    waiting for xm4

    • +2

same, regretting not buying it when it was available on JB and harvey norman sites during the first batch, now sony has temporarily halted production due to covid and I cant find them anywhere. Saw BingLee listed them on their website as "In Stock" today but there was no add to cart button, contacted live chat and apparently it was a website error.

edit: found XM4s in stock at Good Guys so decided to buy them

      • grat, are they worth the $ and wait?

        • +2

I spend $300+ on a pair of over ear anc headphones because they're life changers on a long haul flight. These in-ears I just can't justify spending at much (as is the price for the XM4). From specs at least, it seems the 4 is just a generational upgrade over the 3. Anc a bit better, fit a bit better (can replace it the tips on the 3 too I guess!) and other rough changes.

In terms of bang for buck the 3 would definitely be better. But I'm not sure if the 4 is worth it if you have the cash. Could be.

          • +4

@incipient: I got my WF-1000XM4's delivered yesterday. Managed to price match good guys ebay store for $330 with Sony and paid using AMEX 2 months ago with $60 cashback. Couldn't justify paying over $300.

I have WF-1000XM3, WH-1000XM3 and Jabra Elite 85T's. The WF-1000XM4 is definitely worth the upgrade.

Noise Cancellation and sound quality are top notch. Definitely an upgrade.

Haven't fully pushed the battery life as I am spending most of my time at home in lockdown. But wore them on couple of walks, and the NC was insane. Fit is much better than WF-1000XM3.

Personally reckon it's very close to my over ear WH-1000XM3's.

            • @aspirepranesh: Wow, that's a good price. I got mine 2 days ago too from Sony. I also used my AMEX $60 cashback offer but didn't even think about a price match with the good guy as it was $330 plus delivery.

              • @slimdevil: I thought I will try my luck with Sony and they matched it. I actually posted it here and a few people after me managed to successfully get it done.

            • @aspirepranesh: How do you find them to the Jabra 85T? I only got mine today so haven't had a chance to fully test them out yet

              • @greater mimic: My biggest issue with the Jabra's was the fit & seal. Because of their oval inserts for the tips, it was always leaking in outside noise. Sony's are much better because of the new tips and passive noise isolation is way better.

I haven't tested them for voice calls, but connected them for webex calls and there were no issues.

The case on both of them are similar, 85T's earbuds are slightly smaller but I find the Sony's to be more aligned to fit my ears.

                • @aspirepranesh: Yeah the oval shape is a bit odd. I need to play around with the tips today and hopefully get a better fit on the 85Ts

                  • @greater mimic: I tried looking for after market foam eartips for 85T's and gave up. Only ones I could find wwre on ebay US.

They would sound/fit a lot better with foam eartips for sure.

                    • @aspirepranesh: I've never used foam tips so I should try those sometime, though I was reading that the spinfit CP360 tips are apparently quite good so I might buy those and see how that goes.

These definitely fit a bit differently to my 65Ts which is a bit of a shame… Unfortunately I lost those somehow and needed to buy new earbuds fast and managed to get a cheap pair thanks to the Qantas store deal. Maybe next time I'll look at the Sony ones a bit more first

                      • @greater mimic: I had to make use of my qantas points and got the 85T's from their store during a sale.

They did serve me well, but the ear tips were a big let down for me. I personally have always preferred to use foam ear tips as they provide a much snugglier fit and passive noise isolation. Do give them a go if you have never used foam ear tips.

I have always loved the sound signature of Sony's though.

                        • @aspirepranesh: Yeah will def try both (Sony and foam tips) sometime in the future. I just managed to fit some circular tips onto them (it was a struggle) and already they feel a bit better, so will wait for my spinfit tips to come and hopefully they will feel good

            • @aspirepranesh: Does the XM4 have vents to equalize the air pressure?

And hows the fit if you use it for walks and light exercise? Do your ears hurt after a while?

I bought the Airpods Pro for $240 and am loving them so far. Also got the comply v2 tips for them.

              • @HumbleCat: As far as I know, they dont have any vents. But none of my earphones previously have had one. So I dont know the difference :)

I used it for walks and light runs, much better than 85T's bcoz of these new eartips which are foam. I personally have had no issues with them hurting my ears. But I havent used them for more than 60 mins at a go as I am off gym and working from home now. Im keen to test them at the gym if we get out of lockdown today as the music at my gym is extremely loud and 85T's sadly don't block them out completely.

      • Just went to buy the XM4 from the Good Guys and they want to charge me $55 for delivery (Ipswich, QLD). Yeah, nah, I'll wait.

        • Stock is very low. My pre order was delayed by more than a month. I believe the retailers dont have any stock and they are going to get Sony/their warehouse to ship them to you.

