Thanks OP, been waiting for a good coffee deal where i don't have to purchase 1kg for good discount.

  • +1

Are these any good? I am after some strong flavour coffee. Any recommendation please?

    • interested as well. anyone tried them?

      • +4

I've tried their Sumatra and Enterprise blends. Have a flick through the different kinds, they have a scale on each product page for roast level, caffeine and body. I found Enterprise to be nice and strong.

      • +2

Good coffee. Shipping is very fast which is great for freshness.

Enterprise and Saratoga are strong and smooth if that's what you are after.

      • They're good. I've ordered 4 times. Always quick and fresh.

    • +1

These are good, the beans are always freshly roasted. Strong flavour are q bit vague, but if my assumption is correct go for thunderchild or if you want something balance between the acidity and not too bold get the enterprise.

    • Try the Saratoga blend. You won’t be disappointed.

  • +3

My current go to is their Enterprise blend. A strong but smooth profile. Can definitely recommend them. Super fast shipping, and beans are normally roast on the day of or day before they're shipped.

    • +5

Also a fan of the enterprise blend, goes great as an affogato with some connoisseur vanilla.

      • Yum haven't tried that. Tonight's dessert is sorted!

        • +1

Time for a trip to woolies on the way home for me…

  • +1

Have tried a few different beans from them and have settled for Enterprise. Beans are always fresh, delivered fast and of a great quality.

  • Thanks OP. Gonna give the decaf a shot.

    • +1

Same, have had their other blends, which were nice but trying to drink decaf now. Hope it's good! Do you have any decaf recommendations? Best I've had is Fiori, but the last batch I got was really crap. Guess it's not consistent :(

      • How did you go with the decaf? Any good?

  • How does this compare to brands like industry beans?

  • Airjo is great - I don't think I've ever waited more than 24h for a package to arrive (from Burleigh)

  • Been waiting for one of their deals! Perfect timing. Thanks OP!

  • Cheers. Have tried Sumatra and Saratoga. Ordered 1kg of Enterprise.

  • Damn it, ordered like two days ago for full price

    • +5

Their new packaging has QR code for 25% discount on next purchase. I had been waiting for this too and literally ordered this morning, but I won't fuss over 30% compared to 25% when it's coffee as good as this.

      • Awesome, good to know! Cheers.

      • Omg just realised this. I paid full price last 2 orders. Still worth it since it's such nice coffee

      • You've made my day!
I still have half a bag left but didn't want to miss out of the deal. Thanks!

  • Just grabbed a bag of colombia blend.
Love Colombian single origin beans normally.

  • I would jump on the deal if I didn't already order from sensory lab, i supposed to get it by Monday 4 weeks delivery 🤣🤣🤣

  • +3

I’m currently sipping their Thunderchild blend and dayum! It tastes like a Metallica concert! So good.

  • I've gone from almost always running low on beans to just finishing off my second 1kg Inglewood bag with the father's day beans on the way. Currently two 1kg packs of Airjo Sumatra on the bench that I've made a start on, now I've ordered 1kg of the Airjo Enterprise. Given prior experience it'll be here in a few minutes!

  • I ordered two weeks ago. Highly recommend Colombian and Sumatra. Will try the Enterprise soon.

  • Thanks OP!

Does anyone know how long you can store them for unopened ?

    • +4

Depends on how seriously you take your coffee haha.
      Most would say 4 weeks?

    • +2

Coffee is similar to tea, you can practically keep em for a very long time. I would say 2 weeks for best taste or if not air tight container in cool and dark place it will last 1 month, after that the taste will deteriorate in my opinion.

      • Best between 1 week and 1 month, agreed. Taste then rolls off until about 3 months. The fact that Colesworth dates their beans as best-before 1 year is a joke.

I break up my batch into little containers and freeze the ones I won't be drinking this week.

        • Can you elaborate how you do this? How small of the batches are you packing? (like, is it packed per dose) What containers? Do you thaw them overnight or you grind straight out of the freezer?

          • @sphinxy: Nothing too profound. I have a bunch of cheapass plastic containers from K-mart which have a slight vacuum seal so they're airtight and don't let moisture in.

