[NSW] Am I Allowed to Buy Something Essential from a Facebook Marketplace Seller?

Ok, so I found on FB someone selling some kid DVDs and cars. My kids need cars and DVD to remain entertained. I could buy from a shop with click and collect for 10x the price. Or from this person

I am not in a hotspot LGA.

This Facebook seller lives in my same LGA and less than 5km away. I can pay them with PayID prior to attending. They can leave the parcel in their driveway and I can pick it up contactless.

I am fully vaxed for COVID. Both doses.

In my mind, this is safer than click and collect anyway and it is something that I need for my children.

Thoughts?

This pandemic has really redefined words like essential

    • The tobacconist at my local shopping centre is still open…

Victoria just legalised sex work, during a pandemic, as they institute the harshest lockdown yet.

It's not like it's the profession is known to spread disease…

It's almost like politicians enjoy making laws for themselves and their cronies. Our leadership class is turning into a rulership class. The free are turning back into serfs. The illusion of differences between political parties is dissolving, they are both the same. Both sides are a uniparty just like in the USA.

It's been very lucrative this year for me due to many people asking themselves this question when there's a great bargain to be had.

I just get in my car and go get it, then sell for profit.

    • Just got a 2015 256gb Macbook Air for $40 that just needs the battery replaced which can be had for $35. The going rate is $300+.

      Score!

I find it hard to believe how many people think that OP is somehow contributing to the outbreak.

Although it is not considered as "essential" as buying groceries, the precautions they are using are a whole lot safer. How is the contactless transaction a greater risk than having a delivery driver drop off a package/groceries? Yet people that are ordering fast food deliveries and packages aren't frowned upon.

    • Maybe I should start at thread, "[AU] Can I order brekkie from the breakfast club because I feel like a nice yummy treat" ?
And then cover myself up with a fire retardant suit so i can read the replies.

      • Well done OP have you learned about something that is essential ?

Oh dear I'm getting all my quotes jumbled up. But yeah .. that one.

          • @FoxJump: You've been through the ringer here 🤣

How do you think you came about you muppet?

  • +4

Hahaha, 20 months into the pandemic and people still telling you it's too soon to engage incommerce with a fellow community member

What next, outlaw cash? "Muh vectors", or maybe you simply won't be allowed to sell things that you didn't purchase brand new yourself…

Wear a mask, buy the DVD, ask the dude to text you if he gets COVID. Police stop you? You did your part, you got the vax, you can't go to work and you got shit to do.

    • You also unnecessarily left your house…

Forgive me, I'm not in NSW but if it's like the lockdown here, McDonald's is still open right? Think about that, a health order that still allows people to go and indulge in food that burdens the health system but you can't go to a gym.

If the provision of fast food is deemed as essential, literally everything anyone needs to feel good is deemed as necessary.

        • i get that but its not really in the grand scheme of risk/harm minimisation.

As previously noted throughout, just because something hasn't been stated as essential doesn't mean that the loophole is to be exploited.
But i feel you're only as strong as you're weakest link, which in the case of NSW there seems to be a fair few of.

@Drakesy: Yeah… But it's like the whole water saving thing right? Governments telling us every drop counts, take shorter showers, etc (despite urban water usage making up like 7-11 percent of annual water consumption in Australia), and meanwhile MPs engage in corrupt conduct to bleed the Murray Darling dry.

How's this any different? "Stay at home, you're only essential if we say you are, it's only necessary if it's on the list. What's that, you're not going to work at McDonald's but are actually going to pick up a DVD for your kids? Nah sorry not essential take a fine."

The sooner this country's governments collapse, the better. Our constitution has already been undermined by the Fed.

Nothing against the people who wanna do the right thing…we need more of them, but don't invoke our government to define what right is.

            • @Assburg: Not sure why you're bringing water saving into this, that's a whole other ball game. But yes, Angus Taylor and his farming cronies are royally screwing Australia over with the Murray Darling.

The difference lies in the thought processes thinking that secondhand DVD purchases are essential when there's alternatives such as netflix, youtube, disney+ etc which are cheaper and offer greater choice all without the risk of going to another person's house.

Libraries are closed for a reason

  • Might be good to have a thread for 'what can I do in lockdown'

I legit want to know if I can leave LGA to get my car serviced (not dealership)
Been holding off for almost 2 months now as I only take it to a mechanic that's 35-40 mins away.

