Just for a comparison, buying the Smart Grinder Pro and Bambino Plus (which has the newer 3 second heat up ThermoJet coil) together from TGG Commercial is $587 delivered.

    • Is the stainless steel plus available at this price?

    • +3

This is a better combination in my opinion too.

      • I don't know, the pressure gauge is really nice to have. The Dual Boiler is still my next pick

    • What's the price on the bambino?

Already have a burr grinder (average quality) that I'll use to begin with.

      • +1

A significant part of the resulting coffee comes from the grind. Don’t skimp on the grinder.

    • Why would that combo be better than the standalone BES870?

      • +2

more precise grind, you don't have as many settings i think its 16 of this one vs 60 settings on the SGP. this is good to get you started, but you will be looking for more precise grind for different brands of beans you buy trying to make the perfect cup.

        • +1

Just wanted to add, that with the Barista Express, along with the 16 grind adjustments you can also change the Burr setting, which will give some level of fine tuning, although probably not as close as a standalone grinder.

Here's a video on changing Burr Sizes.
          https://youtu.be/QNvOcE4-VEo

Appreciate all the advice on here, love learning about new things when it comes to the Barista Express.

          • +1

@TK Deadwalker: Thank you TK Deadwalker for the link to the video - very helpful!

          • +1

@TK Deadwalker: Note you can also (kind of) turn the Barista Express into a stepless using a binder clip to lock in settings between steps. This means for some scenarios you can actually dial in slightly more accurately than the SGP.

But the auto milk frothing of the Bambino Plus is awesome too.

            • @mjwills: @mjwills

That's an interesting hack, never heard about it, but I'll look into it. Thanks for the heads up.

      • +4

To add to the other comments - its also a much better upgrade pathway. You can replace just the grinder, or just the machine if you want to slowly make your way to a more serious set up, if you get addicted to the hobby. Higher quality grinders etc are never available in all in ones.

      • +5

Also depends on if you just want a quick cup with minimum fuss or interested in spending time on incremental improvements. The later means ongoing time and expenses on accessories and upgrades.

The Barista Express is an all in one unit, takes up less counter space, requires a single power point, has a larger drip tray, they are all convenience factors you want to consider.

Reason you want to go with Bambino Plus and Smart Grinder Pro (SGP) is flexibility of separate devices and better grind control from SGP. But if you care about grind control, you should also get a single wall basket, which is not included with the Bambino Plus and an extra cost.

I wouldn't worry too much about "upgrade path", even with the SGP, grinder is usually the first to upgrade, so you will be buying a new grinder anyway once you start looking for improvements.

        • +2

Theres so much product knowledge on these posts dont need to check the reviews

    • Does Bambino plus comes with single wall portafilter basket or you need to buy extra? So 3 sec heat up vs 30 sec not much difference?

      • It's a bit strange Breville only included double wall baskets with Bambino Plus.

        • That is odd, but speaks to the audience they're targeting.

          • +1

@cydia9k: Yes, a marketing decision no doubt. Consumers buying Bambino Plus are likely to use pre-grounded coffee, so double wall baskets make sense.

            • @browser: I just ordered one bambino plus today.

Now I do need to get single wall 2 cup basket. Anyone knows where so can get one that fits the portafilter. Breville has it $9 but sold-out. And I hate to pay more. I rather if I can pick up or cheap delivery

              • @mrTT: Alternative to Breville, you can also check out VST and IMS baskets, but needs to investigate about compatibility.

They are used in competitions are supposedly an "upgrade", I probably wouldn't buy them to replace Breville baskets, but if you are buying one it's worth to check them out.

        • Breville sell the sw on the parts website and according to "the internet" it works a treat…

I almost replaced my broken bes840/infuser with one.. fortunately I got the parts and worked out how to replace the solenoid..

          • @woodwa: The single wall finger I’m looking for is sold-out unfortunately on breville web page.

            • +2

              @mrTT: Call them.
I the past they had the issue where some parts are shown as sold out but they are available if you call them. Just broken website.

    • Not at the moment though. Bambino plus is discounted to 361 but the grinder is on their normal price 249

      • "Bambino plus is discounted to 361"
        Who is that from?

        • Tgg commercial

    • And for those of us without access to TGGCommercial?

  • +2

Keep in mind you dont get cashrewards/shopback when giftcards and/or Team member discounts are used.

  • Is the grinder in this the same as the smart grinder pro?

    • +1

The burrs are the same, but the steps between each grind settings are larger on this, so its really hard to get the same fine tune.

    • exactly the same, no. but it's good enough to get you started with. when you are on your journey to the perfect cup, you will get a dedicated grinder sooner then later, lol.

      • Yeah we already have a SGP and a small Lelit machine which is a few years old.

      • Seems like a waste if your plan is to buy a better grinder down the road.

  • Binglee is same price on their website. They have maintained this price for the past couple weeks at least for this colour combination.

