Anyone else feel the earthquake just now? Felt it in Melbourne.

Not to be outdone by her southern counterparts, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has called a crisis meeting of Cabinet and is instructing workers to detonate the entire arsenal of Sydney Harbour NYE fireworks under the city to generate a 6.1 Richter scale earthquake.

    • He’s going to lock down hard so Melbourne doesn’t have one of those long, drawn-out NSW style earthquakes :)

  • OMG WTF earthquake in melbourne?

    • I know right. What else could go wrong for us!

      The timing is certainly suspicious.

The day after a Melbourne anti-lockdown/vaccine mandate protest achieved probably the movement's most significant victory thus far since large-scale protests started last year and a group of ragtag tradies effectively shutdown a city with impunity and managed to outwit a disorganised police response for an entire day (and embarrass Melbourne's riot police), Melbourne is hit by the most significant earthquake in 200 years. Just as the broader protest movement in Victoria was evolving to become far more organised and far more persistent in their appearances and had successfully eluded the enormous police dragnet setup to prevent their movements, and Victoria Police were resorting to more and more overtly violent, aggressive and tyrannical behaviour to curb the protests (including I believe the first confirmed death of a protestor; the 70-year old woman who was violently assaulted and pepper sprayed on 18/09).

They're already warning of "aftershocks" persisting for months now. Sounds like a great ploy to keep people off the streets when you no longer can beat them toe-to-toe.

        • +1

          It must be a cohencidence!

      • -1

        Lol victory.
        Lol tradies.

Flogs and losers is what they are.

        • So what's your idea of victory look like?

Bending over and asking for the Vaseline? Go lick boot somewhere else, I'm not interested in what you have to say.

  • +4

Remember people, there's only five reasons to leave home! 😜

  • And in all of these comments no-one thought about a potential tsunami

    • +1

News for you Bud long time ago it was reported no tsunami threat !

      • -1

Yes, and for a period of time leading up to that announcement, there was a likelihood.

  • +1

Waiting for Gladyz and Brad show to tell everyone they did it better than Dan

  • It was scary. I initially thought my neighbour was doing something weird… I heard the walls banging… Then I thought there was a very noisy and careless thief inside… 😂

We've had enough tragedies for the decade. Further events shouldn't be allowed before 2030.

    • get those saucony shoes out and run

      • Haven't been delivered yet… 😑

        • oh well i'm still waiting over two weeks for my Tefal Air fryer and some cutlery.

          • @sammyla: Update: delivered today.

I could now run but they say we shouldn't run during earthquakes. I'd just wear my comfortable Saucony and hide under the table.

            • @this is us: Haha would be cool to run when earth is moving under your feet.

  • Had a dream last night about an earthquake and then a tsunami. Still waiting for the tsunami.

    • +4

if you dream about Powerball can we get a group entry please?

      • Absolutely!
Ironically when I was in Tokyo a few years back I had a similar dream, only to have been told in the morning an actual earthquake had happened haha.

        • +1

Best thing I've ever eaten in my life!

                • @iNeed2Pee: Yesss I did!!!! did you try the oyster buns in miyajima island? And how cool is the tori gate at low tide…..

                  • +1

                    @sammyla: YES!!! So good!
I didn't see it at low tide but I did go on a small row boat with a few others and got to touch it up close when it was still deep!

I had a dream that I was defrauded of 1/2 mil and I ending up in some debauchery club with what like looked ghosts and I woke up with a `^“ one .

  • +4

Why would Daniel Andrews do this

    • Too keep the rioters home obviously

      • +2

They wouldnt be smart enough to realize it

    • to keep Tradies away from wife bashing union boss of course.

    • Are you giving him too much credit?

      • +6

No, it's the Dan Andreas fault…

        • I see what you did there

        • +2

As long as jv is alright . That is all that matters .

        • Oof!

        • That could possibly be your best joke yet. Gonna be hard to top.

      • no he was going to get some credit from china, didn't go ahead, i'm talking about line of credit by the way lol

  • In Northern suburbs of Melbourne, we definitely felt it very strongly. It shook the house for about 30 seconds, with smaller tremors tapering off after about another 10 seconds.

  • +2

Looks like they might need construction workers to fix the damage.

    • +1

It’s not like the industry is clos- oh wait

    • Only if they are vaccinated…

      • +3

I liked some guys suggestion that the Riot Police should shoot the Protestors with the vaccination .

    • If they'd done a good job in the first place…

Put earthquakes on the list of things I do NOT LIKE. At all. House rumbled and shook to the point I was "i'm outta here".