    • +1

Having learnt from my burns. The people here will tell you to service it at a closer place that is within your LGA or to diy or to just buy a new car with free delivery.

But … Good idea. Just call your local cop shop and ask

    • -1

with the amount of driving you are doing at the moment with current lock downs, i'm sure your car will survive another few months,

  • It's okay to buy it because puzzles are essential.
If puzzles are essential, everything that can entertain as much as a puzzle is essential.

  • -3

The first reply and your response just shows how pointless this whole thread is

I’d suggest not breeding but it’s too late for that as well

    • +2

      Thanks for being so frank

  • lol is this a serious q?

if so , call the covid hotline, if accepted, you get given a case number in case you get pulled over.

    • +1

Oh that is a top tip. It was a serious question.
but i called the LGA cops instead on their local phone number (not 000, not crimestoppers) and they provided advice. I did not know the covid hotline gave case numbers if they accepted a proposed scenario that was in the gray area. Fantastic to know.

nb: I have no gray area requests anymore.

      • I've always wanted twins. Maybe one day

        • I used to joke with the wife that we should aim for triplets.
          ..
and now, well, 2 our of 3 aint bad.

It's great fun, and tiredness, I recommend it.

      • +1

Thats funny , because some police stations explicitly don't give advice as the rules can change suddenly.
They tell you to call the national covid hotline!

But yeh , I got a case number for a time when I had to go pick up my dog from a mates place and it was grey area rules.

My kids need cars and DVD to remain entertained

That says it all really. Jesus H. Christ.

  • -1

Why not think for yourself and do what you think is right?

  • Get Disney+, it has plenty of kids movies, and since it has the Cars movies you are kind of killing 2 birds with 1 stone

    • +1

Honestly, less digital time please. Kids are already overexposed to screens…

  • so the actual question you're asking here is nothing to do with personal safety but is in fact "how much danger am i in of getting caught and having to talk my way out of a fine?", in which case is "probably a lot of danger", because you may just get unlucky and get pulled over by the cops, or you may rock up to this person's house and find out they have snitchy neighbours who dob you in to the cops.

Here's what I'd do: Exactly your suggestion. Pay online, and when tell them when you're gonna pick them up. When you get to the end of their street, get them to leave it in one of those green shopping bags at the end of their driveway and go back inside. Drive past their house, get a passenger to jump out, grab the bag, and jump back in. Don't stop for longer than 3 seconds, then drive off. If the cops pull you over, point to the bag and say "i've been at the supermarket" and you'll be on your way.

    • ooh. Passenger. Only one person per household per day may go out to do grocery shopping.
      *ping

but yeah something like that i was going to do. but now i wont.

      • Only one person per household per day may go out to do grocery shopping.

That doesn't stop anyone (as someone who lives in a LGA of concern who regularly sees adults shopping with other adults)

  • +2

Just pirate it. 0% risk of catching coronavirus.

    • You might get a computer virus instead, lol

Did you know today there are almost 8000 active COVID-19 cases in NSW community and it's now growing by over 600 cases a day! (https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/covid-19/Pages/stat…)

COVID-19 is spread by people moving around, so please stay at home and get vaccinated when you can (https://covid-vaccine.healthdirect.gov.au/eligibility?lang=e…)

You may be lucky and avoid being put on a ventilator if you get COVID but research is suggesting about
1 in 22 people who get COVID will suffer a long term debilitating condition called LONG COVID
    (https://theconversation.com/deciphering-the-symptoms-of-long…)

Delta is far more contagious than earlier COVID variants (https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/covid-b-1-617-2-delt…)

This is how quickly it is spreading and where it is found (https://www.nsw.gov.au/covid-19/find-the-facts-about-covid-1…)

Please stay at home and get vaccinated as soon as you can (https://www.sydney.edu.au/marie-bashir-institute/news-and-ev…).

  • Just picked up a Kallax contactless yesterday on the next street a couple of hundred metres down, which happened to be on Marketplace. I need a couple of dowels to finish an existing different Kallax and when lockdown ends and I go past Ikea I can pick up some spare ones for this one, which will go in the garage as shelving. Saves having an uncompleted project lying around for months (annoying when I walk past) and much safer than C&C at Ikea.
