Buy iPhone SE Now or Wait?

Hi all, looking to buy an iPhone se. Is it worth waiting until the iPhone 13 comes out to see if prices of the Se drop? Or is it ok to buy now. Cheers

  • Wait. iPhone 13 line-up is around the corner. There'll likely be an iPhone Mini that may suit you better too as the iPhone SE is basically an iPhone 8 which is outdated now.

    • IPhone SE has been updated in 2020. It has an A13 Bionic, same as the one in the iphone 11.

I have both and it's a lightning fast phone. Camera is great too

The guy before you has not idea what they are talking about. Iphone SE and iphone 13 will be fighting on 2 ends of the budget. iphone SE at $500 - $650 is the cheapest entry point. iphone 13 would be $1300 - $1600. Yes the package would be significantly different (bigger screen on iphone 13).

iphone SE lifecycle it is about every 4 years. So next one won't be until 2023 or 2024.

        • iphone 13 would be $1300 - $1600

My iphone 11 pro was over $2000 lol
I think $1600 for iphone 13 is being too generous.

          • @Orico:

I think $1600 for iphone 13 is being too generous.

            LOL must be less generous.

My saying is buy Apple (shares) not Apple (phones)

    • This site says the se is updating soon? It this likely?

      • Usually on the money on the right of it, it has newest leaks relating to the device. Look through those and you will get an idea ifits legit or not. I'd say likely.
        All rumours here:

Note: Ming-Chi Kuo is usually pretty good on his predictions.
Also Note: Delays due to hardware shortages (Chips etc) might cause delays.

The recent price drop of iPhone 12 mini makes it a better option than iPhone SE. I would wait until the release of iPhone 13.

Hey! Tbh same boat as you - always favoured the compact sized smartphone and TouchID based authentication in a masked world is almost a no brainer, but let's see how the new iPhones impact the prices of the SE. Perhaps we'll get a sale similar to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/639434 at some point. I've known the previous SE model to go down to pretty low prices. Keep an eye out for sales!

Telstra may have some stock of the 12 mini at $400 off (not as good as Telstra Day pricing, but not bad either), so $799 for 64GB v $649 for the SE. Just select Outright and don't add a plan. Much better buying than the SE at the price, as you get a more modern processor, more RAM, OLED screen, better camera and Face ID…

    • Thanks! Will consider this!

  • I got a refurb 2nd gen SE on Amazon for ~450 as a secondary phone. Well worth having Touch ID when wearing a mask. Face unlock with an Apple Watch is a workaround at best, and doesn't work when opening my password manager. Face ID on the iPhone 13 is rumoured to work with masks without needing an AW, but it's only a rumour.

You can get the 12 mini at a decent price (maybe better still when the 13 is released) now. That's what I'd be going for if I wanted a smaller iphone.

  • Chip shortages might keep prices up if they can't make enough ihone 13s

  • Merged from Will The iPhone SE Go Cheaper in Price?

Hi OzBargain, I have been looking to get an iPhone se but the price is putting me off (has been the same price since launch I believe?) So, is there a chance the price will drop? Or can I get it cheaper than the going price $678? And no, not interested in the new ones, not paying 1.2k +

    Thanks

    • Find one second hand for $300 on Facebook marketplace or gumtree

    • Yes it will drop eventually.

    • Yes, for sure, when the next SE comes out.

    • why not Xr

    • I got a brand new SE from a Cash Converters for $430 just the other day for my grandfather.
Better to look at an XR though, it has newer design and much better battery life. Going for good price now as they are on clearance due to being discontinued.
Costs $600, but you can get for $550 from Harvey Norman website if you pay with LatitudePay which gives you a $50 discount (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/655644). That offer ends tonight though.

iPhone XR has faceID which is a PITA with masks

    • yes

  • you can buy se 2nd gen unless if you don't care about the battery,
the low light camera perfomance and the big bezels.