          • +1

@aspirepranesh: Got it from Bing Lee at the same price point and only $8 shipping.

      • I was interested in the XM4s until i looked at the comparison to my galaxy buds plus and they fall short in nearly every way, other than of course no ANC.

        https://www.rtings.com/headphones/tools/compare/samsung-gala…

for what it's worth anyway, when i have my buds+ up, i can't hear anything going on around me in transit/walking around/office work. might be different in construction or something but from the ANC reviews, the sony's won't be able to really do much about that anyway.

      Got mine. It’s awesome.

    • They did selling xm4 for $ 26x

  • it has been at this price for a month or two now…

  • I own the seconds. The battery life is terrible. 40min max. Maybe it’s just my unit.

    • +1

Listing says 12 month warranty- 40 min is a joke.

      • Yeah I’m in talks with Sony.

        • Just go via eBay if you are still close enough to the purchase date. It should save you bother.

          • +1

@lukethefish: Nah bought it in October last year. Too late for eBay I think.

    • +4

I own a pair have had for over a year and 4o mins is not right. I get a couple of hours easy before having to put back in the case to charge. At this price these are great.

Noise cancelled is good. Not as good a over ear headphones but if you have noise cancelling on and a playing soemtjong on then you will likely not hear any outside noise. I can comfortably use this while mowing the lawn.

    • Seriously? My 3 year old jabra 65ts are getting around 3 hours still. Must be the units

    • So do I, get nearly 4 hours - think yours need replacing,

    • Thanks everyone, I actually thought this was because I got the seconds. I’m already got in touch with Sony.

    • I got seconds and get hours from mine. There must be a problem with yours.

  • +8

Cant recommend these. Couldn’t get a good fit to save my life.

    • +4

I have the same issue. Apparently it's our head lol. Heaps of people can even run with these! If I just scratch my nose a bit too heavily I catapult them half way across the room ¬¬ but yeah apparently it's us lol. Some people have suggested some specific memory foam tips that are meant to help a lot? But I haven't found/tried them yet.

      • Ehhhhh I’m not convinced better tips work, i wish they would just add an ear fin for hold.

      • +1

Comply TrueGrip Pro tips fixed the issue for me. Now they stay in reliably. Still wouldn't run in them though; they're too bulky. But they don't fall out now whilst walking and talking and I'm happy about that.

      • +2

I have a similar issue with mine too. I can wear them and walk around but as soon as I bend over to tie my shoelaces or do any exercise they fall out. It's a real shame because I do like them for the sound. I ended up buying Galaxy Buds Plus. The sound is not as good, but they fit really well.

      • Try shark fin or hook.

    • +1

I purchased these 18 months ago and run in them 5 days a week. Haven't had them fall out once but I guess it's each to their own :)

    • Same here. It's just too heavy and hurt my ear canal. Sold it and bought Jabra 85T instead.

    • It fells down when I breathe, can't fit in my ears :D

  • +9

I like how these are the easiest truly wireless earbuds to take apart, making it possible to replace the batteries when they eventually give out. https://www.ifixit.com/News/35377/which-wireless-earbuds-are…

    • +1

Absolutely brilliant these; and pretty much the sole reason I got them. The planned, rather forced, obsolescence we have in tech these days is absolutely horsesh….terrible. Sony has done an incredible job with the battery here.

      • +1

Ironic since Sony was a key player in the rise of planned obsolescence in the 90's.

        • +1

True, many of the tactics that Apple used were pioneered by sony - inventing their own chargers, ports, media formats, digital formats,

Sony always failed because their stuff was too expensive for mass adoption. Apple solved this by offering the walled garden experience. But without the costs of cutting edge technology

          • +1

@greatlamp: Apple is pretty much the definition of "costs of cutting edge technology" only without the cutting edge technology. Their desktops are just laptop/mobile variants of hardware without batteries at 3x the part cost, their laptops are usually 1-2 generations behind and cost 3-5x their equivalent non-apple laptops.

  • +2

Mine won’t charge after yr. I bought brand new one.

    • I had mine for 2 years, prior to selling them they still lasted 3-5hrs per charge.

    • +2

You are entitled to a replacement under ACL even if your 12 month express warranty has passed.

  • The Edifier neobuds pro might be a better buy at the same price point.
Amazing sound quality with hi-res certificate as well as decent anc, love my pairs thus far.

  • Can anyone give more info on the battery life situation?

    Also, how are these refurbished?

I don't need them for noise cancelling, just replacements for some bose in ear sport headphones and as an alternative to earpods.

