Prepaid Plans for My Dad

Hi OZB community

My Dad is in need of advice for what prepaid plan he should be on. He is currently with Telstra and is a bit old fashioned so wants to remain with them, but the recharge options they are providing him with are ordinary, e.g. $50 for 90 days but they would charge $0.12c per text and $0.07c per MB. He doesn’t use the phone a lot but just wants to be able to ring/text and use data without going over his allowances etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Benny

Allowances for calls and sms? What decade are we in?

Get him a Telstra MVNO so he has the service but not the cost. Aldi, Woolworths or something like that.

Boost Mobile uses the full Telstra network & Belong mobile uses the Telstra wholesale network.

Either one will be cheaper than Telstra.

Even Telstra 6 month or 12 month prepaid is probably better than what he has at the moment…
      That's what I'm using for now…

If you were to buy a Belong starter pack for $45 & stay for 12 months it would cost $190.00 with 125GB based on Option 1 in my link.
If you can wait for it to go on sale again at half price then it comes down to $167.50.

The cheapest monthly plan is $15 after the 1st month.

Aldi $99 a year 15gb should be plenty if your dad doesnt use data? Or if no data at all dodo $5 month?

What service is he on per month? Seems to me he is paying more than most. Charging for SMS and per mb of data…. as some have said it is 2021, most plans will have unlimited sms & calls and a very small amount of data.

Telstra direct in general is pricier compared to the other big providers (optus, voda). As some have already said why doesn't he switch to Boost (full telstra) or Woolies or Aldi as they use wholesale Telstra network. Might as well save some $$

I got my parents onto Boost and they are good value.

  • Did he ever join Telstra Plus, and has been receiving points for the money he's thrown at Telstra? If so…..

If not, but he's vaccinated (or soon will be)…..

This assumes that he only needs Telstra wholesale coverage, and will give him up to 6 months (by using a referral) on Belong. After that, Aldi or Woolworths ($150 / 12 months, or $65 / 180 days if he doesn't need much data), as others have already suggested. If he shops at Woolworths, there's 10% off one grocery shop per month to be had, which can offset the cost. This is pretty much what I'm intending to do with my own Telstra pre-paid service, once my current 12 months end (although I have an Optus and a Vodafone starter pack to use first).

If he needs the full geographical Telstra coverage, then Boost, as others have already suggested too. The $200 / 12 month packs often pop up on OzBargain for around $160 or so.

Get Boost. Tell him it's own by Telecom Australia.

  • Thanks so much to everyone for this info. I think switching to belong or boost etc is the way to go by reading all the above.

Is it possible to keep his same number if he switches over or how does that work? Sorry it’s new to me as well. I am even thinking of switching over now! Lol

    • I think going from telstra to belong etc you may have to port out to a different provider first…. it is pretty quick
