Expires in just 30 days?!? NOT a deal…

Nobody with a Life is going to use up 1,000 SMS's in 30 days

This is just another in a long string of "misleading" "deals" IMO.

At least anyone who uses the Long Life pre-paid offer can get the usual 6 months + 6 months = 12 months' service, provided you:

    1. recharge by paying $30 before -each- 6 month period, &
    2. don't use up the total pre-paid balance over the 12 months

I don't think this offer will convince anyone to switch to Telstra, but if you're already Telstra prepaid, it makes sense to do your recharge online to get the freebies, even if you don't use them all, yeah?

    • You know when I read it originally I thought the same thing. Who in their right mind sends 1,000 SMS's in 30 days. In fact, the prepaid 3GS Telstra sells comes with 1,000 SMS's for the first 30 days as well. I would love to see someone actually use them!

BTW you know it's only the bonus SMS's that expire in 30 days right? the rest of your credit expires as per the normal offer you are on.

    • I average about 25 text messages a day, which comes up to 750 per month and don't consider myself a heavy phone user, so 1000 isn't that many.

      • In that case, Telstra's got a deal for you… :-)

  • Recharge on ebay for less. There are few reliable seller there

      any recommendations?

  • I like using paypal on the phone because my credit expires 2014. I used to be on longlife plan and found it was silly because everything was so expensive and would get more use with free text plan. Then I used paypal once because of emergency and found it out. Now I essentially have longlife and free text and data (albeit for 30 days)

OMG. Never ceases to amaze me people still use the telco invented junk called SMS, let alone would come to value it. 1K SMS in these days of data? Way to innovate, telstra.

    • Seriously? I use SMS all the time and I have unlimited calls.

If you need to send someone information they need to remember, need to compose info to get it across, dont feel like talking to whoever you need to contact, don't want to put up with someone's reply etc etc SMS is very useful at least for me.

Granted for Telstra to even limit SMS in this day and age, considering that it probably uses the least amount of network capacity of any service they offer is ridiculous.

      • Yes, definite. Your third para actually expounds my major point; yet (not so) sadly, would mean reversing the whole purpose txt messaging were 'invented'. At best, one might say the charging for SMS has helped(s) in recovering costs of building mobile networks.

Turn rather to E mail (or online Chat application) transmission, I submit, for your non interactive communication events , it'll largely prove worthwhile and leave SMS (and specially, its ugly, latter sibling, premium SMS) in the seedy land of Telco greed.

Is there anything TXTs can do that Email can't (do already better), besides work on non smart enabled devices.

Agree, just get a app! My fav is "Whatsapp". Free SMS/calls - even overseas.. First started with the "viber" app…Soooooo many avail now.
Remove Flagfall and then it would have been a interesting offer, not this though……..

Not everyone has a smart phone. For people who use their phone for communication instead of entertainment, many probably don't see the need to switch, or are still on contracts that Telstra may or may not have deceitfully made for two years instead of one (don't get me started grr)

Anyway, to get back on topic, if you recharge online through Telstra, don't forget their credit card charges, probably a paypal charge, and probably a charge for breathing as well. If your plan aready allows for as many sms as you tend to use, don't be conned into thinking this is a bargain.

Fair call, those with a smart phone, get a app….
Pretty sure if you don't have a smart phone in 2012, you WILL soon… Think about all the money you can save with the free SMS through apps:)

    • Well if you are in contract this won't apply to you anyway because it is only for prepaid :P

      • Byo, thanks :P
        Would not sign a 24mth contract….
Tpg,red bull, live connected, just to name a few … Sure you familiar with the competition :)
        Keeps competition healthy…

      • What, you only have ONE phone? lol

        • Not 3:) they don't fault and no need to buy another… Can sell you my old samsung omnia HD:P

  • I remember back in the days of Hiptop, me and my friends having "Hiptop SMS Races" seeing who could send the most texts in a month, ended up ~ 3000 SMS, pretty much using them like twitter, updating everyone, everytime. Hey - what else do you do when you work by yourself? Anyway, Telstra enacted their "Fair Go" policy, and asked me to reduce the amount of texts, or pay for them. 1000? I could do it, but why?

  • Dahm doesn't apply to Encore. I love my unlimited calls and texts.

theres no way i would go over 1000 texts a month. I use whatsapp & facebook alot so it cuts down on the amount of texts i need to send.
I also would rather recharge at Coles and get a petrol voucher & flybuys points than recharging online.

Anybody who uses this, instead of getting 10% Off, eg, at (was it DSE?) may see the low value of this "deal", eg, 10% of $30 is $3, while the value of the first charge's SMS bonus isn't much more than that, IMO.

    How much can 50 SMS's cost on a pre-paid plan… :-/

    • Talk & Text+ and Long Life
25¢ per message sent per recipient
      50 SMS = $12.50

      Text & Data
29¢ per message sent per recipient
      50 SMS = $14.50

      Simplicity
12¢ per message sent per recipient
      50 SMS = $6

  • You'll barely get 5% off from a legitimate source, ever. If you ever get it cheaper, it's from a store that has gone bankrupt and are selling off their E-Pay vouchers at a small loss.

In fact, the best deal I have seen for Telstra recharges is 20% off your third 30 dollar recharge, from Australia Post. That's $2 off each recharge.
