Redmi Note 8 Pro and 9 Pro on BOOST Not Connecting or Dropping Calls

I have two redmi phones (both global editions) that were on telechoice. Things have been fine, but in recent months we were finding at home (inner suburbs of Melb) that most of the time during the day we were unable to make calls or could only make calls after 5+ attempts, did not receive calls (straight to message bank), and would drop calls regularly.

I tried to see if there was any network issue with Telechoice and it all looked fine. They did some network reconnection with my number, and there was no improvement.

I shifted to Boost thinking that their wider coverage would help, but it appears not to have.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice. Should activating VoLTE improve things?

  • I have a Redmi Note 9 Pro connected with Aldi (Telstra) in Brisbane with no problems at all . I bought this phone via Amazon UK , uses MIUI Global 12.01 & Android 11 with Security update 2021-05-01 .

    • thanks

phones were working relatively well up until about 3 or so months ago. When we are out they seem fine, but at home we seem in a bit of a hole reception-wise.

There is the answer to your problem right there.
If the phones work perfect away from home then the phones are fine.
There must be something new in your area emitting a signal that interferes with your calls.
We use RN9S's here (2) and tried most of the telcos with no problem at all.
Next time you get a visitor ask them to try their phone.

        • We're in melbourne! It feels like we're never having visitors again….but a handy suggestion.

  • Not sure, but when was the last time you rebooted your phone?

    • rebooted when we changed providers (which was 2 weeks ago), and several times in the last week.

I bought a poco phone and had difficulties because of the heavy reliance on volte and the 4g network. This had to be enabled on the phone to make it work. The phoned don't come with it enabled by default. I had to also enable voice over wifi before it would allow me to switch volte on. I will find a link to the thread.

Have.a read here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/569564 many Poco phones are likely rebadged Redmi notes. It may help.

  • Is there a chance that this is abnormal congestion on the network due to lockdowns in your area and your calls are getting queued till access is available?

    • There is this possibility I suppose. But when incoming calls are not even ringing through, or on some cases it takes 10 attempts to make an outgoing call, it isn't sustainable
