it's a pretty good price, but this gun is quite weak even after modifying it. The front gun is even more of a failure, better off getting two mavericks instead if you want 2 guns.

    • What do you mean by quite weak? Is it because it doesn't shoot the darts to 200ft? Well not many toy guns do that kind of range.

I modified mine by removing the air restrictor, glued the air hole, reinforced the bolt sled and swapping the stock spring with a stronger spring. The range increased from stock 30ft to 70ft.

      • And who said Macguiver didn't exist anymore?

      • well if you are going to replace the spring and reinforce the bolt sled, these will have additional costs.

        • True, but some people are crazy enough to spend $200+ on a complete overhaul kit for the Longshot's internals, see here: http://www.nerfmodsreviews.com/2012/02/xplorer-xpower-kit-re…

Modification generally involves some extra outlay, it doesn't always have to eclipse the initial blaster price. You're the one who claimed "quite weak even after modifying it" which is just plain wrong. I'm sorry I'm not trying to be argumentative, just don't like to see misinformation spread.

        • I agree, it will depend on how much it is modified. However, I am certain if it is just the air restrictor removal, even the nitefinder can shoot further than the longshot after this modification. If you want to be so pedantic about it, you could just install a real gun inside if you really really wanted to, but lets keep it simple.

        • If AR removal is the extent of your modding capabilities, then yes the Nitefinder will out perform the Longshot. I would argue that AR removal, spring replacement & bolt sled reinforcement would be considered "keeping it simple", anything less and we may as well compare stock vs. stock.

Summation for anyone still on the fence: don't let any of these comments put you off. For $30, just buy one! They're huge, they look awesome, heaps of potential, you can't go wrong.

while we are at it. a quick tip if you do want to mod it. Do not attach the bolt until you have done your modifications. Not that you can't get it off later, but it is a real pain in the ass to do it.

I'm sorry but your comment couldn't be any further from the truth. The Longshot is one of the most powerful blasters after modifications due to it's plunger design and is highly sought after by those who know what they're doing.

Anyone curious about mods should start reading the forums at OzNerf and NerfHaven.

OK, the front gun is junk, I'll give you that.

    • LOL, if air restrictor removal is the only mod you are going to attempt, then don't bother. Most newer NERF guns are of reverse plunger design now and removal of air restrictor does not add significant improvement to the firing range. Stick to stock guns and their pathetic 30ft range :)

    • Longshot is one of the best Nerf branded Spring guns to upgrade to achieve greatest gains. Mine shoots 130 feet with Air restrictor removal/Upgraded spring/reinforced bolt sled and a brass breach - Costed all up about $70 (including price of longshot)

This is why I purchased 4 more :)

      • Where do you purchase the upgrade parts? Any instruction? Be nice to do this together with my son.

        • donkey kong search up an eBay seller called oznerfnerd. he sells upgrade kits for the longshots. But depends how old ur son is or how strong he is because the upgrade spring he sells is about 6x stock strength. it takes most adults two hands to prime, pulling the blaster towards their chest :p

In sayin that, you can also find 2.5x stock springs on eBay, it's the padding and the reinforecement brackets for the boltsled you should get off nerfnerd as they are a crucial part of preserving your blaster post modification.

  • is this in-store too?

    • i checked in store in WA…online only it seems

  • Sigh, after buying a nerf vulcan last time they were on sale I've become very disappointed in nerf guns. No range, power etc, have to arc your shot to get any distance (maybe just the vulcan model). Might look into making my own instead…(can only end in tears)

    • They also have a Barricade RV-10 for $17.30.

      http://www.bigw.com.au/big-deals/bpnBIGW_0000000259895/nerf-…

Asking the NERFaholics out there. Out of the three (Longshot $30, Deploy CS-6 $20, and Barricade RV-10 $17.30) which one would you buy and why? I already own a Maveric, something with batteries would be nice. I wish the Stampede was on sale.

      • well the barricade has the batteries, although the motor makes a bit of noise. Only thing to note is the stampede, like the vulcan uses 6 x D sized batteries and if you forget and leave it in the on mode, the batteries drain away.

      • My vote goes th the CS-6, the RV10 will only fire as fast as the motor allows it and reload times will be slow. The RV-6 is pump action(?) so can fire nearly as fast as you can pump, plus clip loading for fast reload

      • The Longshot is easily better than the other two, at $30 it's a steal. Also recommend the Recon if you can find a cheap deal ($20ish). All Nerf need modding to be truly impressive.

The newly released Rayven is quite good, it uses two spinning wheels to launch the darts like those tennis/soccer ball practise machines. To improve it's performance you just add more voltage with better batteries (14500 Lithium-Ion Trustfires). Looks awesome too.

        • Change the battery type (voltage) is that what you mean by modding?

        • donkeykong: it's one of the ways. Depends what mechanism the blaster uses to launch the darts: could be compressed air stored in bladders, plungers & springs or flywheels & motors. Each can be modified in different ways to get better performance.

(I can't seem to reply to your comment, maybe I'm doing it wrong.)

As yamumma has mentioned, different Nerf blasters can be modded in different ways. There's a whole Nerf modding culture out there. YouTube has a tonne of tutorials. I modded my Maverick by cutting out some of the unnecessary air restrictors and modding the rotating barrel to drop out all the way to allow for quicker reloads.

By the way ozbargain must have a limited depth for replies since I can't reply to donkeykongs question either.

The Deploy is horrible and so is the Vulcan.

Bought one for my son. If he is doing well with his study he will get this surprise :)

    • So will you when he figures out how funny it is to ambush people with one of these.

and if he is failing, it's yours to shoot him with.

I will line him up against the wall.

I've been waiting for a deal on this, not the best NERF but it's one of the coolest looking.

      • No way is the Recon the best. Maybe after modding, but even then… I would easily say that the recon is in the bottom half of Nerf guns ever.

        • -3

Recon is a great gun. Awesome power/range on those things.

Whats real pimp looking also, is the Longshot, with the Recon barrel on it. Looks sweet as.

        • -3

Recon? Great? It sux. The only mod I have seen to make it great is to replace the entire internal parts with an air-pump parts from Buzz Bee gun.

      • Depends what you are after.

Personally I'd say the Stampede is the 'best' after modding, it has an incredible fire-rate and range, and it takes large capacity clips very well. (Give it a drum mag!)

However it is large and cumbersome, the recon is the smallest gun that takes a mag.

    Good grief!

Didn't realise there was such a hardcore Nerf community out there.

Considering airsoft is illegal to possess without a gun licence (in AU), many Australians have taken to NERF instead.

I enjoy modding them, even if the end result isn't practical in any way. (Good for indoor NERF warfare.)