I break them up to about 200g batches (2 coffees a day by 20g x 5 days) into each box and they go into the freezer. I defrost them when when I run out of the last batch. I don't grind frozen beans - I let them come up to temperature. Only takes half an hour or so.

I know some people use vacuum sealers, but that's a little too wasteful for me.

            • @Helmuth: Thanks for that. I had a quick search for Kmart vacuum containers but nothing really came back - would you have a link?
So once you've finished and ready to use more beans, you take a box and let them ease to room temp and use that for the next week. Is that right? Nothing special on how you'd store them for that week, just use the container?
Thanks for your patience and explaining, I've got 1kg coming and still have some to go, so wondering how best to store the beans to lock in the freshness

              • +6

@sphinxy: I made this comment before, but it may be worth repeating:

No need to unfreeze the coffee - it's actually best to use the beans from the freezer.

In terms of keeping the coffee fresh, either:

                1. When you get the coffee, open the bag and put the coffee in a few smaller vacuum sealed bags that will keep about a week's worth of coffee. When you need to use it, open the bag, get the coffee you need, vacuum seal again and back in the freezer.
                  or
                2. If you want greater consistency, look at some cheap small leak-proof containers that will accommodate a single dose of coffee. Weigh the indidual doses (this will give you the greater consistency), fill up the containers and keep the rest of the coffee in a vacuum sealed bag. Keep them all in the freezer. Every time you need a coffee, take a small container out of the freezer, get your coffee dose and drop it in your grinder. When you finish the containers, open the bigger vacuum bag, refill the containers and start again.

If you want to know how long your coffee will last frozen, use this frozen coffee storage calculator

                Enjoy!

              • +1

                @sphinxy: Seriously, they're nothing special. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/500ml-flip-lock-food-contai…
They don't really pull much of a vacuum; the serious coffee canisters do a better job. They move the seal a little bit so there's a bit of an air seal. There are a hundred and one ways to do this. The only real objective is to exclude moisture. You don't want your beans getting wet.

  • Thanks, I was after a place to get Decaf beans (Swiss water) online.

Does anyone know where AirJo is physically located? I couldn't find that detail on their website.

    • +1

      Burleigh

  • +1

AirJo are on the Gold Coast from memory. Very good blends.. I order them all the time. Sumatra is my #1 choice. Oh used to send a small box of jelly beans with each order too, that was very cute!

    • The jelly beans are out of this world

  • Yay I just bought the twilight blend.
    Loved the Sumatra

  • I’m fairly new to coffees, have been using nespresso pods for a while. With a 500gram bag (using a plunger) how many standard coffees would I get from it. Sorry if I sound a bit silly but it’s a genuine question. I think the plunger we recently got is 500ml.

    • +2

You should be dosing 65-70 g per litre, so figure 33 g per 500ml plunge. So that's 15 and a bit plunges.

      • Thank you!! Good to know :) now need to figure out which one is good since there are heaps of recommendations here!

        • +1

Do yourself a favour. Start with https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st571DYYTR8 and then do some experimenting

          • @Helmuth: Thanks for the link! Straight to the point video for a newbie like me!

            • @Baby Grogu: You're welcome. Although nowadays I only use my plunger for frothing milk. I have a Clever Dripper at home and an Aeropress at work. Have you got a good grinder?

              • @Helmuth: Yeah I’ve seen deals here lately on the aeropress etc but not sure where to start. I don’t actually have a grinder - is it best to grind coffee yourself instead of getting it pre-grind? I’ve seen some cheapish grinders today - do they do the job? Or would I need specific grinder for like plunger coffees etc? We our trying our first plunge tonight, so will let you know how it goes. Do you guys weigh your coffees when you make them? Sorry for the questions, complete newbie wanting to learn!

                • @Baby Grogu: Update: tried the plunger method - complete fail and I don’t know what I did wrong. I realised the plunger we got is a massive 1L one not 500ml as I thought it was. we only wanted to try a small cup first.
Around 17 grams of coffee and 250ml of water - it turned out like muddy water :( is it because it just doesn’t work with that small amount of coffee in a large plunger or my method is wrong? 😭

                • +1

@Baby Grogu: Never get pre-ground. Ground coffee goes off within a day, then you've just got stale coffee. Also, don't get a blade grinder as they just smash the crap out of your beans and you get all different sized chunks.

