About this game
Dare you re-write the entire narrative of human history? It's time to find out with your HUMANKIND Steam PC key. In this historical strategy game, you'll combine cultures to create a civilization that’s as unique as you are!

YOUR CIVILIZATION
Combine up to 60 historical cultures as you lead your people from the Ancient to the Modern Age. From humble origins as a Neolithic tribe, transition to the Ancient Era as the Babylonians, become the Classical era Mayans, the Medieval Umayyads, the Early Modern era British, and so on.

Each culture will add its own special gameplay layer, leading to near-endless outcomes.

  • Free on gamepass. Haven't tried it yet, can anyone comment on if it's worth a crack?

    • For free? Of course.

Like a lot of these exploration building games it is going through some patches for tuning but overall reviews are very positive.

No first hand experience because I pre-ordered to play on Mac and that version has been delayed.

    • +1

A nice alternative to CIV, although I found my first playthrough kinda dull so far. Lot's more skipping turns than I would expect otherwise.

    • If you're into 4X games then I think there is a lot to like here.

The game has some other victory conditions but primarily it is about earning fame and the player with the most fame at the end of the turn limit, standard is 300, will be declared the winner.

One of the nice differences from Civ is that you choose a different culture/civilisation every era you transcend through and you keep the bonuses of each culture, which can stack to make huge gains in the late game. The issue is, it is first come first served, so if you're latter than the AI to get to the next era you'll have less options to choose from. To get to an age you need to earn stars, after a certain number you can progress but you can also stay longer and earn more stars if you want. This makes you need to decide to stay in an age to reap some more fame and build unit districts to that civilisation or sacrifice that and instead get more choices for which civilisation to play in the next age.

I find the combat system is really good also, not that the AI is great at battles just yet, but I expect that will improve, just the way it is conducted is much better than Civ. Hard to explain but check out some vids or just get into the game and check it out.

I recommend trying shorter turn limit games to start with to progress quicker through the ages and start learning strategies for a longer match.

Hope you give it a try and enjoy it

  • Just cause the trailer is so awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmlaZN0RRiI

  • What's the usual price?

    • For HUMANKIND Standard Edition, it's $69.99 and for HUMANKIND Digital Deluxe Edition, it's $89.99. These prices are both from the Steam store itself.

  • honestly for all the hype … the fact there's been a couple of beta tests etc … i still found things like spelling mistakes and there's still glitches especially when playing multiple player online.

it's fun to a degree … it's a certainly upgraded version of Civ etc … but the trailer was a bit more animated than the game actually is. would have been cool to see planes constantly flying over the cities.

it's also a pain in the butt when you try to skip turns … like Civ you could "force" end of turn .. and any units which haven't moved miss out. But this it forces you to either skip the moves or do something in the cities and if you have heaps … it takes forever to do this.

Is it fun? Work has kept me busy so I haven't been playing as much as I would like to … its something new so yes

  • Dunno if I was playing it it right, but ended up with over negative 2 million influence points trying to take over the world. Got stuck in a stale mate when the computer started a city on island and you can't seem to attack from the sea.

    • I think your issue was that you had gone well and truly over your city cap, which gives you progressively bigger and bigger penalties for each city you go over the cap. Not such a big issue in the late game when you don't need to use influence for anything much other than civics but it is crippling in the early game if you have negative influence as you won't be able to attach outposts or absorb/assimilate other cities/independents.

  • Deluxe edition is $71.08 now
