Google Confirms Pixel 6 & Pixel 6 Pro

Overnight in a series of tweets Google confirmed the upcoming Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro devices along with some key information.

  • 2 Devices Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
  • 3 colour combos for the Pixel 6 Pro and 3 for the Pixel 6.
  • Pixel 6 Pro has 3 cameras including telephoto with 4x zoom. Pixel 6 has the same cameras however no telephoto.
  • Both are powered by Googles first ever smartphone SOC which is named Google Tensor. It can process Googles most powerful AI and ML models directly on the device. Google claims big leaps in voice commands, translation, captioning and dictation.

Coming this spring

I'm not sure how many other Pixel fans are waiting to upgrade to this device however I found this mornings information to be quite promising. Hopefully the devices delivers.

Comments

  • They failed to color match the above camera part to the below camera part on all colors it seems, there slightly different colors on the pro, no bloody idea what there thinking with the non pro.

    • +1

My favourite is probably the peach and orange colour on the 6. I'm after the Pro though so I'll have to settle for black.

    • Looks like the gloss/matte combo they have used previously.

  • Dislike the bump, but will update my falling apart Pixel 4 to the normal 6, unless the Pro offers something more apart from more screen estate

    • +1

Yeah I'm bit indifferent to it. I figure I use a Spigen Tough Armor case anyway so I'm sure it will hide it.

From the information I've read so far in terms of differences between the pro and non pro model it's just a bigger screen, 120hz vs (90hz on non-pro), battery, telephoto lens, 12gb ram (8 on non-pro).

      • +1

My go-to case is the Ultra Hybrid myself.

Hmm don't really need or use all that stuff, so will most likely stick to the non-pro model. Thanks!

    • Why is it falling apart? (From drops?)

      • From the wireless charger and heat. Back panel is half off the frame. NFC is shot unless I press it to the machine, but surprisingly the camera is still fine even though there's now a decent gap between the lens and the rest of the phone.

        • The phone gets hot when you use wireless charging? And it's melting the glue from the back panel?

          • @dust: Yep.

Hoping third Pixel is issue-free (Pixel 2 just randomly had the screen die)

        • +1

Sounds like time to get it replaced or refunded under warranty.

We just got a full refund for my 4XL last week because of a shoddy battery.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah, except this is my main driver and I have an eSIM (no physical SIM), so kinda up the creek without a paddle.

It's been three months; sure it can hold on just a bit longer …

            • @kerfuffle: Yeah I get that.

But imagine the Pixel 6 being just around the corner, and getting the original full purchase price back from Google!

              It's free money!

              • @[Deactivated]: Would they even give my money back though considering I bought it from Harvey Norman?

                • +1

@kerfuffle: Yes. I purchased mine from JB HiFi.

They will send you paperwork, you print it all out, call Toll and they will come and pick it up.

                  • @[Deactivated]: Interesting. I'll keep it in mind when I get my 6. Thanks!

                    • @kerfuffle: I charge my Pixel 4xl daily on a genuine wireless charger. Have been doing it for 18 months and not an issue with the back falling off or it getting hot. I suspect something is very wrong with either the charger or the phone. Possibly a fire hazard waiting to happen. I'd do something about that asap

                      • +1

@jhaley3180: The wireless charger I used is the Google Pixel Stand …

You must be one of the lucky ones. Google 'Pixel 4XL back cover peeling off'

                      • @jhaley3180: Yeah this -^. I have the official Pixel charger myself (made for the 3 originally?).

Flawless - sure a little bit warmer than when not charging, but no more than charging by cable.

I really do suspect a dodgy wireless charger here. I'd be pretty damn worried.

        • No idea why people bother with wireless charging.. slow af and phone heats up too much
I like using the PD fast charger/s that come with it. Done in no time.
Also use a magnetic holder in the car so the magnet thing blocks wireless charging.

          • @G-rig: So people at work stop stealing my cable to charge their phones. Can't steal if there's no cable lying around (yes I'm aware that the Pixel Stand cable can be used to charge the phone without the Stand, but they don't know that …)

Let's hope the 5 is on sale soon

    • The 4a 5g has been on sale recently and is a good/cheap alternative!

      • -1

        No waterproofing.

  • Keen to switch over from my OnePlus 7T.

  • Pixel 3XL owner here - looks like a decent upgrade.

  • Looking forward to the pixel watch as well.

    • I'm excited for that too however once again the rumours on it have gone quiet.

The upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 running Wear OS looks good!

  • +3

i wish they would release a smaller form factor one.
everybody likes big screens except for me apparently.

    • Nope, I'm in the same camp. Have a pixel 5 at the moment, which despite the 6 inch screen, is actually a reasonable size.

    • Nope I wanted smaller….

  • Verge quoting that “it will certainly be a premium-priced product” so no Nexus style value here

  • +1

    need pixel 6 mini

  • +1

Pixel 2xl owner here. Had the Samsung galaxy nexus, nexus 5, nexus 6p.

Been hoping to upgrade since p4 but kept the p2xl due to various issues/disappointments with p4 and p5.

Can't wait to finally upgrade to the p6pro!

    • new untested in real market SoC… what could go wrong.

    • Yeah I would have been happy keeping the 3xl although the battery life wasn't great. The pixel 5 is awesome in that regard, and don't mind the smaller form factor for pocketability and one handed operation!

I think I'll pass on this. It looks really ugly.

  • Hopefully they will have improved the speaker, loudspeaker and microphone quality from the pixel 5, pretty annoying half the time when it can't hear you in the car and whatnot. Perhaps it's the assistant software, seems to get more unreliable as the days go on. Hey Google, read my messages. Turns of the living room TV.. smfh.

More things under the screen probably aren't good in terms of the fingerprint reader. Not sure on the camera bar either not very flush, but who knows it could be a good phone.

    • +1

I agree with you about the assistant. I feel like it worked great when I bought my Pixel 2 XL and now on my 4 it's worse than ever.

    • The speakers on the 5 and 4a5g are what stopped me from upgrading from the 2xl, can't believe Google still cut such corners.

  • Wonder if the camera bump will be able to fit into the Razer Kishi. xCloud streaming is coming later in the year, and would love a slightly larger phone than my Pixel 4 for it. Might be better to just buy an old Pixel 2 XL though.

  • +3

Smarter way to do a large camera bump if you ask me. Putting across the whole width means it won't rock on a table.
