What Are The OzBargainers Communities Favourite Condiments/Sauces?

So I got a recommendation from a Chef friend on her favourite chilli oil. After giving it a go it is now one of my new favourites so thought it'd be interesting to see what are others favourite condiments/sauces and brands and what foods you put them on.

I can start, so my go to condiment is chilli oil. One of my favourites now is based in Melbourne - Ronin Chilli oil. A short review: Not super spicy but rather it has a nicely balanced kick with heaps of Unami flavour bombs and various textures. Dumplings, dry noodle dishes, pastas, toasties, stir fries… the list goes on. Many of you will be familiar with Lao gan ma Crispy Chilli Oil and that is decent and always a staple in my own pantry. Also lots of different hot sauces out there to go with BBQ meats, glazed chicken wings.

Edit:
Other sauces that are awesome:

A few of my favourite hot sauces:

Tried various chilli sauce, but the best one for eating with rice dishes is Singapore sembal nasi padang.

    Sriracha for the rest.

  • +3

soy sauce. goes on everything, avocado, eggs, potatoes, chicken, lamb, beef, in stews and casseroles,…

  • +9

    Lao Gan Ma Chili Crisp
Lee Kum Kee Chiu Chow Chili

  • I was given a large bottle of Maggi Seasoning. I gave tried it on various dishes, including on underseasoned banh mid, but a bit at a low where to use it, as it tends to be really noticeable in soups etc.

Who here uses Maggi, and where?

    • +3

Add small amounts to soups, sauces, marinades and stews. Also add it to things like scrambled eggs, meat sauces, stir fry. It has more umami than soy sauce, some people say it is like soy sauce and worcestershire sauce mixed together.

    • +1

I sprinkle it over veggies when stir frying them.

My new favourite is Kewpie (Japanese) wasabi mayo.

  • +1

    STUBBS Spicy BBQ sauce

  • Secret Aardvark Habenero Sauce. Especially on pizza, I buy it in the 1.9 litre bottles now.

  • +4

Frank's hot sauce - delicious and surprisingly works on so many dishes.

    Fountain Tomato Sauce > *

Me too. I love it. Have you tried the Fountain Smokey BBQ sauce. I love it on scrambled eggs, toast and a slice of cheese.

  • HP Sauce all the way! ( HP stands for 'Houses of Parliament )
Been eating it for 60+ years and goes great with sausage, fried eggs and chips with a dip piece(bread soaked and fried in sausage fat) + or - Heinz baked beans on the side! Yum! Yum!

    • Had this recently for the first time in many years, it was a lot fruitier than I remembered.

I didn’t see them listed earlier, I really like:
Nandos sauce (medium is what I get most often but they’re all good)
    Tabasco
    Tapatio
Cholula (I don’t have a strong preference between cholula and Tapatio, both less spicy and more sauce-y than Tabasco)

    • +2

El Yucateco worth a shot if you like those Mexican style sauces.

    • I really liked Tapatio but Woolies stopped selling it :(

  • +1

    Nandos sauce on everything

    • Which flavours? Also have you tried Nandos marinade as a hot sauce?

      • +1

Extra B Hot or Extra Hot
I had marinade once on raw chicken cooked but never used it as sauce. I don’t really cook well haha but it’s why I use Nando’s on everything

  • I'm thoroughly enjoying the the sauces/condiments available from Beerenberg, especially their birdseye chilli sauce.

  • Sweet Bay Rays BBQ sauce mixed with Sriracha

  • Thomy Mayo
Löwensenf Extra (eye watering German mustard)

  • Tabasco original and Tabasco Habanero

  • +3

    Cholula Hot Sauce

    Franks Extra hot

  • My wife and I are huge fans of Kewpie Japanese Mayonnaise. Tastes even better when they're on sale, because they're ordinarily a little pricey

Byron Bay Fiery Coconut Chilli Sauce with Curry & Ginger, available through Woolworths. It has to be this flavour. I tried a few of their other flavours but those don't come close.

