Is $5750 a Good Price for a 10kw Solar System? (Melbourne)

Hi, I've received a quote for a solar system as follows:
10.36kw
Double storey
28x 370w Canadian solar HiKu black frame
Growatt 8kw

For $5750 after rebates (includes 1400 loan)
and was wondering if this is a good price.
Thanks

How long it takes to break even?

    • +1

Around 4-5 years based on my current consumption, I am actually getting a larger system after initially wanting a 6.6kw because of future plans.

      • -3

Aren't they removing feed-in tariffs? If so then you'll basically never get ROI.

        • +3

Less ROI, not none. Self consumption provides savings too.

        • +3

Use the excess power to run a mining rig and make money that way if feed-in tariffs disappear.

    • +2

Their quote does say 2-3 years but that’s at 70% self consumption.

      • Thanks. I mean 4-5 year timeframe is still good price for the system..

Also 70% self consumption in estimate makes me feel uneasy about this salesperson, despite them on solarquotes. I have a smaller than half of your system size, and shifted my usage to during the day, and I could at most get 40-50% self consumption.

        • Yh, I agree that was the only thing making me a bit wary in their quote.

  • +1

Maybe? based off existing deals on here it sounds like good value for a 10kw system.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/648414 ($4,799 for 6.6kw)

Here in WA i forked out $2200 for a 6.6kw system after rebates. But i feel our rebate structure pays back a bit more.

    • Thanks for the response, Yh I was getting quoted around $3000 for a 6.6kw of the same panels and inverter as the 10kw one.

Hey mate, what installer are you using?

We got a quote for a 10.53kw system.

    27x JA Solar JAM60S20-390MR
    Goodwe Smart Meter (Single Phase)
    Goodwe GW8500-MS Inverter
    Clenergy Tile Roof Kit

    RRP was $12,742

    Gov rebate $1400
    Gov rebate loan $1400
    STC incentives - 124 STC @$35 $4340

    Total $5602

When you say yours is $5750.. are you saying its $5.75k + 1.4k loans? Or is the 1.4k loan inclusive of that 5.75k figure?

You should be getting several quotes

    Growatt 8kw

It is an 8kw system with 10kw of panels. Max output is 8kw. You are limited by your inverter.

They do 1.3x panels because panels don't produce maximum until about 2pm.

    Goodwe Smart Meter (Single Phase)

You better check the paperwork because most most distribution networks limit single phase export to 5kw per phase. 15kw export for 3 phase (if they allow it) and it has to be balanced.

Gross price is $800 - $1k per kilowatt (inverter installed).

Check out Solar Quotes webpage, believe they have a price tracker. here

My opinion you are ripped off by 2kw of inverter capacity and 3kw of panels, you are paying top price for budget items. 10KW explained

Respect your opinion but not necessary. oversizing explained. If OP has panels on different facing roof, it will not peak at 10kw generation anyways. Worst case is the output is clipped a bit in peak summer.

      • I find that voltage throttling on my grid hampers any possibility of reaching the maximum output. My system is a 6.6kw panel with a 5kw inverter. On a sunny day when the neighbourhood is in light the inverter would max out at ~4.4kw/h (yes it does go up to 5kw/h but very rarely).

My best day has actually been an overcast day with gaps of sunlight.

        • +1

There’s an optimum temp for solar panels. Full sunny summer day and they won’t be as efficient and full sun in winter due to being overtemp.

          • @Euphemistic: There is NO optimum temperature for solar panels-the colder the better!!

Also, the “efficiency” of solar panels at a given temperature does NOT depend on whether it’s sunny or cloudy or anything in between!!

            • @GOCAT9: It does come down to angle of the sun. Higher temps, less efficient. Winter sun won’t heat as much, but will be at a lower angle and may not be optimised for the panels.

Cloud obviously affects the output, less sun rays getting through to the panel.

My point, maybe not well expressed is that many thing affect how much power a panel puts out. ‘More sun’ may not be better.

OP is definitely not getting 10kw. The inverter is 8kw. OP is only getting 10kw of panels and yes you might be right that means OP is getting maybe 7kw output max but paying the price for proper 10kw system.

It is like claiming you are getting 250kph capable tyres but your speedo maxes out at 180kph and selling it as a 250kph car.

Installer should explain why OP won't get the output.

        • +1

OP is definitely not getting 10kw.

Did you read and understand the oversized system explained link from solar quote?

          • @avoidfullprice: Did you also not read in your link:

Your Inverter Determines The Maximum Panel Capacity

            • +2

@netjock: The panel only produce the rated power when the sun ray hits the panel perpendicularly. It happens roughly at noon.

Having a higher rated inverter would not generate more power at other time.

              • +1

                @avoidfullprice: Don't call it a 10kw system if it can't output 10kw

                • +3

@netjock: like my internet shouldn't be called 60Mbps when I never achieve that?

In Sydney, the lowest quotation for 13.3 KW I saw was -

    Capacity - 13.3 KW
    Inverter - 10 KW GoodWe
    Panels - Jinko 370
    Quotation - 4200 $

    • Sydney would get more STCs due to more sunlight. You're in a different zone. Still your price is more like it.

    • That sounds amazing, when did you see this?

  • +1

The quote seems too cheap. Make sure it's a reputable installer and not a cowboy. Good equipment installed poorly won't perform as well as mid range products installed well.

  • I received the quote from a company called energy saviours (they’re on solar quotes too)
The price listed is inclusive of loan.
    And rrp was $11,420

    Gov rebate $1400
    Gov rebate loan $1400
    STC incentives - 122 STC @$35 $4270

    Total exclusive of loan $4350

    • Same system spec?

i.e. same panel model, inverter model?

Edit: oh, that's the same quote as original post. My bad, thought you got a second quote.

I hate these posts where LAZY people get just one quote then post here and ask if its a good price.

    Seriously….
    Please everyone
FIRST go and get SEVERAL quotes done BEFORE coming to this forum

You will then have your BEST price and your answer so so wont have to waste everyone's time asking

    • I appreciate these posts. Now I have several quotes from everyone who actually made a contribution.

    • You are far too trustworthy of quotes - I get all the quotes and then STILL like to get community opinion. Asking for community opinion is an important part of the research process

At the risk of sounding like a shill for Solar Quotes, maybe try using their quote tool?
    https://www.solarquotes.com.au/

It seems the majority of their customers have had a positive experience:

I am definitely not associated with this company in any way.

Definitely use solar quotes. You want to understand what you need and avoid fly by night installers and crappy products.

  • I used Captain Green and I'm in Tasmania. I assume you have 3phase power to have an 8kwhr inverter. I have a 5kw inverter. if I had more panels on the roof I apparently needed a building inspection/permit, and 3 phase power, so that decided that for me.

It is saving me $2000 per year currently because I swapped gas heating to electrics (heatpump hot water) as well. With my pensioner concession I was still in credit after a full year with the 11c feed-in tariff. This year feed-in tarif has reduced a little… But I am super happy and impressed. It was funded by my COVID mortgage holiday!

PS I live in a modern home with 3 adults all washing and cooking separately. And in Tasmania with only western facing cells.i actually like the western facing as I can utilise the late afternoon sun much better than day time peaks!

  • How do you think you are going to recoup that amount whilst living in Melbourne?
