Sore Back, Can't Move. How to Take a Leak?

Hey,

I've done my back and am currently bedridden till at least 9pm. I can't really move as my back spasms everytime I try to. Been stuck like this for a few hours now and really need to pee.

Anyone have any suggestions? I don't think I can make it to 9pm when the doctor reckons the painkillers will kick in enough for me to shuffle to the toilet.

  • what happens at 9pm?

    • Painkillers were supposed to kick in to ease the pain enough for me to get out of bed.

Sorry, late to the forum. Sounds like you want a ‘uridome’ but not something you really have lying around the house, nor that you’ll likely need for long enough to justify it. You can get a urine bottle from a pharmacy, but as many have pointed out the 2 or 3l milk bottle is the universal home grown option, it’s definitely possible to use without moving much, but a lot of men have trouble urinating not standing up.

Do not stay in bed too long - it will make your back worse, you’ll end up with more pain , constipation, fear of movement and musculoskeletal pain/spasm/tightness. If the meds you’re taking aren’t helping definitely reconsult your dr, there are a heap of options for short term use. Look out for tingling/numbness in your legs, or difficultly with bowel or bladder movements (incontinence, altered sensation), these warrant prompt medical attention.

Get yourself to a musculoskeletal skeletal physiotherapist when you can if your dr supports this plan.

I started walking around a bit and it's definitely improving my condition. Thanks.

Going to visit a physio next week.

Doctor cleared me of nerve damage which is great.

  • you should probably wash it first. depending on which end, you might want to clean up the roots.

Male urinal from a pharmacy. Should be $10 to 15 unless they are taking the pi$$

    Breathing techniques work well.

I injured my back and had spasms and was hard at start but had to experiment to find out ways to get in and out of bed.

    • Holding my breath or taking deep breaths did help. I figured if it helps women in labour, I should give it a go.

      Thanks

      • To get in and it off bed a was using a rolling technique.

I would roll my legs off the bed first and use arms to push my torso up in one motion, like a see-saw would best describe it.
If I went slow the pain would come though so it was required that I do it quick.

Trial and error mate, that the only thing I can say.

    Hi mate,

Very sorry to hear about your pain.

I've done my back a couple of times, but never as bad as you have.
I have always seen a chiropractor post injury and they always get me mobile after as little as on visit, I would recommend that you pay a chiropractor a visit as they may be able to help you (depending on your injury of course)

Back injuries is a popular topic at my gym though, and I was talking to a chap the other day who was in a similar position as you're in, he couldn't move at all.
He told me that the only way he could take a piss was to basically get a plastic bag, wrap the end around the 'halfway' mark and use an elastic band/hand grip to 'create a seal' and contain any potential spillage (not too tight though so it doesn't block the 'flow')

Hope the above is helpful my friend

      Thank you.

A mate suggested a chiro as well and I'll definitely be visiting one once the pain subsides a bit.

Youtube Dr Stuart Mcgill, best expert for back pain, he has a lot of testimonies from a lot of popular athletes and worked with some of the best MMA teams too.

“There’s no such thing as non specific back pain”.

i used to work with a guy who said he got sick of getting up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet so he drilled a hole in the floor and got a length of garden hose and a funnel so he could pee in bed

    • I'm renting so that's a no go unfortunately.

  • Apparently a plumber is 300 dollar callout fee.

Get a GP to do a house call, that is the cheaper option.

  • Cut a hole in through the bed and put a bowl under it.

Sorry to hear about the back.

You could call 1800 catheter and get one installed.

    Don't forget tiger Balm

    • Doctor suggested voltaren so I'm going to give it a go. Tiger balm is the bomb though, used to love it for sports injuries when I was younger.

If you need stronger meds ask for prednisolone if your docs willing to prescribe it. Helps my back heal and stop being ridiculously inflamed when it gets thrown out real bad.

  • So its the next day. Buy some softners too. What about endone?

Apparently you can get fentanyl in patches but I bet its very hard to get.

The panadeine made me constipated but helped manage the pain. I'm mobile now besides pain when I sit or twist. Using a back brace and going to see a physio next week so won't need the painkillers but thanks for the suggestions.

      • Can you get in to see a physio this week? I would not leave this for a week. They are better than any tablet for this and a delay means you'll take longer to recover.

  • Can we get a Paint diagram please

Hopefully you don't need a bucket and a mop for that wet …

hi guys apparently the pain has gone all the way to the head, OP can't type a reply anymore.
let's support OP with thoughts, prayer and positive vote.

joke aside, let's hope your silence means you are better now mate..

    • Nah, not really. I'm mobile and able to get to the loo so problem solved. Don't need the painkillers any more but still uncomfortable to sit down. Booked in a physio session for Monday. And the doctor suggested I take the week off even though I won't be doing any lifting at work.

I did post above with the solution I went with which is an adult diaper and milk bottle. I am checking the thread occasionally and voting on good suggestions in the hope that someone else might find them useful.

      • The most damage I've done to my back is sitting at a desk too long.
Have you considered a standing desk? When i tried standing all day I just got sore feet :)
Standing up every 20 minutes or so can help.
Glad to hear you're off the pain killers.

  • Wet & Dry Vac, One of these is 20L should see you good for a while.

  • Siphon.

In all seriousness, what's your general health like? Nutrition, physical activity, weight, etc.

    • Nutrition is bad, been eating a lot of takeaway lately but I'm working on fixing this.

Physical activity - I work in a warehouse and while I'm technically an office worker, I do try to get out on the floor as much as possible to help out. I walk quite a bit at work, and do a bit of lifting up to 20kg. I do keep good posture when lifting. I don't have the most comfortable chair and it's something I'm looking to upgrade soon as there are days when I'm stuck in it for hours on end.

Outside of work I don't do much physically especially with covid.

      I'm 186cm and 102kg so don't think I'm overweight.

I had and still suffer from occasionall lower back spasms. What works for me is ibuprofen or Mobic.
    Hope you recover soon.

  • For reference, the vomit bags you get at the hospital or the chemist are great in these situations, for either end. Also useful for in-car emergencies. I have endo so have need of an emergency backup system. You can slip one under bum if are skilful about it.
Also camping I pee in my 2yos potty in the tent if it's cold /too far at night, just immediately soak up with a 19c nappy, wrap and bin it.
Will not squat in bush anymore after friend got 7 ticks in her labia at once, they are on the tall grass and jump right on. Shewee works for me after loads of practice, but NOT while drunk lol.

    FYI im a girl lol.

Just really sorry to hear your condition. I hope you get well very soon. All the best.

  • Stick your knob in a vacuum hose and pee into a bucket?
