I think these have soldered connections internally. Mixed reports on r/datahoarder.

Nice price. If you want a 3y warranty instead of 1y and built in encryption/password protection, go for the WD My Passport 4TB Portable which is $139 at JB Hi-Fi with free delivery. This is what I've been looking at but haven't yet purchased.

Not bad. FYI - Amazon has for $137.76 free prime delivery.

  • thanks op! ordered

  • Does this work with PS4 as an external storage?

    • Yes

  • Can you use it as SATA drive?

    • No. these are not shuckable. The USB connection is soldered into the board

For this reason I don't recommend purchasing these, if you damage the USB port somehow, then getting your data off sucks hard

  • Every WD drive I purchased failed. Should I risk this. Dunno.

    • lol what are you doing to your drives…

Just movie storage. Most sit unused for months at a time then when I dig one out to watch an old movie it's got bad sectors up the whazoo.

        • Same here.

It seems to be okay if you're constantly copying in and out, but leave it for too long and the files can't be read.

          • @Jiv: Odd. I have multiple old external WD drives lying around which I access every 1-2 years for a random file.

Never had any issues with them but, of course, now that I've said it…

          • @Jiv: I've had all sorts of brand hard drives sitting in my wardrobe unused for months some years, decades with no issues,. you don't have them stored near a 240 volt line maybe hidden in wall unless your unlucky to get few duds

Edit: unless older hard drives were better made lolz

    • I've had exactly the same experience with Seagate over the years…won't touch them now…the Toshiba's I have seem to be going strong though.

I missed the last 4TB HDD from Mwave deal, It was a pickup but I was like 20minutes from them. So desperately looking for a 4TB HDD deal pretty much everyday😂

  • I've owned two of these drives for over 3+ years now. No issues. Great drives for media storage.
