  • Will this work with Google Chromecast TV to extract surround to toslink ?

    • Does you TV have toslink? If so, use that. Otherwise by this.

      • Old TV toslink can't do surround to home theatre receiver

        • Toslink should support Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS.

Your TV might not support those surround sound formats, if that’s this the case then buy this audio extractor.

          • @guidedlight: How about Netflix and Prime because a lot of them won't do Dolby Digital Plus

            • @superforever: Not Dolby Digital Plus, just standard Dolby Digital. That’s the best that Toslink supports.

All surround audio content can downsample to either Dolby Digital or DTS.

              • @guidedlight: This one said, I tried another one before it won't work with DD Plus and won't downsample

                Supports Audio Extractor

The audio extractor allows 3.5mm / SPDIF to work simultaneously.

                Audio format:

                3.5mm supports PCM/LPCM2.0
Optical Toslink supports 5.1CH Max, Dolby-AC3 DTS
HDMI supports 7.1CH Max, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dobly ATMOS

        • Old TVs often have a coaxial output as well as a Toslink.

Also, I got Dolby Digital 5.1 to work on my old first gen Chromecast by plugging directly into the amp, not the TV. But you obviously need an amp with HDMI…or this. Used Bubbleup app to stream movies from my phone.

          • @tunzafun001:

But you obviously need an amp with HDMI

Yes I have but just want to point out if this kind of extractor can do Netflix or Prime and from my experience they can't.

    • Yes, it supports audio extractor.

      • Dolby Digital Plus? Somewhere in the description said Yes somewhere didn't say

        • As per others here, the device will extract 2.0 and 5.1 sound from HDMI and output 2 channel to the 3.5mm jack, and 2.0 or 5.1 to the optical out. All other sound formats are ignored and "passed through" on the HDMI out.

Thus it should extract two-channel stereo PCM, Dolby Digital/Dolby Digital EX, DTS Digital Surround, and DTS ES to optical out. But 5.1/7.1 multi-channel PCM, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, and Auro 3D Audio wont be, and will be pass through HDMI only

          • @walaj:

But 5.1/7.1 multi-channel PCM, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X, and Auro 3D Audio wont be, and will be pass through HDMI only

Yes won't extract DD+ with Netflix or Prime.

Sounds impressive, why do I need one?

These are useful if you have an older AV Receiver that doesn’t support 4K @ 60Hz HDMI video, you would let the HDMI Audio Extractor handle the video signal and pass the audio to your old audio system via toslink.

Personally, I don’t want to update my audio whenever my TV is replaced and this lets me do that.

Most TV’s will have a toslink output already, which might make this device redundant. But it’s definitely useful for some.

I used one when I connected a PS4 to a projector. Without this, I would have had to use headphones

  • Genuine question, why is this better than cheaper alternative like this?

    • The one you have linked to does not support 4K@60Hz.

    What about this:

I have an Xbox Series X connected to a Logitech Z-5500 5.1 speaker system via toslink and this extractor works a treat.

  • Do these introduce sync issues between video and audio? I have an older receiver with toslink, and was planning on taking video out from graphics card and extracting it. No poijt if theew is lag

Have this. No bargain - normal price.

It sync only at power-up - both source and display need to be “on” before this, so, needs own power switch. Works with FireStick 4K, not with Apple TV 4K. Returning to Amazon. No bargain - normal price.

  • Today I just received mine PORTTA HDMI Switch 4x1 4k 60hz with audio extractor. I'm using it to connect my xbox series x, one s and switch to a single monitor and a 2.0 Logitech speaker and it works well.