    • Used a $29 voucher from Ebay to reduce the Bing Lee price. Had $6 shipping

  • Pretty sure TGG have the SQL for $599 as well. I bought one during the afterpay sale. I managed to kill the grinder in a week. Still waiting for them to replace it.

  • Bought the s/s one for the same price two weeks ago, love the machine, still mastering mil frothing

  • +1

For the non-coffee-aficionado, how does this Breville compare to Delonghi Magnifica?

    • The Breville is better.

  • All the reviews a saw on youtube rate the Breville as better quality. And there so many reviews it can get confusing

  • I am looking to buy a coffee machine, is there any advice on what to get?

    • +1

This machine is a favourite of reddit and ozbargain as a decent starting machine.

    • I've had my Breville Barista Express for over a year now, and it was the first coffee machine I purchased, and I'm still pretty happy with it. I was thinking about getting the Delongi Dedica or the Bambino Plus before seeing the prices of the Barista Express becoming "reasonable". Considering that you get everything you need (the pressurised, non pressurised baskets, a jug for milk frothing, steam wand and a built in grinder) all you need are the beans and you are ready to go.

So far I'm using the Airjo Enterprise Blend to make cappuccinos and I've been pretty happy with the results.

I'd recommend the Barista Express based on my experiences.

Although, I will admit, I wish I had some control over the temperature of the water, and a dual boiler would have been nice :)

      Good luck

      • What is your grinding setting ? And amount of coffee ?

        • For the Enterprise Blend, I have my Grind setting at 2, the Burr setting at 5. For a single shot I use 8.5 grams and for a double I use 15 grams.

  • I bought one now and looking for what people use for grinding setting for a best coffee from this machine. I use no. 4 and medium amount

    • +2

It depends on the coffee but for the recent Airjo Sumatra Blend I had grind setting of 3 with 18.5g in and 40-45g out in 30-35 sec.

      • With this criteria, how you find the pressure gage, is it within espresso range or it goes quite higher? I was told not to worry about the higher pressure as I find it not possible to achieve unless coarser and fast time.

        • +1

It goes to between 1'oclock and 2'oclock so well past the "espresso range".

    • +2

This very much depends on the beans you have and your personal preference. There's no one magic setting for all.

    • I bought one of these at the start of covid. I watched this lady's video and it really helped me understand how to "dial in" the settings. https://youtu.be/Z0O484KEC4Y

  • I must say this .. the sunbeam Barista is cheaper and does a good job. If milk drinks are the go thats a better machine than this for price to value. Neither is built to last. ..IMHO. If however true espresso matters then neither of these are good enough. But I do not understand the fascination with the Breville express unit, the sunbeam Barista does an equally good job and will last for the few years that the Breville express does. If you are into milk based drinks look at the Sunbeam unit, with a pressurised porta filter I can guarantee the output is similar only because I have tried them both :-D . But this is a good unit too all plastic though same as the Sunbeam so why pay more. Ultimately if you are starting off and not sure I would suggest the Sunbeam as opposed to the Breville…if you are going to hang around you will upgrade and if you are not your machine will be up for sale so save some bucks and get the Sunbeam instead IMHO

Edit.. This is a very good machine btw to everyone who has bought it..I am just saying that the Sunbeam is a better buy if you have bought this thats great I am sure you will not be disappointed

    • I am interested.

May I know which model you are referring to please?

    • +1

      with a pressurised porta filter

If you are willing to live with that, many coffee machines will perform roughly the same.

The fact is, many people won't be willing to live with a pressurised portafilter.

Although, to be honest I am a little confused with your comment since the Sunbeam Barista Max doesn't seem to even come with pressurised baskets.

      • Most people buying this unit are starting off on the Espresso journey and most if not all would use the pressurised basket which maybe why the Sunbeam is not as popular because the shots are under or over extracted. It;s a 58mm portafilter , how hard do you reckon it is to get a pressurised double walled filter ? Which is another plus point as opposed to the 54mm Breville. I do not own one by the way but I have done enough research on both these machines to confidently say that the Sunbeam is better value for money as opposed to this one. The best buy would be the Bambino plus/Bambino if looking at the Breville range or even generally speaking, paired with a half way decent grinder but whatever you buy in the Breville/Sunbeam/Delonghi range, it will not last long. Bambinos are fantastic value for money though. I use a silvia and will grab a Bambino when the price is right.

        • But the Sunbeam doesn't come with a pressurised basket. I am reluctant to accept your view on this model when you have never bought it, and make assertions about it that seem unlikely to be true.

And if you didn't mean that, you must be asserting that the Breville with the pressurised is as good as the Sunbeam with the unpressurised. Which isn't exactly a glowing endorsement of the Sunbeam if it is only as good as the pressurised basket on the Breville.