And strangely ever since, our internet has been terrible.

  • I feel the earth, move, under my feet.

  • +8

I live 14 stories up in Melbourne. It felt like the entire building was a jumping castle and the cracking noises were intense. I didn't even put on shoes or take my phone I was out the door that fast and down the fire escape screaming at the top of my lungs for people to evacuate.

After about 30 minutes I went back up to quickly put together a bug out bag, put on clothes + shoes then spent hours driving around thinking that by the time I come back, the building would have collapsed.

I'm now back in my apartment and on Ozbargain like nothing happened.

    • Yeah it can be pretty intense to people who are not used to it. It feels very unearthly and unnatural, makes you feel very small and vulnerable.

    • -7

Jeez I wonder how you would go with severe turbulence on a plane ?

      • +2

Are you seriously having a dig at me? Never in my life would I expect a 20 story apartment complex to bounce around. On a plane it's to be expected. What a pathetic perspective for you to have, let alone write it to me, after I shared how I experienced it.

Maybe karma will give you some perspective soon and you'll experience a moment where you feel an intense need to act instantly to save your own life - only for others to berate you for it.

        • -5

Sorry m8 you aren't cool the way you behaved .
(profanity) Panic Merchant worrying other people as well .

          • @popsiee: I hope you find the peace and love you desperately need in your life.

            • -5

@studentl0an: Not from here with Zero Hero's .

              • @popsiee: I'm sorry you don't have any people to look up to either. I hope you find that too.

    • LOL!

    • +1

I had a similar experience. No cracking noises in my apartment, thankfully!!

But on level 20, it was honestly frightening. Like those news crews, my first thought was that there might be some kind of structural problem.

I stood up and ran to my door, but hesitated, realising that if the building was moving this much already (due to structural fault) I'd be buried in rubble well before I got the the bottom. Was very relieved when I realised it was an earthquake.

My least favourite part was the slight swaying of the building for 20-30 seconds after the quake itself had finished … eek!

    • +1

Im was pretty scary in my house, being in an apartment building would not have been fun.

  • Hey there, I am in Sydney. I didn't feel anything. How about the people in Sydney? My colleague said he felt it…We're in ?Botany and mentioned same with Cronulla? O.o? I call BS.

  • Missed to feel it in 2012 as i was in theatre, glad i felt this time

  • Victoria is doomed 😷

  • Yeh I was in the kitchen and the roof started shaking mildly so I went outside to get away. Then later read you're not meant to go outside, but I lived to write about it and am now the owner of one of the lamest survival stories.

  • +5

Once again Victoria cements itself as the events capital of Australia.

    • +3

Asteroid strike tomorrow morning if you can be bothered getting up early enough…

      • +1

No doubt it will be cloudy so you won't even see it coming.

  • +1

Sadly this incident has demonstrated my husband and I's strengths and weaknesses perfectly. He came running in ready to rescue me and the baby. I got woken up, enjoyed the intense rumbling (or froze in disbelief…) and promptly went back to sleep again, missing any aftershocks.

  • +1

Yes, I was in the kitchen when in happened. But it didn't feel like the floor was shaking. It seemed like someone or something big was jumping on our roof.
My daughters were in livingroom and said the chandeliers were shaking. While our housemate, who was in his car, thought someone was shaking his car.

  • Melbourne doesn't like change, well it's true Melbourne isn't s police state.

  • was in the shower at the time and it was so loud (even over my bathroom radio)…very unnerving sensation

  • +2

Imagine all the tradie lives Dan Andrews saved by keeping them home/rioting instead of being up on a ladder when the earthquake hit #istandwithdan

  • +2

As someone born and grew up in Japan, this type of earthquake was a monthly occurrence

    • Is it something you just get used to, or does it still freak you out every time

      • It took me a bit to realise it was an earthquake when it happened this week but the first thing I worried about was a possibility of tsunami

  • The earthquake was not felt much

    No protester casualties noted.

Keep going Mellies, go go go!

  • anyone feel another one last night around 11:30?

  • -1

Surprised local QAnon hasn't claimed it was caused by construction workers blowing up a DUMB* (filled w pedo tunnels)

    *(Deep Underground Military Base)

    • +1

On a previous page there's a reference to Angels don't play this HAARP.

It seems like a fascinating read either way.

  • Victorian 2021 earthquake caused by hidden fault in the Earth's crust, researchers say

No mention if this hidden fault will be known as the Dan Andreas Fault as suggested by JV.