I came across this sauce while eating at Hog's Breath Cafe. Go amazing with potato gems and chunky chips. Finger licking good. I literally never leave any bits of this sauce in the bowl each time I have it.

The only downside to this sauce is that it's quite thick and difficult to pour if you kept it in the fridge after opening. I scrap out a little bit at a time with a long thin spoon or a chopstick.

Lingham's Garlic Chilli Sauce, available through Coles. Go well with fried rice, stir-fry noodles or dumplings. Not so much as an add-on to the recipes but for when you want to add more heat to your bowl.

  • Abc Chilli Sauce Extra Hot

Massel Vegetable Stock Powder in soups and baked vegetables.
    Coles Kitchen Green Goddess Dressing.
Fountain Sweet Chilli Sauce, also their Hoisin, Soy and Thick Mint Sauce.

And there is a heap more I like too, lol.

Kewpie mayo/ yuzu mayo goes well on everything
    Kewpie roasted sesame
Shrimp satay >>>> lao gan ma (tooooo bland not gonna lie)
    ABC extra pedas > sriracha
Maggi seasoning: literally MSG bomb, can't live without lol

  • Hungry Jack's Spicy Sauce.
I hope they can comeup in bottle in colesworths.

  • Any el yucateco but green is my favourite.

  • Maggi rich gravy mix $25 ish for 2kg makes something like 20L and last years.

  • There's some asian dipping sauce when you have salt and pepper squid, nam jim (something like that). It's really nice. I think it would be good with soft shell crab too.

Been a huge fan of Heinz reduced sugar/salt ketchup since trying it years ago on a whim to help with heartburn

Every other reduced sugar/salt sauce I've tried tastes awful, like someone took regular tomato sauce and mixed in a tube of cheap toothpaste and a bottle of sugar free homebrand lemonade. Gritty, bitter and with that cheap sweetener after taste

But this one just tastes and feels like regular ketchup, but with half the calories and without the inevitable heartburn, almost a miracle product

Same with their smokey barbecue sauce, was shocked to realize that 50% of most barbecue sauces are just pure sugar, like one serving of Masterfoods BBQ sauce is 2 teaspoons worth, VS 1 teaspoon worth for Heinz

Somehow Heinz has worked out a way to make the same product with half the sugar and 90% of the flavour, hats off to their R&D department

  • Sriracha and Mayo/Aioli together and Oporto garlic dipping sauce

  • Where to find ronin chilli in nsw? I want to try. I don't want to pay shipping

    • Not too sure about stockists in NSW for Ronin. In Melbourne they are based in Docklands and sell online and through Chef's Hat

    • I’m in the same boat!

  • Reggae Reggae Jerk BBQ (UK)
    Valentina Salsa Picante (Mexico)
Lillie's Hit Smoky BBQ Sauce (NZ)

All amazing and worth looking for.

  • Coles Special Nugget Sauce (Sweet Mustard)

But it looks like they've just stopped selling it :-(

  • +1

    Cornwell's Lancashire Relish.

How hot is the Ronin Chilli oil? Looking for some chilli oil that packs a nice punch.

    • It is not super super spicy (it does have that nice kick) but it balances the flavour elements and texture of a very good chilli oil. It is very addictive

      • Going to have to check it out!

    • https://mrstranskitchen.com.au/product/sate-chilli-oil/ - is the hottest chili oil I've come across… bird's eye chilies… when you're used to pilling the chili oil on, this one is more in the half-a-teaspoon category… good stuff…

2 tsps PeriPeri Mayonnaise + 1tsp Chilli Garlic Pesto + Pinch of salt. It will result in a orange sauce. Yummy. But, I bet it will add 300calories to your food.

Korean ssamjang, soybean paste with chilli. Love dipping cucumber and carrots or just about anything

  • +1

    Oporto original
    Nando’s peri peri hot

  • +2

    Chat masala
    Coriander chutney
    Tamarind sauce

    All from Indian store

  • homemade Carolina reaper chili jam. homemade wolstershire sauce.

