  • Dram would be good

    • +1

in a real world scenario how much of a difference would it make?

    • +2

what does dram do, how much of a difference does it make? Why should I want it and at what cost?

      • +6

In short, DRAM is memory, just like the other memory chips on the SSD. The other memory chips on your SSD store data, the DRAM is not there to save information. It's there to be able to quickly look up where exactly data would be on the drive, so it can be found much quicker.

In a real world scenario the average joe wouldn't notice the difference.

      • In the context of games and data analysis, you’ll load into a game a tiny bit slower. Maybe if it takes someone else with dram 10 seconds, while it’ll take you 11-12 seconds. It’s more relevant in terms of professional usage, in data analysis with large data sets it’ll allow you to edit the data faster (if you’re creating/editing new variables, bootstrapping…).
The other benefit is that it’ll increase the lifespan of your ssd particularly if you’re constantly writing data.

Hopefully someone with more brains than I can help out:

Running a B450M Mortar Max. Already have a Crucial P1 SSD in M.2_1 slot, keen on picking the Kingston up as it has a secondary M.2 slot but the manual reads:

PCI_E4 slot will be unavailable when an M.2 SSD is installed in the M2_2 slot.>

Is this a problem? I'm not actually sure I have anything in that PCI slot. Much confuse.

    • +1

should be fine unless you've got a wifi card or something in that slot

      • -1

Thanks for the reply (and to everyone below) still a bit confused by it all, but purchased one anyway to see how we go. My GPU wouldn't be in the PCI_E4 slot would it? I'm away at the moment and can't check unfortunately.

    • +4

That's because they share the same PCIE lane. If you don't have anything in that slot then it's fine. Also, the second m2 slot runs at PCIE x2 from memory (I had a B450M Mortar Titanium which should be same as Max).

      • +1

So I had to go into the B450 Mortar Max manul to check this….

Second M.2 slot is off the B450 chip, providing a PCIe 2.0 x 4 = 2GB/s, which is slightly slower than the transfer rate supposedly offered by this SSD.

Not that most users (e.g. office, gaming, surfing web) would notice the difference.

        • Would it be better for the OP to just use a 2.5 inch SATA SSD instead? Would that provide better speed?

          • @donkey33: 2.5" ssd's are max like 550MB/s speeds so this kingston nv1 will be faster as it'll hit 2000MB/s limit

    • Two things on B450 Mortar / Mortar Max:

      • As with every B450, the second M.2 slot is PCIe gen 2 x4 only. So in a way, a low end M.2 PCIe gen 3 x4 SSD kind of make sense (since you are not going to be able to reach PCIe gen 3 x4 speed on that slot). That said, realistically, random read/write speed matters more in day to day usage.
      • The second M.2 slot is sharing / using the bandwidth from PCIe x4 slot, so you cannot use both at the same time, only one can be used. Furthermore, it is the same for the PCIe x1 slots. Even though there are 2 slots on the motherboard, you can only use 1 of them.

    I'm waiting for a 4tb ssd to go lower than 300$ 😬

    • +1

That would be great, but I haven't seen any SATA format SSD fall below $100 per 1tb, even at 2tb, let alone M.2 PCIe Gen3 or Gen4. To get down to $75 per 1tb is unheard of recently.
Most manufacturers also charge a "premium" (in terms of dollars per gigabyte) for drives with larger internal space - sweet spot is either 500gb, 1tb or 2tb depending on the deal. I still haven't seen any 4tb drive offered for less than 2x 2tb drives of the same brand.

    • Maybe after the GPU prices come down to MSRP first…

  • CPU and mobo doesn't seem like much of a deal. I got both individually during the last 12 months for $300 total ($240+$60)

    • +1

Ryzen 3600's have risen in price since then unfortunately

      • +3

        "Ryzen" in price

    • CPU is tray version. Does that mean it doesn't include stock fan?

      • +1

Correct, no stock fan on this one

  • TLC or QLC?

    • +1

qlc on this one. the a2000 uses tlc iirc.

    • -4

      TLC,
      Creep
So I creep, oh ah, oh ah, oh ah yeah
So I creep, oh ah, oh ah, oh ah yeah
So I creep, oh ah, oh ah, oh ah yeah
Baby, oh ah, oh ah, oh ah yeah
So I creep, yeah, just creepin' on,
      But I'll know.
So I creep, yeah, 'cause he doesn't know what I do,
And no attention goes to show.
So I creep, yeah, just creepin' on,
      But I'll know.
So I creep, yeah, 'cause he doesn't know what I do,
So I creep, 'cept nobody is supposed to know.