I've got a hand grinder at the moment - they're really affordable and takes about a minute to grind 20g. I like the Timemore C2 - https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&SearchText=time…. If you stay on the coffee path, you can go and spend real money on a good burr grinder with a motor with enough torque to grind fine.

Lots of good grinders can grind from French Press/Plunger (reasonably coarse) all the way to espresso, but the top high end espresso ones might not be able to grind coarse enough for plunger. As a hint, nothing sub $100 with an electric motor is going to beat a good burr type hand grinder.

As for the plunger - you can absolutely make good coffee with a plunger, so it's more than likely your technique. I do find that if you want a really clear cup, you're going to need a method with a paper filter (or an espresso machine). If you're using pre-ground coffee, they probably ground it too fine for a plunger anyway - plunger grind is coarse-medium. Fine ground coffee is going to go straight through a steel mesh plunger and into your cup, so that's probably what you experienced.

You don't have to spend lots of money for a good cup. Save the plunger for frothing milk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgIVfU0xBjA ) and look at other techniques - V60 type pour over brewing is $10 for a plastic funnel plus $4 for a box of paper filters. An immersion method (which I particularly like) is the Clever Dripper - $32 plus paper filters. An aeropress (a hybrid immersion/perculation method) brewer is $30-$40. All three of these methods give great results (and lots better than the plunger).

Also: your query about weighing. Yes, weigh everything. Your water, your beans, your ground coffee afterwards, then time the amount of time the water is in contact with the beans. Your objective is to get to repeatable good coffee and you don't get there by guess work. Once you've worked out a good method, stick with it.

                  • @Helmuth: Wow thank you so much for spending the time to write that. It’s actually really insightful. The grounds I got they said would be suitable for plunger coffee. I probably used the wrong analogy but mine kinda just tasted like coffee made with cold water. I’m not going to pretend I’m a coffee connoisseur (more of a coffee wannabe lol) considering we have only used nespresso and instant coffee at home but is plunger coffee completely different to like coffee outside? They suppose to look a bit more pale? I really need to do more research.

I noticed Airjo has whole beans + 7 different types grinds on offer - with aeropress is that more than a coarser or finer grind? And good to learn that pre-ground goes off quick - probably time to invest in a cheapish grinder to start with…once I understand what I’m doing 🙁

                    • @Baby Grogu: Plunger coffee is supposed to be strong, dark and flavourful. What method are you using, the Hoffman? You should be using hot water - 93-95 degrees, give it a stir and leave it for 8 minutes, breaking the crust at 4 minutes as he suggests. It's definitely not supposed to be weak.

Once you get a bit more experience you can taste for bitterness (grind too fine) or sourness (grind not fine enough or not enough time), but it sounds like you're not extracting enough. I'd be checking your water temperature first, and your time second. Immersion methods are much more forgiving than pourovers and espresso, so I'd try to get that right first.

                      • @Helmuth: Will give it another whirl today! Yeah I used the Hoffman method but maybe I didn’t stir is enough? Or at all. I was in the zone in trying to get it right lol and maybe I forgot a step. Will report back!

    • +4

      Agree w/ Helmuth spot on.

nespresso pods are about 7g of coffee ground per pod.

so 500g bag is about 71 pods but you'll probably lose some from spillage (not too much)

      this place is selling 500g bags at $17-22 (discounted price) => ~$3.4 - 4.4 per 100g

      pods sell for $3 to about $8 per sleeve of 10pods => ~$4.28 - 11.43 per 100g

so most expensive beans are about similar price with cheapest pods. quality of fresh beans are arguably much better than pods (personal preference, going instant is cheapest)

      two coffees are day is about 1kg a month of beans. (2x 17g/coffee x 30d = 1020g)

      • Thank you for doing the maths for me! I didn’t know nespresso pods had only that small amount of coffee in them. We recently tried nespresso compatible pods from a small local business, and he said it’s prob the best coffee he’s had - he said comparing to nespresso branded pods, you just can’t compare as you can really tell the difference between the “fresh stuff” and said it’s 100 times better than any nespresso pods he’s had and can’t wait to try some more “real coffee”.

