What makes the backpack worth $220? The brand name?

    • +3

It seems to get rave reviews. I've been wanting to get a nice backpack and it pops up a lot on best backpack lists. Before I bite even at $120 or so I'd have to see one up close to see what the fuss is all about.

The quality of and the ingenuity (in terms of storage areas) of belroy are pretty good. I don’t have but I have checked out my friends one. A lot of extra storage areas and protection from dirt and liquid spillage.

out of stock now but I have exactly the same backpack in the op post.

I did buy it at full price - don't think it is worth $220, maybe closer to $150 - $160.

difference is in quality and build, I needed an everyday carry backpack which can fit my laptop, gym clothes and separate compartment for shoes.

more importantly I needed it to fit into a corporate office setting & be respectable enough to bring to client meetings - this backpack ticked all those boxes.

definitely could have bought something else cheaper, but it's not a good look when you're walking into a corporate boardroom with a duffle with giant nike plastered over it.

      • +1

Did you consider not bringing gym clothes into a corporate boardroom? Like leave them in a car boot?

        • +4

I’m presuming poster works in the city where their gym is located, and their car is nowhere near them when they go there.

          • -6

@kiriakoz: I'm presuming frequent visitors of corporate boardrooms and owners of $220 backpacks can afford parking in the city.

Full disclosure - I have $199 canvas Knomo backpack that I got for 1/4 of the price and it's absolutely not worth more than I paid for it.

            • @[Deactivated]: I don't know about parking in Brisbane, but day parking in the city in Sydney is ridiculously expensive if you aren't doing earlybird rates. I once paid $20 to park for an hour in a car park.

              • @kerfuffle: I"m in Melbourne and that seems right, depending on where you are it can be $26+.

Work has dedicated parking for my building, when not available I try to be considerate and park early bird or QV which is around $20.

However I've been caught for meetings say for two hours between 11 - 1pm and you pretty much have to cop the hourly rate as most street parking (if you can find one) is 1 hour.

        • Yeah as per below, if I am in the CBD I would like to have everything with me in one place.

I may end up several blocks from my carpark and navigating back and forth through a multi level to retrieve a pair of shits, tshirt and shoes is not worthwhile.

      • Thanks. Ending up picking one up on eBay this evening for $85 (as new).

You'll enjoy it, do yourself a favour and make a false floor in the laptop compartment.

e.g. I rolled up a fabric tote bag (or just a small towel will work too) and put it on the bottom to soften the drop when i put my laptop in.

The normal bottom of the bag is a bit thin and you can damage your device if the bag is on a hard surface as you drop it.

      • Huh interesting, I can get it for half price so maybe I should bite the bullet…

I have Bellroy 'Classic' backpack, it's a nice, well made piece of luggage. Decent volume, pockets are clever, very comfy padding and straps. Perfect city / office worker backpack in my opinion.

I bought it on sale for ~$100 IIRC. Not sure it's worth the full price, Bellroy is charging a lot of extra just for their brand.

shipping on all orders are charged a flat rate of AUD$7.50

    found this: https://bellroy.com/products/category/outlet

agree with ozbs25, best to check out in person to see if style and size suits. otherwise be prepared to return/gift to somebody else

their wallets are very nice but i don't know about their bags

If their slings are anything to go by then the backpacks are probably really nice. We got one of their slings at an amazing price from that mulligan outlet store. Still, $120 is a lot for a backpack when it's pretty much more of a fashion statement. The backpack would look kind of out of place on my back as I don't really dress all that well most of the time. Practical is the way to go when you have a 1 yr old.

    • I have a Classic backpack in the non-plus size. It’s a good bag.

Personally I ordered both the plus and the smaller to compare and felt access in the smaller one was easier so returned the larger of the two and kept the other. The plus is probably a good fit if you’ll always have a laptop and can make full use of the seperate laptop compartment. Smaller one on the other hand has a single compartment.

I wouldn’t pay $220 necessarily but. This price I think they’re worth it.

    That's a pretty good buy…

Have to admit I didn't know they moved from Surry Hills. Shame to see them closing their store.

  • Backpack now out of stock

  • Theiconic has the backpack for $130 and if you use BEICONIC you get $20 off for first time users - I’ve purchased plenty of times and worked for me. Also free delivery. https://www.theiconic.com.au/classic-backpack-plus-1192053.h…

    • There were a few colour combos which were always on sale. I can't remember exactly but it was either $129 or $149, so assuming it is the higher end it's only a $20 saving.

The one in the OP was always full RRP.

Of course colour is personal preference as design is the same.

"LIFEUNCUT25" actually works and gives you 25% off so total of $96.75 :)

  • It's actually a nice looking bag, and it's always difficult to find good quality appealing items.

Cheap, unfortunately not ally looks cheap. Most can make do, and in most cases it's probably not worth spending more…if you got the cash tho, why not!