  • Will this work with this? (Mini Pcie mSATA Adapter SSD To 2.5 inch SATA3 Adapter Card With Case SATA)

    • post a link?

    • No. Not only this SSD is not SATA3 (it's NVMe), it is m.2, not mSATA. It's hard to find bargain mSATA SSDs nowadays.

      • Can just shuck a Samsung T5, which is still around.

        • Isn't that going backwards? While T5 is not NVMe, at least the USB chipset is USB 3.1 gen 2. Most el cheapo no name brand adapters are most likely USB 3.0/3.1 gen 1.

          • @netsurfer: It was to convert mSATA to a 2.5 inch SATA drive (not usb), the performance loss is minimal if not nil in that case. Not too sure why they want to use it this way though…

  • +1

I need another pccg deal for the pny cs3040 2tb for $300. That deal was great

    • It was $300 + shipping ($15?). At the moment, PCCG basically makes you choose express shipping (since it is the same price as non-express). I understand why PCCG does it: with the lockdown, if express is not used, there will be a lot of extra delay.

That was a good deal, but still need to wait till Sony enabled the official (non-beta) version of the PS5 firmware. PCIe gen4 SSDs are overkill for most people. We will also have PICe gen5 SSDs next year so I wouldn't stock up on PCIe gen4 SSDs at the moment.

      • +1

Correct, perhaps I should have written $315. I get it would be cheaper when gen5 comes but for now it's one of the better deals that we have had in relation to cost per storage, space and speed

      • +1

Not every nvme is for ps5…

Just a 2tb nvme at that price is good for pc.

  • Does this need a heatsink if i put it in a enclosure?

  • sata m.2 would be nice

  • Would this work in a PS5?

    • +1

      PS5 SSD requirements
Format PCIe Gen 4.0 (x4) M.2 NVMe SSD
      Capacity 250GB, 500GB, 1Tb, 2TB or 4TB
      Read Speed 5500MB/s or faster
      Total size with heatsink 110 x 25 x 11.25 millimetres
      Form factor 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110
      Heatsink Required

      nope!

    • No - if you want to put it in the m.2 slot within PS5.

You could use it via USB port, but that's what you are after.

  • what would be the best choice for game storerage drive nowadays? say for steam library. 2T would be nice, need to be M.2 sata/nvme.

    • +1

For you to store and load games, whichever cheapest SSD you can get will do.
For just storing games and not playing them, hard drives with spindle disc are better value.

  • +1

one day we will look back at these with our 8tb ssds and laugh at how ridiculous 1tb was.

    • Already looking back at the the first hard drive with only 20 megabytes I bought and laughing.

      • Same here, 20MB. And it cost $1000.

  • Can someone help me? I have H170 pro gaming motherboard with 1 ssd and 2 HDDs. Will this be compatible with my motherboard?

    • Yes, it will be… you have one "Storage interface 1×M.2 interface" so it should work!

    • From the manual:
      https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1151/H170_PRO_GAMIN…

Page 1-18 shows the M2 socket 3 position. Check to see if that slot is currently being used. If not, then you can use this NVMe SSD on that slot. If it is already being used, then you need to decide whether you want to replace it with this.

While you could use CrystalDiskInfo to check the mode your current SSD is operating at (PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA/600), the fact that m.2 slot does permit/support SATA3 as well as PCIe 3.0 x4 means even seeing SATA/600 in CystalDiskInfo is not a 100% safe bet that the m.2 slot hasn't been used.

If you let us know the name of the SSD reported by CrystalDiskInfo, people here might be able to help (assuming it is one of the models that doesn't have m.2/SATA3 version).

    • Interesting. I also have this MB & only 1 (slower) SanDisk Ultra II 1TB as SATA/600.
Is this M.2 the best choice to bring more life to the old MB?

  • Will a PCIe 3.0 nvme drive work in a 2.0 slot???
    Or could there be issues?

    • Might need to flash BIOs but should work. If you using for shortage only should be fine but as a boot, it will not take advantage of anything.

  • Kingston NV1 still showing $134

    • +3

Add to your cart and it will show $120 plus 1.2% surcharge. $121.20 final price

      • ahh thanks

      • surcharge for what?

        • For using credit card. I used paypal linked to credit card so it still charged me surcharge.

  • Bought one Kingston NV1, Thanks for sharing.

  • NV1 showing as not in stock when added to cart.

    • Only 50 units were available and it was 1-hour deal.

    • Do you want mine for $121? I haven't received but otherwise I will be returning it to SE once received. I purchased a WD SN750 instead.

  • Got one
