What's the gist of this game?

    • +7

It is a time of unrest in 1920s Europa. The ashes from the first great war still darken the snow. The capitalistic city-state known simply as “The Factory”, which fueled the war with heavily armored mechs, has closed its doors, drawing the attention of several nearby countries.
Scythe is a 4X board game set in an alternate-history 1920s period. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor. In Scythe, each player represents a character from one of five factions of Eastern Europa who are attempting to earn their fortune and claim their faction's stake in the land around the mysterious Factory. Players conquer territory, enlist new recruits, reap resources, gain villagers, build structures, and activate monstrous mechs.

Wow, you type a lot faster than me…

Cut and paste is pretty neat feature.

            @Fredorishi:

Cut and paste is pretty neat feature.

Yes, but to cut and paste each character would take me 10-15 minutes !!!

            • +6

@jv: What can I say. I'm a highly skilled cutterer and pasterer.

        • +1

pretty sure you'd be twice as fast if you didn't highlight so many words..

          • @Jaspa7:

if you didn't highlight so many words..

            How many should I highlight?

    • +1

But personally I was hoping it was about the books of the same name. "Gleaning" (killing) people with zero consequences would have been way more fun!

      • -6

"Gleaning" (killing) people with zero consequences

A bit like Vic government's hotel quarantine stuff up from last year then???

        • +1

You mean, Fed government, but yeah. Something like that. Here's a link for you. Aimed at the "young adult" My 13y.o. got me in to them. Quite enjoyable imh, not "young" opinion.

            @Fredorishi:

You mean, Fed government, but yeah.

Nope, it was the VIC government that hired untrained, irresponsible security guards and implemented an incompetent contact tracing process and team… Resulting in almost 1000 deaths.

            • @jv: Yeah, but aged care is a fed responsibility and that's where the deaths occurred. Not interested in a debate tho. And totally irrelevant to the OP.

              • -1

                @Fredorishi:

Yeah, but aged care is a fed responsibility and that's where the deaths occurred.

The deaths occurred because we didn't have vaccines and the Vic government allowed the virus to run rampant in this state through their incompetence.

All other states also had federal managed age care and had nowhere near as many deaths…

              • @Fredorishi: As is border security and quarantine in the first place. Proper quarantine facilities should have been spun up last March at the latest. Hotels were never designed to hold an airborne disease at bay.

                • +1

@Wraith: Personally I think this entire issue started with the big bang approx 13.7 billion years ago, what a prick of a thing to happen, such a cockup.

                  • @esq: Yep. Thats Dan the Dictators fault too. Lol.

Personally I think this entire issue started with the big bang approx 13.7 billion years ago

It was utter chaos… Not unlike Victoria in 2020…

                • @Wraith:

Hotels were never designed to hold an airborne disease at bay.

                  I wonder who's idea that was ???

                  • @jv: Do you have any similar comments about NSW as well JV or is this a purely a "bag the Labor party" thing?

                    • @AlanHB:

Do you have any similar comments about NSW

Sure, how many deaths have NSW had compared to VIC ?

                      • @jv: Oh it is just a "bag the Labor party" thing. Otherwise it's hard to compare deaths due to vaccinations.

                        • @AlanHB:

Oh it is just a "bag the Labor party" thing.

Nothing to do with the party, just highlighting the incompetence of the current VIC government in power…

WA government are doing a pretty good job… Have I 'bagged' them ???

                          • @jv: No, but you likely would if they had any cases.

Right now NSW is leading the charges on cases, with each day being more than double that of Victoria's 2020 peak. Why aren't you criticising them?

  • +1

    Looks interesting, anyone played this?

      • +10

It's one of the most celebrated board games of all time, it's 14th overall on BoardGameGeek.

      • +2

        This game is great!
Currently sitting at #14 overall of top board games from BGG, the expansions are pretty good too.
        https://www.boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame

    • Yeah. Fantastic game for 1-5 players (expansion can increase it to 1-7 players).

    • Yeah I picked this up last year. Been my favourite game for awhile. I highly recommend it.

    • I've been playing it recently. Minimal combat but reasonably strategic resource management and territory control for the most part. Been enjoying it so far.

    • -1

I'd give it a solid 7 out of 10 - but that puts dozens and dozens of games ahead of it which makes it pretty hard to recommend.

lots of cool ideas and exceptional artwork, but it's all a little half-baked IMO - I particularly dislike the end game condition and the final scoring. Some of the things I don't like are somewhat fixed with the expansions, but there's a lot of bloat there too and you're looking at quite a few extra dollars to get them all.

