How to Sell My Old iPhone?

Hi All,

I'm currently looking to sell my old iPhone. The issue is that I'm located in greater sydney with strict lockdown rules. I believe the following options are possible:

  1. Sell on eBay = Will get the most money, but will have to pay fees and shipping. Also, I'm worried about scams and all the horror stories!

  2. Sell on Gumtree/Facebook = non-essential so might get fined? Not too keen selling at my house either.

  3. Sell to online phone buyers (e.g. mobilemonster) although will be $300 less than market price!

  4. HODL until lockdown is finished (could be next year and the new iphone will be out). The market value will definitely take a hit though.

Are there any other options? What should I do?

  • Seems like you've listed out a lot of options, which one do you prefer?

    • Seeking option 5.

There is a classified section on OZbargain, if you want to sell, otherwise I dont think its best platform for asking selling advice.

    • Will get a lower price than eBay, probably similar to FB/Gumtree but probably less likely to get scammed for posting it.

  • 1 or 2. Latter of which they may be within a proximity that's allowed, plus they're coming to you nor vice versa. eBay is a great platform even with the fees, I always get much better offers and transactions that way than any other (gumtree/marketplace).

  • I would say Gumtree but you are in Sydney which is kind of tricky situation.

As long as they are in a 10km radius (the buyer and seller can meet in the middle of their 5km leash zone)then the op shouldn't get hassled by the gestapo…you'd think, but no guarantees these days.

I guess it explains the number of cases in Sydney if Gladys's "everyone understands the rules" and "you must stay home" is taken by the population to mean that they are allowed to go meet strangers in public to sell their old iPhones.

Don't sell it in person. Not only are you potentially contributing towards more COVID cases, but also risking a massive fine.
Don't hold, price will go down.
    Go for eBay

Take the relatively low risk and sell on Gumtree? Use PayPal, send the phone after you receive the money. After that phone leaves your hands, you're no longer responsible for what happens to it.

Too risky both covid, lockdown rules and fraud

  • GUMTREE CASH ONLY

  • Whats the rush?

  • If no rush and you can wait till the lockdown ends (Jan 2022 perhaps?) then do it via fb marketplace/gumtree then. Otherwise, option 3.

Either 3 or 4; Don't risk getting fined, otherwise the money you get from selling this phone will just go to the fine you have to pay for non-essential travel.

mobilemuster.. save the pain you go through with all the sh*tkickers on gumtree/fb/ebay

  • I would do 3. Better to get less money but guaranteed money. Ebay is risky. You may end up the the same or less by waiting for lockdown to be over to do it in person.

  • eBay seems the best option

  • I get 2x fee free eBay listings a month if I make a Gumtree ad and share it on eBay (provides the option after posting the ad). Do you?

    • Second this. Only need to pay 30c so that's the best option atm.

Simple ebay then post it with tracking don't have to go meet anyone

    • Use express post. Record your imei.

  • Facebook marketplace, so you can get asked for "last price" by endless numpties and lose the will to live.

  • I sold all my old iPhones & iPad via eBay without any issues.

I took efforts in cleaning up (physically), reset to factory default and post images with enough details that buyers are interested in. As well as clear description about physical wear & tear on the unit.

  • Here’s my experience -

    1) eBay - bid auction - get the maximum but be ready to pay crazy ebay fees. If sending by ebay - send using registered post using parcel box with signature and if possible get the insurance as well.

    2) Gumtree/Facebook - i wouldn’t recommend. Even for cash on pick up. You don’t know who you are meeting and may get robbed. (I have had horrible experience. Lesson learnt)

    3) MobileMonster - safest bet but less $$.

    4) HODL - I am late in responding as iPhone 13 is already out for pre orders.

My suggestion - go with ebay or mobile monster.
