All single house portable aircon suck. They suck hot air into the room. They do function as a dehumidifier, if that's what you need.

    • No idea why those dual hoses are all gone … it was more fun with dual doses portable AC

    • Yes, but an actual dehumidifer does a better job while using 1/10th of the power. Don't buy a portable AC like this one.

      • Not if you live in Queensland

        • A dehumidifer will always do a better job of being a dehumidifier, regardless of where you live.

I do live in Queensland. If you want air-conditioning that actually works, you need a split system - these suck.

    • All single house portable aircon suck.

      They also blow ;)

These portable units are less efficient at cooling a room because of the way they work. I had a 3.5kw portable, and replaced it with a 2.7kw window unit. The window unit did a much better job at cooling the room, although the portable did get the room temp. down.

If you can't have a split or window unit, these portables do work, but I would suggest them as a spot cooler, rather than a room cooler.

They will pump out just as much cold air, but as you rightly point out, they have to suck in hot air (or cold air as a RC unit) from outside.

  • price is really cheap. however all the portable AC have noise issue. this one is no exception. Noise: 65dB. that's a deal breaker. to me, it's unbearable.

Yeah i used to use a Kogan one when super desperate. It worked, but plenty of noise and as soon turn it off the unit itself i swear would passively radiate heat warming the room up in no time.

now that sounds like a real piece of shit product.

It is what it is, portable aircons are largely similar all same drawbacks. There is only so much you can polish a turd. Split systems are designed the way they are for very good reason.

I like how the exhaust tube is not displayed in any of the pics. Good luck placing it in the middle of the room as shown in the pics.
For a $100 more, last year I went with a reverse cycle kogan one, it’s a bit noisy but did the job fine last summer(and a few times as a heater this winter), and works with Google and Alexa too.
Ps: I’m still trying to find a dual hose portable AC, I really do not understand why they are not selling them down-under.

    • Isn't one hose enough to exhaust the hot indoor air? What does the 2nd hose do?

      • +2

A single hose system will suck out inside air to exhaust outside for cooling the condenser, which end up exhausting air in the room you just cooled and make hotter air leak inside your room. Two hose tries to avoid this situation by using outside air to cool the condenser.

The single hose does not remove the hot indoor air. It’s a bit more complicated than this. You can read more here https://www.eliteheatingandac.com/blog/single-hose-vs-dual-h…

      • yes, 1 hose functional, but not efficiency. 2nd hose intake outside air, which does not use the cool air indoor.

Great video on YouTube explaining why not to buy a portable air-conditioner: https://youtu.be/_-mBeYC2KGc

Portable air-conditioning don't work. Too impractical like hose and too noisy as someone said earlier.

    • they do work(they do lower the room temp they are in), but they are less efficient, they are noisy, not practical etc.

  • I have a Devanti portable aircon purchased in 2018. It cools okay but is too noisy for the bedroom even at the lowest setting. I keep it for the occasional guests but wouldn't use it regularly myself.

For a bedroom, why not just get a ceiling fan? They are very effective in bed at night, unless humidity is extreme.

      • I have a Vornado 660 blower fan (highly recommend) that does a decent job except in the most humid of nights (>80%RH).

I bought the Devanti as it was very well priced and should cool better (being compressor-based). I set it up properly by siting on nearby tallboy and exhausting through a properly sealed window. Cooling was indeed better but it was like sleeping next to a running motorbike. It was loud!

I ended up having a 2.5kW split system installed for just under $1K. There is simply no alternative for proper bedroom cooling.

"Silently maintains optimal temperature and humidity for pleasant sleep."

  • I have this. Does the job in a small room only, but is very noisy and need to be near a window for the exhaust
