    Pulled the trigger, less then half the price of an s21 and couldn't justify that much for a phone anymore.

    Upgrading from an S7, thought it was about time. Other then a custom ROM any other tips?

      What is a custom ROM and how do you install it? I have the poco f1 but ordered the f3 and the ads/bloatware are slightly annoying.

        Yeah that's that I'm going to try, apparently I have to also use DisplayView Presenter app to get it to work. Just waiting on the phone to arrive to test it out.

    Noob question: do you get OTA updates with custom roms, or do you have to get updates via physically connecting the phone to a computer (a Mac, in my case)?
    Also, do you still get access to the Google Play store?

      It depends on the ROM. I use Pixel Experience and I get OTA updates and Play Store access.

      One problem with the custom ROMs is that there is an ongoing "cat and mouse" around Google Pay (NFC payments) support. If Google catches on that you are using a phone with a custom ROM it might disable Google Pay. Usually the ROM developers will patch this pretty quickly…until Google catches on again.

        Thanks for sharing. Is the Google pay cat and mouse issue the results of OTA updates or Google play updates? If you disable them are you guaranteed to have a working Google pay /nfc payment?

    This is a great phone. I was going to wait for the new Pixel but went for this one after my S8 broke.

    I can't find another phone on the market with specs that compete with this one in the mid to low price range.

    I flashed the Pixel Experience ROM on this phone because the Xiamoi MIUI UI that ships with it is full of spyware and generally awful. Flashing a custom ROM is a fairly easy process that everyone should consider if they buy this.

    Edit: The Pixel Experience ROM also comes with the unlimited Google photo storage deal (at least until Google catches on ;))

        First of all, you need to create a Miui account and register your phone with it.

        Then go to the Miui Unlock page, download the unlock program, connect up your device and from there unlocking the bootloader should be straight forward. But you will probably be told you need to reconnect the phone in 7 days to finish the unlock process.

        When the bootloader is unlocked it will wipe your phone clean.

        Once the bootloader is unlocked you can download the Pixel Experience ROM from here. There is a tutorial somewhere on that site.

        All of this should work for the X3 too.

          There's a glitch with the website defaulting to express shipping for certain postcodes. If you can't select free shipping from the drop down menu at checkout then it's not available for your postcode.

          You could try editing or re-entering your address, that has fixed it for some.
