How Do You Justify It to Yourself Owning Multiple of One Type of Item?

I always see OzBargainers saying they've already got 2, 3, 4, 5, etc number of something (e.g. headphones, powerbanks, wall-chargers with PD and 5 USBs, ), usually something that doesn't require multiple of something to work (e.g. tyres).

How do you justify owning so many, and how do you justify buying more? Especially when you have more than one can justify?

I own 3 power banks, and simply cannot justify buying anymore even when great deals pop up.

    Impulsive behavior.

The pursuit of bargains is compelling.

If you only have three, there is no Plan D.

    • How many Plans do you need? :O

      • If there didn't need to be more than one plan, there would be no plural. :+)

  • +9

    As "spares".

    • Cute. I assume that's the main reason everyone would use when making an impulse purchase of something they already own at home.

    1. Other people at home keep stealing my cable/charger/earphones/powerbank.
    2. I have lost count how many headphones/earphones that has been replaced this year due to the cord being damaged or ripped.
    • +2

I think you need to treat your headphones better.

      • I am still rocking my earphones from iPhone 4S. It is other people in the household who needs to be move around the house with a device in their hands. :)

    • And the rotten little green guys, with pointy hats, mostly from Ireland, keep hiding things—-

  • "how do you justify it to yourself?"

    == nothing lasts forever ==

  • If somebody said you could have 10 PS5 at $100 each I know what I would do lol .
Does that extreme example justify having multiples ?

    • i think that counts as an unrealistic possibility.
If I can buy unlimited number of lambos for $100, you bet Imma buy as many as I can.
In that sense, that's a reasonable justification for purchasing multiple of one items (but only under these certain circumstances).

      • -2

10 X PS5 @ $750 each will have the same answer and have enough cats and dogs very realistic lol

  • +2

You can never have enough flashlights.

      flashlights

I think you meant to type 'e' instead of 'a'.

inside out, back to front = maximum impact

      • +1

roommate uses inside out, back to front. it's super effective!

        • +4

I'm concerned how you noticed this

        • How did you assess the effectiveness?

    • I think Costanza has 365.25

  • why is justification needed? Why do you feel so guilty about things in general?

  • +1

Some things it is convenient to have a couple eg charging cords, have one plugged in at work, one plugged in by my beside, one in the lounge one in the study and one in my bag

    • +1

That's a pretty sensible justification. I expect OP would mean another 6 cords sitting in a drawer and then buying more when a bargain comes up.

I sometimes have a few cords in the drawer because the kids randomly break them when they use their devices while charging and bend the cable 180deg at the connector while it's tensioned enough to be plucked like a guitar string.

      • Yep I agree. Or already owning 20 'home tshirts' to lounge around in (enough for you to wear a clean one for two weeks straight without washing), and then deciding to buy more coz they were on sale. Is it literally just because one wants to feel the dopamine hit of buying something cheap?

        • +1

Yes dopamine is probably the answer. The thrill is in the buying, not the receiving.

I remember reading a paper that studied drug addicts - it reported that their dopamine levels were altered mostly when they organised a buy with their dealer over the phone (call/text) rather than when they picked it up or consumed. Something about dopamine not being a "hit" resultant of getting something but a hit causing the drive to get that something in the first place.

    • That's sensible, especially for something that's easily/frequently damaged. My question was more for when someone has more than one can justify using the aforementioned reason. For example, I saw on a recent powerbank post that someone already had 10 powerbanks (presumably working) in their drawer, and they decided to get another one.

At some point, it's literally just wasting money for the sake of using money. right?

      • Yeah that is a bit weird. 2 or 3 I can imagine, if you have several devices and you're on a holiday where you might have no power for a day. 10 is a bit crazy.

  • headphones: one for work, one for personal use.
Powerbanks: upgrades over the years and no need to be super organised to remember to charge them consistently
Wall chargers: multiple devices needing to charge at once at different locations.

  • +1

I feel like crap for being wasteful and try to run it down eventually or find alternate uses or donate.

    E.g.:

    • there was a cheap deal on undies - will last for years to come, but they do wear out and you can use the worn out ones as rags.
    • powerbanks - more than I need - I stick a USB led light on it and use as reading lights (I actually used it last night and felt a bit better).
    • near brand new shoes I never used - donated to Vinnies
    • The powerbanks point is interesting and speaks to the essence of my question. I doubt spending $14.95 to $29.99 (typical price of a powerbank on OZB) is worth having a reading light (or maybe it is - but sounds like you were looking for a use for the powerbank šŸ˜)

      • +2

This was surprisingly useful as I've only been using the bed for 2 things.

Light was perfectly placed and right brightness but fell asleep after 10 mins and had to pack up. Now I've got to get the rest of the family to use reading lights to make me feel better. :)

  • Having more than you need is preferable to being caught lacking.

    • +2

Depends on what the item is. a phone charging cable? sure, it's frustrating when you can't find one around the house or in the car when your phone's on 1%. Plus cables a cheap enough to justify buying just to have some spares around for when they go missing/break.

