience as I've left mine on 6.x for the time being as everything's running well and it's currently at a remote site, so given the current Covid-related lockdowns, the less interruptions, the better.

But if you're just doing file storage, then ymmv.

Work out what you want to use the NAS for then match specs up accordingly.

      • My 218 runs 7 fine.

  • Will this work well with docker and home assistant?

    • Doesn't support Synology's docker package

      • So no sonarr and sabnzbd support then i guess?

        • I'm not sure how proficient you are with linux, however you don't necessarily need docker for *arr and/or sabnzbd - I've got them running on bare metal.

For Synology, looks like there are community-supported repo's (eg: Sonarr - https://github.com/SynoCommunity/spksrc/pull/3803) that will enable you to install Sonarr without docker, at least for now.

That being said, I wouldn't want to do a huge par2 repair on this CPU :)

  • I'm bit confused.. is this 512mb or 2gb..

  • -8

    is this a washing machine?

    • Try fridge or cupboard maybe…

  • +2

Do yourself a favour get something with more RAM and processor power

  • I have an old HP n54l. WOuld this be better than that?

  • now shows $235