  • Any discount for the Scythe expansions?

    • Sorry, not ATM.

  • +2

Damn! I was just hoping to find a discount on this game! OzBargin is the best!!!

    • Is that an Australian Gin Bar?

  • +6

Good price but I would avoid shopping with Gamerholic, terrible customer service.

    OP posts ever so often
People comments about lack of communication from OP once order placed
OP promises to look into it (possibly because he does not want his sales to be affected)
And we don't hear from OP until his next post

    Fun fact
Gamerholic is the only Australian store on Boardgame Oracle where users have reported an issue with this retailer

    • Unfortunately they have accepted purchase of games they no longer have in stock. Happened to me a while ago. A game was supposedly in stock, bought it, didn't hear from them for a week and a half. It was only when I inquired that they fessed up to not actually having it in stock. I do wonder what would've happened had I not sent them an email. Having said that I've bought off them before without issue.

you forgot to add- only when we post on ozbargain

        from OPs post 9/8/21
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/643285

Guys, you said something similar the last time I complained about this on OzB many months ago. I sent through all the information back then but you could not match it to your records even though I sent precise PayPal Invoice and eBay purchase details.
I gave up because having spent hours already on this, my time was worth a lot more than the $80 or whatever the value was that I lost.

        and from OPs post 13/07/2021
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/637629

Here's my poor experience. They still owe me a refund (+ the shipping costs) of a game called Concordia Venus (purchased approximately 2 years ago).

I bet you those two customers never received a decent response in 24 hours

        • I can actually provide an update with this. They refunded the cost of the game but not the shipping. I sent a few follow up emails and didn't get a proper response (things like they've already put through the refund etc). The best part was I got charged the PayPal fee, so I got about $1-1.50 less than what I paid for the game (and of course no shipping refund).

Similar to the other story you qouted I also got the BS of it not matching their records despite receipts etc.

Overall an experience of 1/10 (actually straight up zero, two years for a partial refund and literally nothing else? I paid roughly $20 for this experience.) Would recommend avoiding for the saving of $10 relative to other stores, not worth the hassle.

Negged it this time Vs my previous post because I was open to see what would happen.

          • @gnarlyrocks:

They refunded the cost of the game but not the shipping

            Thanks for the update mate

Just to confirm you ordered a game, they sent you the wrong one, and it took them over two years to refund your money minus shipping costs $20, for their mistake?

And in those two years did OP always respond within 24 business hours as he claims he does

            • @docians: Essentially that's right (also minus PayPal fees for the refund lol). No, lots of long periods of no contact and I'd always have to initiate talks

      • +1

        The truth

No, lots of long periods of no contact and I'd always have to initiate talks

Looks like the only time OP responds within 24 business hours, is on Ozbargain and that too only when he has a new sale here

As per above post… It's a well known name on Facebook board game groups. Do some digging and come to your own conclusions…

That said price looked really good until I saw the seller.

Wasn't this $80 delivered on Amazon recently ?

    • +1

It was $63.60 back in 2019, but I dont seem find any deal from Amazon these 2 years….

      • ah the good old days
I had purchased this for $63.51 in 8/2019, back when cashback for games was a regular thing

  • Waiting for a free shipping code, I have others games I want to get but with the shipping, it ends up more expensive…

  • Says $95 for me

    • Please use the discount code!

  • +4

Amazing these guys are still allowed to post here

  • Are you guys likely to get any Memoir 44 stock in shortly and any chance of a deal?

    • -1

We have it in stock but given the limited amount, I don't think we can offer a deal at this stage.

      • Oh, OP checks in on the deal to talk about selling a product, But Doesn't address all the problems above?

        Good customer service there /s

        • He's all about the munny hunny bunny

          • @docians: 44 + vs 2- votes means they'll continues to receive free advertising from Ozb. Trouble with seller is a valid neg reason btw

        • Hi,

Only if we send you the wrong item we expect you to pay for shipping to return the wrong item for OUR fault and we will take two years to refund your money (minus the shipping costs which the customer has to shell out)

Please remember to be persistent with your emails despite taking our own sweet time to reply. Some of our customers have simply given up due to our tardiness. Our heart goes out to them (while their money stays with us)

We assure you we will keep posting deals on Ozbargain and keep promising to reply in 24 business hours. We firmly believe there is a sucker dear customer born every minute
