My Missus Needs a Laptop - Budget $1000

Hi people, my girlfriend needs a laptop for an online course that her work laptop has locked her out of.

I know a little about them (mostly from reading you guys discuss them) she wants to just buy something from Dell but I want a bargain and something that will play indie games on Steam/Epic stores as I have loads of free games on epic but I have never owned a gaming computer.

So these are the minimum spec the program she needs to run.

Windows® (64-bits)
Minimal: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo or AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 (Intel Core i5 suggested), 4 GB of RAM (8 GB suggested). Windows® 7 or later. 3 GB of hard drive space.
Requires an ASIO compatible sound card.
Requires an OpenGL 2 compatible graphics adapter.
Supported Plug-in formats (64-bit): VST 2, VST 3, AAX.

And she wouldn't mind a touch screen. All I need is it can run indie games. We have a budget of around $1000.

Cheers for any help given.

Budget would help? No sense suggesting a $2,500 gaming laptop if you only want to spend $1,200…

    • Around $1000 thanks for reminding me.

Try to get this if you can. slim stylish, really good screen, good enough for indie games.

Her work laptop is lower than a core 2 duo?!

    Srsly?

Do you really need a laptop?

No it's a really high spect surface pro. But she work for the government and they are slowly locking her out of programs and apps. Mostly all the personal life stuff she can't even use Spotify anymore.

    • And a laptop would mean I could drag it up stairs and HDMI it to my gaming set-up which is were my PS5 Xbox and switch are.

Could do the same with a slim tower pc 😉

        • The boss has spoken she wants a laptop.. but O might just get the Tower anyway. Any idea what sort of games it would be able to run I really want to give the game raft a go?

          • @Pavvvman: She wants a Dell laptop that you can use to play indie games. Yeah?

An Inspiron which has a Core i5, or an AMD Ryzen processor with at least 8GB of ram and an SSD harddrive will do the trick I reckon

            • @avoidfullprice: Cheers mate will look into it. Do I need a graphics card?

              • @Pavvvman: The processor had integrated graphics for what you needed. I find dedicated mobile graphics offer only marginally better performance in certain games.

Can you please clarify, is she your 1) Missus; 2) Girlfriend or 3) The Boss (as per your comment just above)?

I'd just get a MacBook Air M1 for $1300. Best value $1300 laptop I've used. I'm not even an Apple fan, don't own any other Apple products, but the M1 Macbooks are genuinely that good.

This was on sale for $800 a couple of weeks ago, maybe keep an eye on it as it seems to go periodically back to that price.(https://au.camelcamelcamel.com/product/B08RX1L9WL) That would be a total bargain, really impressive specs for less than $1000 (not touch though)

  • Not a popular opinion, but jump on gumtree, search for thinkpad T/X/L series laptops, get something recent (T480/T490/T14), just looking around my area I can find a few of those for under $1000.
These will last you a long time and are very well built. Look for something that still has a bit of warranty left for extra piece of mind.

  • I got Lenovo Flex 5 15 ( Ryzen 7 5700U) 16 GB for around $1050. It's 2 in 1 it's good for college/uni.