Powerbanks and $300+ headphones? Not so sure…

  • For houses and cars, can rent them out to others.

    • That's true - can never have enough houses (only thing stopping most people is financial means and morality?).
Cars though - who's renting cars from private individuals to justify? Unless you're a corporation, in which case my question doesn't really apply.

  • If I don't have spare, what can I give to someone in need?

    • +1

      Money šŸ˜…
It's more useful for those in need.

But then again, everyone needs that dopamine hit of buying something they don't need. right?

      • Rich people will spend $300 on a fancy lunch without further thought.

I'll spend that on meds for my wife for a month. HOWEVER - just because I need cash, doesn't mean I can't give it to anyone else who needs it too!

Start cycling and you'll realise that n+1 is more than logical.

For those who own multiple of one type of item, how do you justify it to yourself?

I own 2 shoes as I am not an amputee….

    • Hehe jv is back in town :)

    • Note my qualifier in my question to exclude any items that require multiples to work. Shoes fall in that category.

      …waiting for next sassy response.

      • that require multiples to work

        One shoe still 'works'…

        • i mean to work as they are intended for. Shoes don't really do much if one foot isn't enclosed.

  • In my opinion you can never have enough
    - Headphones
    - Guitars
    - Bicycles
Each brings it own unique pleasures depending on your specific usage and mood at the time

    • "never have enough" - i'm not sure that's entirely true. But then again, it might be true for someone insanely rich where spending $300 on headphones or $1000 on a bicycle is as frivolous and trivial as buying some candy at a gas station (which for me, is too much of a rip off already).

      • How many yachts can you water-ski behind? (Wall Street,1987)

      • Ok maybe not the correct choice of words, maybe more apt to say you can never stop "lusting after more"

        • Demi Moore? lol

  • own multiple of one type of item

on a related issue: the 6+k books

    Options (not mece)/comments:

    • rate of purchase has dropped close to 0 (not 0 as these "spark joy") over last few years
    • read faster
    • love reading with the kids in my lap (even just going through the pictures of the reference works) and more advanced discussion as they get older
    • street library/basket of free books outside the front yard for passers by to pick up
    • donate to libraries/market place
    • some will pass onto kids
  • Im trying to answer your question, but I'm not entirely sure I horde items just because they are on sale. Maybe one-off purchases? e.g. I bought a Steam stream box (whatever it's called), thinking I'll use it, but I never did.

The rest of stuff I either stock up on cos:
    - serves slightly different purpose: mtb bike and road bike, sleeping bag summer and winter, gaming headset vs music noise cancelling
    - I class em as consumables: extra $1 USB cables, always a use for em
    - my body dimensions are non-standard: I've been known to buy a couple pants/shirts if they are on sale and they fit magically

  • +1

Anything to fill the void in my soul

  • No Ragrets

  • Depends on the item and who I'm justifying it to.

Babe, it was 2 for the price of one when I bought the extra!
Two for the price of one. (But pay for one in cash and the other on plastic).

Why buy 1 when you can buy 2 at double the price? (Heard that somewhere.)
    It's a spare.
    Backup.
One for the car, one for the home.
Damn, there is it - couldn't find the other one when I needed it, so had to buy another.
    Lot's of reasons.

This one does different things… (Look, sound, result etc…)

  • I would own a lot less tv's and mobile phones if people would stop posting irresistible bargains on here..
Damn you ozb, damn you..!! :-)

  • I discovered that only having 1 dollar wasnā€™t enough so I try (not always successfully) and get as many as I can. Am I OCD?? I have a similar problem with my hair only in reversešŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø Although I gotta say you can never have enough eyelidsā€¦.

  • I've just bought "another" copy of a particular bluray disc, where this one promises 4K, and wider colour, all from the original master.
    Sometimes, people upgrade.
Maybe eBay will get my superseded regular print.

  • I have more than 10 battery bank. 5 for everyday use which I hardly use them once in a year, I charge my phone everynight; a few for day trips n then a few for long trip. Then I bought one with cables n then I bought a solar one. Think of buy one for my laptop.
Have phone chargers in every room n also some in the draw as back up.

Regret not buying at least one more pair of KT26 when Big-W still had them on sale.
Reason? They no longer sell them :'(

  • I mean, if I buy a dozen bottle of whiskey, it just saving me driving to the BottleO until next week

  • I own 2 cars of the same model, different colour.

  • I bulk buy household goods.
Eg. toiletries, toilet paper, cleaning supplies etc.

    1. I buy when cheap, and buying bulk tends to be cheaper normally.
    2. These are items Iā€™d rather have a spare for when I run out of.

Tech I tend to research upgrades, and they donā€™t really appear on ozbargain often. I use staticice a lot for tech.
If I get duplicate items, itā€™s more to upgrade what I already have.

Something I currently have a fair amount of are plant potsā€¦ but repotting I need them for sure ;)

  • I have 10 mechanical keyboard
    5 mice
At least 10 pairs of headphones

Why? They are all unique and I enjoy them.

It has actually helped me working from home since 2020. Can change it up.
