      it doesn't XD

      Consider it nonexistent.

  • Thanks OP. I am currently looking at a tablet for about $650 and was aware Android tablets being worse choice than a iPad. This makes things more interesting.

The long waited Xiaomi Pad 5 is out and packed with features bla bla…and spying malware as a bonus.
The Litva’s Ministry of Defence and its national cyber security has annouced the findings of spyware preinstalled on Xiaomi devices which can be remotely controlled, censoring contents and collecting user data….

    • +3

You mean the dispute between Lithuania and China where the so called spyware was revealed to be an adblocker since it's clearly more about attacking China than properly analysing the facts.

They need better techs in their cyber security department.

Unfortunately Clear, some people are just sheep that eat up media sensationalism.

        • +3

That's very true. A lot of people around here know I'm not one to give up so easily when people are misinformed ;)

      • Good sleuthing. Yeah, you could see it was just another anti-China story, which the US media (and Australian offshoots) are always keen to regurgitate. Scary, really, just how easy it is to sell propaganda.

        • Might be worth looking into the whole story. The CCP, as usual, starting shit then trying to play victim.

      • Actually, it's about China having a histrionic hissy fit, compete with nonsensical sanctions, because Lithuania dared talk to Taiwan.

  • Has anyone noticed that the prices of goods on Aliexpress has become a bit high in general? I often see the same items on Banggood for less or same price with free shipping.

    • Yes. AliExpress requires sellers to have use shipping methods that have tracking, because during COVID untracked mail like China Post was taking 6 months to arrive. When Chinese stores have "free shipping" it's not really free. Rather they incorporate that into the price, so for a lot AliExpress sellers they've increased prices to cover the tracked shipping.

    • Aliexpress also adds GST while some Chinese websites leave it up to the buyer to pay relevant duties … or not ;)

  • Off topic - but what is the current premium Android tablet in the 7-8inch range
I have a Mi pad 4 which works fine but I prefer the old Nexus 7 form factor
    Any recommendations appreciated

    • Nexus 7 form factor was near perfect.

      • it was wasn't it - why the heck can't someone put a modern screen and SOC on a similar tablet - they would sell out!

        • There is a weird stigma i feel on wanting to try something new every time in tech that makes a lot of stuff like this get missed or overlooked.

That and there is definitely a huge weird disconnect between the people in charge of making the design and the actual users.

I think the architects and designers are like complete abstract artists in soul and spirit so out of touch with the world and their product they are just savants up in their own world fully detached from reality.

Yeah they really need a guy to like tell those people what actually works or what is good because they are missing so many blockbuster ideas and combos that we consumers see so clearly like night and day.

          TL;DR huge disconnect

  • Nice specs but for my next tablet purchase if i even buy another one it has to be 8 inches or lower size for me with 7 inches the target maybe even 6.5 inches.

Hard to go larger than 8 inches after having used multiple devices in that area.

10 to 11 inches while lying down in bed is quite large he he good if you want to train your arm muscles though.

7 inches for me is the sweet spot for two handed landscape usage and weight would be awesome also at 7 inches I feel.

    • nvidia shield tab (needed more ram but loved the design and feel, ended up rage destroying it one day when the low ram put me over the edge)
    • huawei mediapad m3 8.4 (gaming performance felt worse than the s2 at times and constant ram issues even though it had the most ram at 4gb, ran into battery issues after few years of daily usage)
    • samsung galaxy tab s2 8.0 (so light but it is well made in all regards.. only downside is the age.. for 3gb of ram it has no ram issues like apps randomly closing or freezing compared to the Huawei so better overall software design maybe for the samsung)
    • I am kinda tempted to grab iPad Mini 6 for that reason. I'd genuinely prefer if Samsung makes an 8 inch tablet though :P

      • Iirc the ipad mini feels more square in shape than rectangular.. That is a weird form factor if my memory serves me well.

        • Ohhh so you prefer 16:10 over say 14:9 screen ratio. Fair fair. I think both has trade offs here and there (iPad is better for say documents, because it's closer to the ratio that papers have, but you'd have letterbox for most of the videos).

@iridiumstem: I mean ultimately the one that fits best in my hand wins.

            So size I guess.

It does feel a bit odd though going from one ratio to another but tbh the rectangle shape is a little odd also.

I wouldn't mind maybe something on the middle.

            Or just smaller.

Yeah for work and business stuff I can the other factor being much better.

            • @AlienC: Now I think I am seeing where you are coming from. Sorry, it kinda clicked now.

Since Android tablets are basically enlarged smartphones in terms of its screen ratio, it is narrower and thus easier to hold.

Kinda reminded me of the whole rumours with Tab S8 Ultra which sounds ridiculously big (14.6 inch), but in reality it's just same height as a iPad Pro 12.9 but wider.

  • iPad is better?

    • Yes and no. Though I have an iPad pro 12.9 inch, which is the perfect size (A4 screen) for magazines and good for newspapers, which I use it for extensively. Alas, I bought the wifi version in a rush chasing a discount, and it doesn't have GPS. Seriously, what tablet doesn't have GPS? And it cost one and half grand! Apart from that, great hardware, but the software is limiting if you are used to Android. IOS is so locked down, so many things I can't do, so many apps I can't run. I wanted it mostly for an e-reader/browser at home - it's the best for that - and a replacement computer/entertainment device on the road, but it falls short there. Depends what you want it for and how much you want to spend. The Xiaomi is definitely better value but may not suit your needs.