I’m more of a tea drinker than coffee but I asked what’s the difference? Or what defines a good coffee and he pretty much said what you said can’t beat freshly ground beans!

  • Thanks OP. Grabbed a kilo of Thunderchild. Looking forward to it!

  • return customer and agree with all the +ve comments - good operators.. but would love the single origins ( eg sumatra) at the same price as the enterprise blends.. surely there is more labour involved in blending the beans.. anyway small gripe. good coffee..

    • +2

Single origin are better quality and cost more. Blends are usually cheapo coffee mixed in with good stuff.

  • ~$17 for 500g shipped I'll give it a shot. Cheers OP. I hope it becomes my new regular!

  • Ah of course this goes on sale….I got desperate and bought 1kg a couple of days ago at full price.

  • +1

Posted this on similar thread earlier, but I'll ask again to get more opinions!:

Breville Barista express users, what dose / weight / shot times are you guys preferring for each of the different beans from here?

  • Thanks, grabbed a bag of the Twilight blend, to try something new. Ordered their Enterprise blend them a few times before . Great coffee, delivered really quickly (SYD).

  • Am "sort" of a regular customer now.
Will only buy when 30% off, so thanks for this.
    I just ordered 1.5kg.

I like AirJo coffeee, keep experimenting with different types, so far my favourite is Sumatra

The bags are awesome, once opened, you can keep them as fresh as possible my resealing and expelling the air.
(AirJo - the bags are worth the extra expense)

  • thanks OP - airjo are a great outfit, consistent beans, quick delivery

what more can you ask for?

i've trialled their thunderchild, columbian, now giving their sumatran a shot (pun intended)

  • Which is best for a strong filter coffee?

    • +1

      Sumatra

      • Cheers!

        • In my opinion, these are the best choices

Sumatra = Manual Brew (Aeropress, French, V60, Drip)

          Enterprise = Espresso

  • amazing service these guys

  • I tried their twilight and didn't enjoy it.
    The Colombian is decent.
I still like little marionette more but it seems the Sumatra and enterprise get a lot of good rep.

  • +1

Polling OzBargainer's here to determine the favourite blend.

  • Just note that it can arrive very late. Mine still hasn't arrived and i ordered on Sunday. Might arrive next Monday. It won't be fresh coffee by then.

    • +1

Yes it will. You want to let it degas for at least four to seven days after roasting so it will be perfect to start using when you receive it.

  • Anyone recommend which of their blends play nicely when enjoyed black? I drink mainly as espresso, sometimes long blacks.

  • So far I've tried….
Sumatra - liked it a lot. Similar to Merlo Riviera
Enterprise - liked it but kind of sharper and not like that warm mellow cup.
    Twilight - Also really good.

I had to change my grind slightly and get each bean dialed in for best results as there really is a difference.

Last week, I ordered another bag of Twilight as once dialed in with the right grind and pressure the results were great and very similar to Sumatra, but it's the cheaper of the two. I think I got a better crema from Sumatra, but would have to order another bag to confirm that.
I'm going to have to change to 1/2 kg bags so I can try the others.

All deliveries have arrived the next day.

Merlo and Di Bella have lost my business - Airjo are great.

  • Oh man i missed out on this month special.

  • +1

I'm not sure about the express shipping, though…

My order was marked as sent pretty quickly on Sunday but, unless the auspost tracking isn't updating, it still doesn't look to be in Australia Post's hands - it's still showing as 'it's being prepared'.

    • Same here, my order is in “It’s being prepared” according to AusPost tracking from Friday :(

      • Has to be AusPost issue - just got an update that my package is on board for delivery (ie. getting it today)

        • Usually, 'it's being prepared' means it's not in the hands of Australia Post yet… but the parcel has been registered. Hopefully the tracking is just slow to update at the Aussie Post end, and things are moving along in the background.

I need the beans tomorrow or I'll be out of supply for the weekend and I'll need to purchase more from somewhere - emergency!

Surely this wasn't dispatched as 'express post', as advertised, though?

          • @fookos: Yeah agree, pretty disappointed with the "express postage" here. Mine was collected by Australia Post on Monday it appears and hasn't been updated since 3 days later.

          • @fookos: @fookos, mine was delivered by an express package