    • I use them 5-6 times a week two hours+ a day running, gym and while driving. I purchased them 18 months ago and havent had any issues. I charge the case less than once a week. I purchased brand new

    • The 'refurbs' are often brand new stock labelled as repackaged (due to damaged packaging/customer returns etc). I bought a pair from the Sony Refurb store, it was labelled as 'repack' but was completely undamaged and the box and all parts were factory sealed.

YMMV but refurb is a very general term when it comes to Sony.

  • IMO, they're a bit too bulky and the lack of water resistance is a major downside.

  • No issues with my refurbished ones, only found one battery lasts longer then other by a short margin. Only charged mine a dozen times in 4months.
I use the largest ear tip, as got big head lol

  • I bought these after losing my jaybird vista.
They are awful. Keeps dropping connection then comes back, battery life is good on my pair (refurbish from eBay)
I don’t use them for calls usually out for a run or walk.
Often they are paired and sound still comes out my phone. Then have to turn off Bluetooth and back on.
    Very annoying

"Seconds" I guess everyone in Sydney wouldve gotten the C-19 by now so this is acceptable. K

  • galaxy buds pro or xm4 ? there is a $150+ difference tho

  • +1

They fall out realllllly easily even walking around the house…..I like them for office, hate for anything else. NC is shocking.

  • Bought a pair of these a while back on one of the $199 deals on here.

Pretty happy with them. It should go without saying audio quality and ANC definitely not like my QC35 II's.

They fit fairly well but I definitely can't run with them in. Sometimes even a sweaty hike will cause them to fall out.

Battery life is good. Definitely get a few hours out of them before having to pop them back in the case.

Spigen make a good cover for the case to stop it getting scratched up but I think I paid $35 for it which was probably way too much but I always buy their phone cases so I know they are decent.

  • How is it compared to jabra 75t?
    Worth upgrade?

    Thanks

  • +1

I've had this for 2 years, they work great. and they fit me very well. if not, there are 6 additional set of earbuds out of the box for you to try.

I went one size up and for the clear silicone one. Never had any issues with battery, or pairing, or anything - they just worked great.

The only gripe I had was the the carrying case was relatively huge compared to the competition, and am happy to see they addressed it in xm4 without reducing battery life.

I now also own the XM4s - I don't find their fit any better than the xm3s and theres only 2 additional earbuds options instead of 6. Improvements seems incremental and nothing mindblowing (Xm3s already did a great job) and to me the biggest diff is MUCH smaller case, and better touch control on the earbuds.

I posted this on the new Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro post but thought I'd post here as well in case someone was interested.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro $188.99 from kogan

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/heybattery-samsung-galaxy-buds-…

Appears it is the same model

    This vs the Sony WF1000XM3

    Sony is $61.99 cheaper.

    According to reviews -
    Sony has better noise cancelling.
Samsung has IPX7 water resistance rating. (sony, none)
Sony has better sound quality. (apparently)
    Samsung has better mic quality.
    Samsung has wireless charging.
Samsung is about half the size.

Personally I will likely go with Galaxy Buds Plus for $112.99.

    https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-galaxy-buds-plus-sm-r17…

Galaxy Plus features over the Pro

They fit better with the wing tips.
No active noise cancelling, though I already have Sony WH-1000XM4 over ears if I need that.
11.5 hours charge (nearly twice that of the pro).
    Only IPX2 water resistance rating.
    Else sound/call quality appears similar.

  • +1

Seconds!! .. Buyer beware. I bought XM4's from this eBay shop and they had connectivity issues. They made me jump through a lot of hoops and I waited a long time for a refund. NEVER again.

    • exact same experience

  • For those debating between this or any other in-ears. Recently been gifted an airpods pro. I found the best featutre of the airpods pro is the ‘transparency’ mode - from my understanding uses the mics and the vents to equalise pressure in the ears. This results to the natural sounding passthrough and removes the ‘under water feeling’ you get from other in-ears. I think no other in-ears can match this.

    • Can't say I'd ever use this feature, because I'd rather take them off if I was talking to someone but YMMV.

  • ima wtf with earbuds being called headphones

    but maybe that's just me

I bought a set of SONY earbuds - with supposedly great noise-cancellation

I returned them after no noise-cancellation was detected by me

the shop tried them and said they were working - I listened carefully at length - and finally detected - oh yeah - there's a tiny reduction in a high-frequency hissing - but no reduction at all in the very loud low-frequency rumbling noise from a bus idling at the bus stop I was standing near

so that was yeah nah from me

if I want noise-cancelling I use one of now 3 pair of Bose over-ear headphones we have - QC21, QC35 and I've recently bought a spare pair of new QC35ii for if/when the old ones wear out from overuse.
