Q Acoustics Q3030i Bookshelf Speakers $699 Delivered (RRP $999) @ Addicted to Audio

330

Are you stuck at home in lockdown listening to music through tin cans? Would you like some nicer speakers so you can bath in the waters of luxuriously rich sound waves instead? Well my friend I have something good for you. Don't suffer any longer. Feel the music. Get in the groove and dance away those stuck-in-golden-syrup lockdown lethargy vibes.

These Q Acoustics 3030i's are passive speakers. You need an amplifier to make them work. You can make them sound great with something as cheap as the SMSL AD18, like I use on SDB equaliser mode: https://www.amazon.com.au/AD18-Amplifier-Bluetooth-SpeakerSm…

These have a 6.5 inch driver so can really pump out some lower mids to upper bass range, making music sound surprisingly rich. They sound great in my small lounge room and fill it up easily with lots of detail and warmth for TV, movies and music. These are fun speakers, not clinically flat and not ear piercingly treble focused.

I own these and bought from a previous deal from Rio for $699. They have been even cheaper from Rio https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/594464 for $599, but it was Walnut colour only. This new deal has all the colours on special.

  • Would these be much of an upgrade from the Q Acoustics Q3010?

    • +11

I would get a sub instead of upgrading your 3010s

      • +2

Agreed, a decent sub makes a HUGE difference.

        • I've got the Q Acoustucs QB12 and it's a beast.

      • Doesn't sound like there would be much difference so I'll stick with the 3010s :)

        • Get 2 subs.. huger difference

    • +3

Yes, they are an upgrade. Yes you will notice the difference.

But it’s a bit like people who are constantly buying midfi massdrop headphones. If you are going to upgrade, you are better off upgrading to something significantly better, rather than spending the same amount of money on 3 small steps.

As an owner of a hd6xx, he4xx, and meze 99 I feel personally attacked

        • +1

You should get the AKG 7XX…

          • @MisterTee: All are inferior to the mighty kph30i anyway

          • @MisterTee: I sold my AKG's after hearing the hd6xx. Both are great but I felt that the hd6xx is a little more musical and it didn't make sense to have multiple wired headphones around the place.

It was about then that I realised I was playing with a serious audiophile addiction issue and I stopped spending cash on gear.

Now just trying to be content on the PC listening to my audioengine 5+'s teamed with a monoprice sub fed a Topping e30.

When I'm at home I'm listening to the HD6xx's on a sonata USB DAC through my phone, unless I'm in the lounge room, then I'm using the samsung q90r soundbar.

When on the go I just chill with my sennheiser momentum 2 true wireless's.

Thank god I stopped before it really got out of hand!!! :P

      • Agreed - hence why I just went all the way and got the Concept 500's last time on OZB: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/599156

    • I got both.
Night and day difference to my ears.
3010s have been gathering dust since.

      • Surround bro, use the 3010s as rears.

  • +1

I can't get over why these new QA speakers are so expensive compared to their older models.

My 3020's a few years ago only cost like $400 & the 3010's were $300.

    • -6

      It's called inflation

    • It’s not a new version of the same speaker. All the 30x0i are current.

It’s a higher end model, with a (much) bigger cabinet and a bigger driver.

      • I understand it's a physically bigger speaker (slightly), but at over twice the price?

        • I guess no different than a base C class and a C63 AMG. Same size car, just bigger engine lol or 128gb iPhone to 512gb

        • +1

The enclosure volume and the area of the bass driver are almost twice those of the 3020i (which are in turn 25% bigger than the 3010). That’s a pretty significant difference.

          • @jjcf: Yeah, but how much can a bit more MDF possibly cost…

    • +2

The 3020's were definitely at this price early in their lifespan, they just had a lot of deals, because Qacoustics changed their dealers. So a lot of dealers had to get rid of their stock before a cetain date. At least that's what the one of the guys told me. I think Addicted to Audio are a main dealer now.

    +1 for description

  • Does anyone use these for nearfield listening i.e. computer desk?
I'm setting up a brand new desk and am looking for some speakers.
They are quite large and they might be a bit overwhelming for the distance?

    • Probably not the best for that. I have the 3020's about 1.5m away from me for a stereo set up and wouldn't want to be closer than that. These are even bigger again.

Have you got an amp already? If not some powered speakers like Yamaha HS7's are a good option and can be had for similar price on sale. Would also personally say they're a much better speaker too. You would need a audio interface with them- which are about $100ish for something decent too.

      • Thank you for the reply! I was eyeing off the 3020i for those reasons and the 3010i seemed a little smaller.
I have been running some Audioengine A5s for nearly a decade but they will live with my other desk, I'm ok with a larger speaker.

Was planning to buy a DAC/AMP like the SMSL AD18 (https://www.smsl-audio.com/portal/product/detail/id/566.html) to power these, plus plug in some headphones
My other alternative is a set of Kanto Yu4 which are powered, but I went down the rabbit hole trying to get USB audio from my Mac and then run a optical to the speakers which is how I ended up here.

        • You wanted to change from the a5s?

That's what I use and I can't imagine much better sound tbh.

    • +1

These are huge, real thicc bois

Cheers for the heads up on the sale, picked up a matching centre Q3090i for my Q3020i's

  • I have 3050i and 3090 for a 3.1 set up. Would this 3030i be an overkill as surrounds?

    • I would say so. a couple of 3020i's or 3010's would suffice.

Nice find. Lifestyle did not have them on special at the time, it was full retail. Maybe you can make a new post to let everyone know about the deal you found.
