  • Can this work on a wifi network without the internet connected?
I want to use it as a baby monitor with old phone and a 2nd router without internet connected

    • +1

I have two of them. I have to use Internet connection so I guess yes. I am not expert other than plug and play.

      • Does it need app or can view via pc?

      • How's the night vision on these?

        • Very good. Much better than wyzecam v2. Works with Google home too.

      • No they're not. Not 'only'. You can access the RTSP stream directly, for example using VLC or ffmpeg, and so it's almost certainly going to work with local network-based systems

        • You're right, thats great, thank you.

I bought one of these about 2 years ago and at the time TPLink told me it only supported App-based. So I'm glad to be wrong here, it means I can take it out of the drawer and actually get some use out of it.

EDIT: Ah, I have a KASA not a TAPO. They look so similar, but yes, these are better it looks like.

I have these running on a wifi network without internet access (using home assistant and direct rtsp streaming).

After setting it up with internet, you can still fire up the Tapo app and assuming you are on the same network and cam IP didn't change, it will load up the cameras even if they are not connected online.

    • +2

You can use them with RTSP, you may have to set it up with an internet connection but won't be required afterwards.

I've used this feature to view my cams on the computer and it works well.

    Does this record to anything?

    • SD Card? In the description?

      • Would it record to the cloud?

        • You will need to subscribe to their cloud service.

  • +2

Grr got me excited lol need one of these but I'm linked to the Kasa app for everything else

Ah well will wait for the Kasa model to go on special

  • Nice OP.

You may want to avoid wearing your spedos infront of this one however….

    • +1

Why? Does that burn the camera's lens?

      • +1

Objects in lens are smaller than they appear

  • +2

    Expired? $54.79 for me…

  • +1

    showing $54 for me.

  • Good price from an reputable brand.

  • so i'm going to compare the C100 which I got to this model (and got it at binglee so i'm just putting links to compare)
    https://www.binglee.com.au/tp-link-tapo-c100-home-security-w…
    Lens: F/NO: 2.0, Focal Length: 3.3 mm
    Image Sensor: 1/3.2

    https://www.binglee.com.au/tp-link-tapo-c200-pan-tilt-home-s…
    Lens: F/NO: 2.4; Focal Length: 4mm
    Image Sensor: 1/2.9“

    Apart from the SKU, they have the same specs;
Night Vision: 850 nm IR LED up to 30 ft
Memory Type: Micro SD up to 128GB
    Resolution: 1080p
    Recording Format: H.264
    Operating Temperature: 0°C~40°C (32°F~104°F)

If i had to look at this camera compared to C100, I don't think you can tilt the camera head although it says you can? i'd have to watch a video about it but theres really not much difference between the two cameras? lol apart from this camera being a bit cheaper to buy now via amazon?

    • Biggest difference is one is fixed, the other is 360…

Smooth Pan and Tilt: 360°horizontal range and 114°vertical range

      • assuming you would be able to control this from the app to move it around then?
as with the C100 it was fixed to how you physically angled it with the camera

        • -1

Of course you can control it with the app. Hence why it advertises as pan/tilt camera, and the C100 doesn't.

I'm not sure why this obvious difference is so hard for you to see

  • damm that was quick.. lol

  • You can't save and download recordings through the app, need to unplug micro sd card and out into a pc how useless

    • You can also use apps and home-based network recordings. It's roll-your-own though

      • yeah for the c100 i could save it via the app and download it but yeah would have to use the app live to do that else need the SD card to record offline (which i haven't done yet so still yet to try)

    • +1

Yes, you can. It's under Playback & Memory.

  • This is (was) a good price for these. I bought one from Bing Lee a few weeks ago. It's not bad, but has some quirks.

The strength of the wifi is not great; it doesn't penetrate as well through obstacles as your modern phone does.

Every so often it misbehaves. I can't quite define it, but sometimes night vision gets stuck on. These misbehaviours might be related to the poor wifi, I don't know.

I wouldn't rely on it for any high availability need, but for the price they're not bad.

I’ve been running two of these for well over a year and haven’t had the issues you describe.

      • Me neither. They've been pretty solid for me. Can't complain.

  • Solid. I got this for $59 from amazon before….

  • Can anyone recommend a camera similar to this, battery operated?