  • This (https://www.nestle.in/brands/maggisauces). Tried once from a local Indian grocery store next door and keep buying it frequently. Much more flavourful than local tomato sauces/ ketchups which taste a bit bland now when I compare. I did some research later and realised it has a massive market share in India for decades and has been absolutely #1 despite presence of Heinz, Del Monte and many other international/ local brands. Can't say much abt salt/ sugar content as I haven't checked but taste-wise it's great.

  • Melbourne Hotsauce has a great range… Love the Reaper Whisky

  • +2

I much prefer Aioli with chips rather than tomato sauce.

  • +1

Koon Yick Wah Kee Chilli Sauce
    Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce

  • Nando's Peri-Peri Hot Sauce 250mL on everything. $5 on sale (from $5.75) at Coles. It is mainly sodium, almost no KJ. The sauce + brown rice + canned kidney beans makes a simple healthy lunch.

  • Not a sauce but furikake is amazing in any rice dish. Katsuo flavour is the bomb

  • More for cooking than as a condiment, but liquid smoke. Adds a little hint of smokiness with zero effort.

  • Lao gan ma chilli oil. This stuff is addictive.

  • +1

    Franks hot sauce

  • My SO loves my home-made special sauce.

  • Colmans mint sauce is always in the fridge. Cracking with roast lamb or roast potatoes.

  • Kaitaia Fire Chilli Sauce

    ABC Extra Hot Chilli Sauce

    Whitlocks Tomato Chutney Sauce

    Watties Tomato Sauce

  • Lao gan ma Crispy Chilli Oil with Peanut (never black bean…shudder)
    Lee Kum Kee Hoisin
    Kewpie Mayo Sriracha

  • +1

Great forum topic 👍 looking forward to trying some of these

Frank’s Xtra hot or Tapatio for hot sauce
Masterfoods hot or mild English mustard
The masterfoods hot chilli sauce is nice on occasion - if you want that kebab shop vibe at home
Ginger scallion sauce (the stuff that comes with Chinese bbq sauce) - not sure if this counts as it’s generally fresh
Kewpie (wish I could eat it more, have to secret eat it away from the egg allergic kid - looking for a semi decent egg free/vegan Mayo if anyone knows of one).

  • Viandox

It's like a soy sauce from France. The BEST soy sauce I've ever had.

    • These small batch hot sauces are very good: Melbourne Hot sauce

      And Dexter's hot sauce

    • Chillibom does a quarterly subscription I've been getting it for a few years now. Depending on your heat tolerances I've found some amazing sauces. Torchbearer, Dingo, Chilli seed bank + many others.

      • thanks guys.

  • Parmesan oil from olio Bella. Amazing for dukkah or on light pasta dishes.

  • Sriracha FOR EVERYTHING but only the American made version. Yes that means i use them on Roast pork, beef, steak, fried eggs, salad, carbonara, pizza etc etc

The Thai version isn't as good.

  • Coles nugget sauce
    and
    mixing siracha with honey

  • If you like chilli oil, I'm a big fan of this one Bondi Heat - Carolina Reaper Oil. The herby mayo from Red Rooster. Heinz Ketchup. Burger sauce. Franks. Avid hot sauce collector.

  • The Mrs put me on to Lanes BBQ Sauces (fathers day present) https://www.lanesbbq.com.au/collections/lanes-bbq-sauces/pro…
    Sensational!

  • Nandos used to have a Pepper sauce that was available in the supermarkets and was amazing on steak and pretty much anything. It was like a creamy peppercorn sauce. It was a sad day when they stopped making it. If anyone is familiar and can recommend a similar sauce I would be very grateful, I’ve tried a few pepper steak sauces since and none have been close to as good as the nandos one, and I’m hanging out for a replacement.
