Asked Computer Alliance on eBay if GPU Was Non LHR - The Price Then Jumps by $300

Saw this pretty cool Asus 3080 Gundam edition on Computer Alliance yesterday for $2699 ($2565 after eBay plus 5% off)

Thought I'd ask if it was non LHR since it wasn't mentioned and figure it affects the resale value down the road. After I get a response the price jumps up $300 to $2999 even though purchase history doesn't show any sales yesterday.

Not going to buy it now, just thought it was funny.

    3080 gundam is not LHR.

Buy off ebay is cheaper. Scorptec is around $2600-2700

  • If you're still keen on buying it at $2699, reply to their message asking to buy it at the original price. If you've picked up on a mistake, they may be happy to help you out - you could add it to cart and request a total, I think they can discount it that way just for you.

I replied asking why it went up, waiting for a response to that first.

their prices fluctuate quite a bit, if you still want it at that price jump onto the website & hit chat and say you missed the sale on ebay can they do the same price (worth a shot)
however, you can get 3080s listed on this site for like a grand less, save yourself the grand and buy some stickers and put on it if your buying just for appearance

It wasn't on sale that was just the price, tbh the reply put me off a bit since it seemed a tiny bit rude which is why i didn't check the price again till this morning. I'm not a miner myself but i have friends who are and i don't have any issue with people that choose to mine. Below is the reply i got when i asked if it was non-LHR.

      Hi,

Unsure. Won't matter if you are using the card for it's intended purpose though.

Remember they are not designed or recommended for crypto mining, hence the deterrent measures that Nvidia are taking.

      Regards,
      James

        LOL at that passive-aggressive reply.
Funny they act like they're anti-mining and uncaring if it's LHR or not yet they jack the price as if they know they can get more money because it's non-LHR

James always comes across like he hates his job there - which is crazy because he’s been there for forever and a half.

      • +5

Wow James seems like a dick.

They probably forgot to price jack it for the 5% off Plus Members voucher.

Remember when Computer Alliance was an ozbargain favourite?
"No Computer Alliance, no deal", "CA don't price jack". Sad to see they're no different to all the other price-jack tech sellers on eBay now

    • +1

Except they always did price jack and the mob just downvoted you for pointing it out.

      • They didn't for a while. That or it was infrequent/not apparent.
When they started, lots of ozbargainers denied it and came up with reasons like it was just normal price adjustment.
I guess they just hoped and really wanted to have a decent store that stood above the rest

I built my PC last year with 20% off ebay codes and and most of it came from CA because they had not price jacked.

        • Yep, I did mine this year too (and a mate who bought the exact same parts), picking up a 10850k, 32gigs and a itx z490 for peanuts to what I was originally planning to spend.

Why would anyone pay either of those prices for a 3080 when places are starting to stock them now.

Even at $1800 they are overpriced

    • It's a collectors edition Gundam version so looked pretty cool. If it had been Voltron instead of Gundam i would have for sure snapped it up without asking anything more lol.

      • +2

For that money i would just modify a standard 3080 to look the same.

Regardless of collectors or not its price will plummet when the next gen arrives as all tech does.

The sooner 3080s are closer to $1000 the better

        • Wouldn't surprise me if this one went up in value if you kept it boxed, combination of limited supply and much of that supply being bought up by miners would make a good condition one pretty rare in future. That said theres so much Gundam branded stuff out there that who knows.

@Dowhatuwant: Can you point to any GPUs, from say, 10 years ago that are collectible?

I want to believe but almost no tech actually becomes collectible.

          • @Dowhatuwant:

Where do you get the idea that this is rare from? Every single retailer has this available right now. The only ones saying that it's "limited edition" is ASUS, but they have a bit of a vested interest in this don't they?

I don't see any case for this going up in future. 99%+ of technology goes down in worth over time. In general, scarcity alone is not enough for something to become collectible / rare / expensive, it's a combination of:

            1) Was once common, but is now rare - this is the "nostalgia" effect. Examples of this are things like Pokemon cards.

            2) It is the "last piece of the puzzle" - example of this is ClayFighter Director's Cut on the N64. Most N64 games are quite common, except for this particular one, so it becomes a very expensive "last piece of the puzzle" for people going after complete collections.

The nostalgia effect is quite important. Unfortunately, I just don't see Gundam as something that the world will start going crazy over 20 years from now.

This card has none of those characteristics. FWIW, I think it's a nice looking 3080 and it'd look great in my system. However, if you wanted an investment, I wouldn't put my money in this.

      • if it had a pink hat i would have paid 10k for it!

It's a collectors edition Gundam version

I genuinely hate how everything is now a "collector's edition" - how many of you "it's a Gundam version, so cool" people even gave a flying kahoot about Gundam or have any interest in the actual franchise?

        • I didn't even know what Gundam was lol. Similar with game consoles, so many limited edition designs. I understand it a bit with portable consoles. It's sometimes cool to carry around a special design but home consoles not so much. Even less with a PC component lol

Capitol Computer in Sydney has it for $2499 + shipping if interested. Not best value by far, but Gundam edition looks cool. Not affiliated.

  • Should have just bought it and paid via paypal.
You can always return the item for free vai paypal anyway

    • It would be better to find out prior to purchasing even if they have a generous return policy.
That way you don't waste both your's and the store's time and effort in packing and posting.
You normally wouldn't expect a store to suddenly jack the price up and by the fact that they do, maybe consider not supporting the business

  • For that price (full or discounted) I would want my 3080 to come with a waterblock.

    • I only run GPU's on water, todays prices shock me as I got
my brand new gtx1080 for $600 when it was current generation,
then I got lucky and got both EK waterblock and backplate brand
new for $70, so $670 for brand new gtx 1080 watercooled, todays
prices shock the living daylights out of me.