          • @mjwills: Yes it does not, Breville has identified the market correctly and Sunbeam has not . A pressurised 58mm basket is 10 bucks , the sunbeam even at full price is 100 bucks cheaper. Breville's 54mm size means more dollars to buy any accessories. Neither is the best dollar spent but if it was my money, I would spend it on Sunbeam. If anyone is going to be negging my post, I would like an explanation as to why you reckon the Breville is a better unit. I have pulled shots and used inbuilt grinder on both, there is hardly any difference.

            • @shaidas: I am not saying you are wrong - but https://coffeesnobs.com.au/forum/equipment/brewing-equipment… is reasonably representative of the common view of the EM5300.

Not everyone loves the Breville. Not everyone loves the Sunbeam. But 90% of reviews of the two will say the former is markedly better than the latter. Are they right? Well, that depends. If the Sunbeam works for you - perfect. Buy it and use it.

              • @mjwills: I have tried both and I can say that naked espresso is about the same, a flat white is the same hence the recommendation. I do not want or need this or the Sunbeam, I am trying to help people starting off. If you disagree that is good for you, but unless you have owned both for a length of time or researched both and can find why the Breville is better or like me you have tried both, just owning a product does not make it good or bad.

                • @shaidas:

                  or researched both

I have. The above link is one example. Trust me, there are many others.

Again, I am not saying people shouldn't buy the Sunbeam. They definitely can if they want to. But the internet generally prefers the Breville to the EM5300.

I personally think the Bambino Plus plus an unpressurised filter basket is a better starting point, but that is besides the point.

    • Whats with the neg without any explanation ? Could you at least explain why you think I am wrong before negging ?

If you buy this item, check out https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002566147929.html - worth buying to avoid wastage.

    • +1

A bit cheaper and this is the fixed version with no lose fitting that many complain about - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002558831884.html

      • Nice work finding a cheaper one. The one I linked doesn't seem loose to me, but maybe it will over time.

      • I wonder is there is something similar for 58mm.

        • 58mm is the standard size mate, just search for naked portafilter on any site of your choice

          • @shaidas: A naked portafilter is a completely different thing.

          • @shaidas: There are plenty of 58mm ones but none of them locks into Breville portafiler lugs.
Although maybe magnetic one is good too.

            • @SickDmith: Thats because Breville is a 54mm unit. A dosing funnel, naked porta filter anything that you want or need is available but if you have the Breville then you will pay extra because it is not the standard 58mm. If you have the Breville then search for 54mm accessories

        • What grinder do you have (so we can point you at the best options for a dosing ring)?

  • Out of curiosity for any Breville Barista Express owners, have any of the shots you have pulled been less than 93°C?

The Barista Express is advertised at 93°C, but even after 30 minutes of warming up, the highest temperature I have recorded is around 85°C.

    • +2

Run a single shot water through the porta filter before pulling an actual shot … the Breville machines do not warm up the portafilter, the grouphead does not transfer heat, does not matter how long you keep it on for. As an edit ..if you are asking this then maybe it is time to buy a different machine you seem to have out grown this one :-D

      • I've only had the machine for a year though and I've grown use to it, I don't think I can replace it just yet :)

I am a little worried as to why the temperature never reaches anywhere near 93°C, even after when I leave the portafilter in there to warm up with the rest of the machine, and then run hot water through it.

I was wondering if that was a common problem, but I'm starting to think that I may have bought a faulty unit ot maybe the thermometer may be faulty. Thank goodness for the warranty, but I'm reluctant to send the machine back, because it does everything else well.

Thanks for the advice though :)

    • +2

You can program temp to +/- 1 or 2 °C. They recommend to insert grouphead on and turn machine for 20-30min to heat it up. Then run couple of water shots to heat the internal.
I am not sure where you measured the 85°C in the cup or as water comes out of the portafilter? Also I understand if water is too hot it can lead to burnt coffee taste!. I just measured water temp coming out of my portafilter after 3 runs and it was nearly 90°C and that was just after 2 min from turn machine on.

      • Yea, so I have tried messing with the temperature controls, and I set it to +2°C but I'm still getting the same result, even after letting the machine warm up for more than 30 minutes with the portafilter attached and then running some hot water through the before taking the temperature, but still no luck :(

I have the thermometer positioned horizontally, where the shot would come out through the portafilter (through the double spout), so the thermometer would read the temp of the water just after leaving the basket.

After reading your experience of what your machine does (just after it's turned on), I'm thinking mine may have a faulty heating unit. I tried doing a couple of tests today, but only got 85°C as the highest.

I have seen that some people online have also posted similar problems with their machines not reaching optimal temperatures, so I might need to get in contact with Breville.

Thanks for your advice and your experience with your Barista Express as well, it really helps to diagnose what wrong with my one :)

        • Single or double wall basket?

          • @mjwills: Tried it with both single and double wall baskets and even no basket, but still 85, or even less.
