Safe and Effective Disinfectant for Home Use?

Hi all, just looking for recommendations for effective but safe products to use to disinfect the home, including the floor.

I realise that there is no "magic bullet" one solution so wondering what Ozbargainers think would be best for:

  • Floor cleaning

  • Hard surface (no food) like bathrooms, desk,

  • Hard surface with food in the kitchen

Thanks heaps :)

Why do you need to Disinfectant?

Floor- hot water and vinegar or eucalyptus oil or methylated spirits.

Benches- Soapy water and/or vinegar will clean it enough for the average family.

Having said that I bought some disinfectant wipes from Bunnings for the bathrooms. 40 wipes for like a $1. Saves me rinsing the cloth and the bathroom is grubbier so it's easier just to throw it out.

    • Yeah I use the disinfectant wipes from Dettol but they are expensive… I just want to keep things clean in general but not sure if the effective germ killing ones are safe and if the "natural" ones are just useless with germs

you don't need to kill all germs.

If you scrub surfaces with soapy water and then wipe it clean with a clean cloth, you will remove the vast majority of germs just like you do when you wash your dishes by hand.

You don't disinfect your dishes and glasses that you directly eat/drink from, so why the need to disinfect all surfaces of a home that you don't even lick.

Even with the Corona virus, washing your hands with soap and water will dislodge viruses and bacteria.

        • That is why surgeons scrub their hands before they go into surgery not use hand sanitiser.

You'd wonder why people were tripping over each other for sanitiser when they can just buy some cheap home brand soap.

          • @netjock: The tv told them you need to use sanitiser

Disinfectant, dettol and most of the wet wipe products are based on benzalkonium chloride at various dilutions. The cheapest source for this I've found is Bunnings pool algaecide at $20 for 5l 15% active ingredient.

  • Steam clean.

For most our general household cleaning eg the kitchen bench, we just put dishwashing liquid and water in a spray bottle, spray the surface and wipe with a microfibre cloth. Cloths go in the wash and are reused.

Occasionally I use domestic cleaner on the bathrooms, it bleaches but doesn’t remove mould. I follow up a couple of days later with vinegar which inhibits mould growth.

For tiled floors I just ‘floor cleaner’ in warm water and a mop. Or for a quick clean the same dishwashing liquid/water solution in a spray mop or the normal spray, plus an old towel to mop up excess moisture.

Unless you have some sort of compromised immune system or severe allergies in the household, the basics will do the job.

Vinegar and water, or eucalyptus and water will clean sufficiently.

Agreed with others that you really don’t need something so heavy duty for home use. But… If you insist on a disinfectant, good old Pine O Cleen will do everything you ask including disinfecting the floors. The Woolworths, Coles, Aldi home brands are just as good.
