Automatic Coffee Burr Grinder at Aldi $29.99 from Feb 29

210

EDIT: Reviews from a couple of members who have gone and bought this suggest that it's a pretty cr*ppy machine, so probably not worth the trouble.

Long story short, this is by far the cheapest burr grinder we're likely to see. A long time ago Harris coffee was running a promo whereby you send in 6 barcdes to redeem a coffee grinder, which turned out to be a breville (blade type) which at the time retailed for about $50, so not a bad offer.

We'd been using this until recently and were happy enough with the results until I picked up a second-hand sunbeam burr grinder and BOY can you tell the difference (yeah, I know, a lot of you already knew that! lol) Anyway, the burr grinder died earlier in the week. My daughter informed me a while ago that she has a Breville Smart Grinder on layby for us, so we don't want to fork out big heaps for another one in the meantime, so this is a good option for us.

For those who don't want to outlay a minimum of $60 to $80 for a burr grinder, this seems a pretty good buy. It would have the regular 60 days satifaction return offer attached, and warranty if it misbehaved.

I know where I'll be at 8am next Wednesday. :)

Thank you for pointing this bargain out. Was looking out for one of these at a cheap price. Don't really drink coffee but have a coffee machine sitting unopened in a box for years and wanted to have a play with it LOL!! This grinder will be perfect. Thanks!!

You sir win the OzB user of the year :D Not only do you not grind coffee - you don't even drink coffee, let alone from your own machine! …and yet you snapped up this bargain.

  • Comes with 3 years warranty. A bargain.

FWIW I bought one of these last time they were out - the grinder itself is so-so but it gets exceptionally messy as the very cheap clear plastic box for the grinds generates a large amount of static electricity (something Sunbeam had problems with on their cheaper grinder range).

As a result coffee is very hard to get out of the box and I found you had to wash it out everytime or you'd end up with stale grinds next use.

I took it back after a week as it was just too messy and cumbersome to use because of this one static problem. :-)

I only frenchpress my coffee but bought the Sunbeam burr grinder that was $30 delivered from Big W (a few weeks back on OzB) - its fantastic and can still be gotten for close to this price.

    • Happy to hear the Sunbeam burr grinder is going well. I bought 2 (one for my wife, one as a gift for my brother). I still didn't get around to using it as we have a bit of ground coffee to get through first.

      • Oh they're great. Really good build quality, easy to use, cleaning is a breeze and actually perfect for plunger/frenchpress/aeropress users as you grind directly into the maker etc. You'll be happy with it for sure.

    • Looking at the pic of the aldi one, looks like there's a little spout there? so might be better off taking off the plastic bin, and grinding directly into your group cup.

      • Unless the design has changed, and it looks identical to me - there's no external spout. See how you go anyway - worst case you can return almost question free - haha as I did to mine - full of grinds and in a real mess but they were fine with that. :-)

Nikko - Cheap grinder, i'm fairly sure you'll get cheap results.
OP says it's for fill in whilst waiting on a Smart though, so perhaps if it lasts a month it might be good.

We have a great one reduced to the same price that is tried and tested. Many happy customers, it is Maxim Branded

Some of the cheap stuff sold at Aldi is very low quality

  • I take it this is not a "conical" burr, but still OK for coffee, unlike a blade grinder.
Whats the difference between this and a conical?
I think it was something to do with spinning fast and heating the grounds.

Ummm I've no idea what you mean as I think you'll find there's only a conical burr grinder - no such thing as a burr grinder - people have just shortened it to 'burr' but exactly the same thing. :-)

    • Flat burr grinders like my Mazzer appear to be better than conical style, but hey, anything is better than the chopping blade style grinder.

  • .

  • had one of these, but the grind was nowhere near fine enough for espresso even on the lowest setting. Very disappointing.

Luckily Aldi have the best returns policy in australia and I got my money back.

    • Just picked one up today and I was very disappointed. Like tightwad I found the finest "espresso" grind was unusable - coarse and chunky, not even suitable for plunger coffee. Not putting it anywhere near an espresso machine or aeropress. Not sure if I should try an exchange or just get my money back and go for a more expensive grinder.
Has anyone else had better luck?

      • Id be keen to get others thoughts too. I piked one up, its still in the box. Wont open it if its no good for my Gaggia Classic.

        • I've got a cheapish flat burr grinder that has a lever to select between coarse and fine, but underneath there is a hole for a screwdriver or allen key which will adjust the mill plates closer (I actually closed mine to zero and it started grinding against itself, wearing away the face). Perhaps there is a similar pre-adjustment on this model as well?

        • This was an issue even with Sunbeams EM series and Breville's Smart Grinder. Both companies provided shims to allow finer adjustments of the grind.

Perhaps you could open up the grinder and jury rig one? It's only $30…worth experimenting on.

      • A shame-would have been a good buy if it was any good. I've edited the description.

      • I found the same thing, even on the finest setting it wasn't fine enough for my fairly forgiving cheap Sunbeam espresso machine.

Taking it back, ordered the BIGW Sunbeam stick grinder deal other people have mentioned instead - $5 cheaper and actually getting good reviews!

If I was going to keep it I'd see if there was any way to adjust the plates closer together, but frankly with that Sunbeam grinder being $25 it's not worth the hassle.

  • Waste of time and money. I bought one yesterday and it died in 5 min, returned it back today and got the refund.

  • Big W website has $30 sunbeams with no delivery fee at the moment.
