Maybe just me, but I feel like at this price range Seiko’s become much more of a hard sell… it’s gotta be special.

That said, that dial pattern (especially the blue one) looks amazing.

      Agree.

It is all about brand recognition, people paying for thousands for a watch just to get a premium experience, and privilege.

My personal opinion to the watches in the market:
      1. Bang for buck, good built quality mechanical watches
      2. Luxury watches
      3. Smart watches

    • What would you rather buy instead in this price range out of curiosity?

      • +3

Honestly, it's quite an awkward price range. If I had to choose one at under 2k, I'd probably take a Longines HydroConquest (or Conquest). Oris and Tissot makes some good offerings in that price range as well, but I'm not well versed in those.

Arguably the Seiko GMT listed in this deal is a better watch (in terms of the movement and most of the details). But personally I prefer Seiko at the much lower price point (ie. Seiko 5's at 3-500 dollars) where they are basically unbeatable in terms of what they offer for the value.

imo once you start dishing out more money for a status symbol such as a watch, the brand name matters. Obviously you and I both know Seiko is a respectable watch maker that is at least on par with lower tier luxury brands like Longines, but most people associate Seiko with their low price offerings. I would argue this image is one of the biggest reasons why Grand Seiko isn't on most people's radars.

Thanks for sharing! Heurology is such a fascinating world to dip toes into.

Realistically, a large majority of people don't understand or appreciate watches so the difference between a watch that's $5000 and one that looks like it's worth $5000 is going to boil down to other factors.

At the end of the day I'm going to argue, it's about buying a watch that makes us happy. Or that's the rationale I'm going to make as I when I buy a Bulova skeleton watch, something that's considered garish by Heurologists.

    • It is nice looking but pretty expensive.
Seems like a lot of these Seikos are quite sizable, thick and heavy, so worth checking that and the lug to lug dimensions (just under 50mm). Seiko claims the Caliber 6R64 to be accurate to +25 to -15 seconds per day.

    Thanks OP, bought 2

Been looking for this exact watch. Thanks OP!

  • Its tempting as a bargain but I have given up my chance to buy Blackbay GMT (waited 18months) and
    gonna wait for OP…

    • Why have you missed your chance to buy a Blackbay GMT?

      • I was meaning to buy 58 black at first and… It was just too much collection for me I guess, obviously I will get a Rolex GMT 1000% but BB GMT didnt really click 4 me.

(they also offered 58 blue with fabric strap - Yeah should have got this one at least).

        • I'm waiting for a clear case back on the Blackbay GMT, yes it's meant to be a dive watch however many people don't dive the maximum depth, they did a clear case on the Blackbay Silver

Been umming and ahhing on a watch myself, every watch collector says to save up and buy the watch you WANT, rather than lose money/time on buying a stand in watch to fill the space. A temporary/halfway watch only puts an obstacle between you and your real goal, plus it's about the feeling of having the watch you want, which will never be satisfied with a replacement.

Good luck on getting a Blackbay!

    • I bought the BB58 and ended up selling it. Just didn’t feel like there was any quality or prestige behind it for the price tag.

    • Those look like a copy of the Rolex GMT, heaps cheaper I guess.

      • +1

Tudor is owned by Rolex. It's their cheaper brand.

        • A geez, didn't realise that. That's ok then :)

buy this watch to tell the time to get to work to earn money to pay for this watch. Like the hand on a watch, these are the days of our lives.

    • More sadsht than funny, tbh.

    • Can use your phone for that

    • Is there a setting for 9,9,6?

      • only 12, 12, 7

  • Is this one of the higher end watches that’s made in Japan?

    • +1

Grand Seiko is their luxury division.

      • Is Credor part of their GS line?

  • -1

If only there were a clock on my phone, which is always with me.

Is this some sort of peasant joke?

      • I think it's a poor person joke

      • -3

Actually it's a millionaire joke, since you asked.

  • Not a watch guy. Do these substantially gain value in the coming years or should I still be rocking Birkins?

    • I would suggest not.

    • Short answer no, long answer noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    • My oris had gone up in value, moreso the asking price has gone up in 9 years but none the less glad I got something quality and still looks like new considering.

Agree with Dr Fruit's comments above, the watch in this deal is kind of in between price ranges and better off getting a cheaper Seiko or something else more identifiable on a good deal (and or spending a bit more). There is still a lot of brands and offerings that are overpriced though, like Tag and Raymond Weil where you're paying a lot for the name and advertising so you have to still ensure the specs are up to standard - quality movement, sapphire crystal, good stainless steel (milled quality clasp) bracelet, decent lume, warranty etc etc.

  • I missed it. Back to full price

This, or a random meme stock on asx_bets / some random crypto?

  • Mid tier Seiko pricing is getting out of hand, $1.5K+ for a mechanical non-Grand Seiko only makes sense if you really like the design

Those of you shopping for "bang for buck, good built quality mechanical watches" can check the Orient Star line from Orient, all parts made in Japan and owned by the same Seiko Epson parent company

Orient also do not have a local Australia distributor - likely because Seiko Australia does not want the internal competition - so the pricing on Amazon, Chrono24 and the popular SE Asian stores is pretty sharp
