Base install is pretty small. All the media and messages are client side and largely uncompressed. Some of my friends have 40-50 GB of storage used by WeChat mostly from group chats etc.
If you're dumb enough to use WeChat then the phone storage is the least of your problems

The 12 is better for your circumstance, as it's far lighter in the hand, which makes it much more usable. It's also easier to hold due to the flat sides and being narrower. The screen is much more readable and brighter. That and it's 2 generations newer.
