iPad Family Sharing Back Ups and iOS Update

Having fixed wife's ipad from getting the apple loop screen and giving up a while ago,i was able to sort it out thanks to some help from guy on here.
Wife is worlds worst once i set it up again her icloud was full so i purchased the 50gb plan.
The other reason behind this as wife had been using daughters ipad she used up the memory on her ipad with pics and vids of kids.
So plan was to share with mums icloud with family sharing.
Daughters ipad lol not been backed up 108 weeks obviously she ever sort it out or told me and ipad wants to update ios.

Daughters device needed backed up which im having issues doing its failing to back up?
Have i set up family sharing ok?

Also the other issue is as its run out of storage on ipad i cant update ios as not enough memory left.

Im thinking if im able to back up stuff from daughters ipad then I be able to update ios?

This what was happening first or should I say what i was seeing.

When i click on ok on the ipad not backed up then up pops up.
Ipad storage full…. you can free up space on this ipad by managing your storage in settings.

When i do this the ipad storage says 31.9gb of 32gb used.

So obviously cant update ios.

I know 15.89gb of this is photos and vids of kids.

How do i share or move this to wifes family icloud which daughter is connected to?

Weird thing is on the ipad storage general page on the part below review large attachments the icloud photos has a circle of 1%? And next to that it says automatically upload and safely store all your photos and videos in icloud so you can browse, search and share from any of your devices.

Clicking on this does nothing.

My issue here is how i move stuff from daughters ipad which wife had been using a lot while her one was not working.
As i got wife's ipad up and going again and set up icloud plus as even wife's then ipad was full.
I set up the sharing thing but im confused how to get the stuff on icloud.

Trying the icloud back up on the ipad gets to a point of about 1min remaining then judt cuts off each time.

So what now? I cant seem to back up for whatever reason and obviously i think I need to do that to then be able to update ios.

Im thinking backup to icloud maybe allows me to ipdate ios once done or do i still have to delete all from ipad or should i need to?

Not sure what's going on with the icloud back up

Once i get the icloud back up part sorted and say ios, is the ipad storage on device always there or does this move to icloud and free up device storage?

Another thing when using family sharing does the purchase section need to be shared or can daughter still share mums icloud without the payment sharing option.
As i rather not let daughter have access to payment part of sharing, yes there is ways to open daughter an account with a child id and to use alert to buy.
But as daughter has already a apple id with her own on email obviously used by us i rather we just used that.
Im just curious if payment sharing needs to be working to share mums icloud which im sure it aint a problem as said i rather keep payment sharing out of it.

Anyway very long post this, it be great to sort out daughters ipad then i can do few things with wife's ipad before i then set up wife's ipad to her new iPhone.

Nice mind dump, really needs a TLDR!

First things first, back up all the ipads to your computer: https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT203977

Then you can safely remove whatever's taking up the space and apply the update.

Another thing when using family sharing does the purchase section need to be shared or can daughter still share mums icloud without the payment sharing option.

Can use mum's icloud account to install apps, although mum/you may need to manually log in and out of the account to ensure that daughter doesn't have mum's account's password. Much better to set up family sharing properly now (as in, daughter's account is a member of the family account) - may as well bite the bullet and set it up as Apple prefers you to, to stop future pain.

    • Someone with some helpful info will look into back ups to pc, dont know why is not happening on ipad though.

I not be able to do this maybe till tonight but how will i know its safety backed up to pc and works or is saved prior to deleting space from ipad.
I would hate to delete 16gh of kids vids and pics to then find its not backed up on pc.

I take as im having issues backing up on the ipad and say i back up to pc and all is ok, is this the method you need to delete storage from ipad to get free space.
If the ipad back up been done on ipad would this still be the case and device needs to be deleted or does this lower as backed up in icloud.

But yes i understand getting the back up is first thing so then i can free up space to update ios.

But one thing saving a back up say on pc of daughters ipad how do i then share that to family as it will be backed up to pc?

Daughter does not have mums account passwords etc on her ipad in fact daughter will not be using her one, the problem before was as wife's ipad was not working she just used daughters one.

All im looking for is to family share icloud of mums and I believe this works without any payment sharing?
Daughters appleid is now sharing with mum so should not be an issue if no payment sharing is set up, i did to start with payment sharing until noticed it wanted new id for daughter etc.
Daughter already has apple id, but never even knew there was kids ones to begin with.

We have never had any payment details on devices but as i purchased icloud storage then it be on mums device for paying this not daughters.

    Possibly.

Did you stop for even a second to proof read this?

  • I would pull the photos off to a computer, either through backup as somebody mentioned, or just pull the flat files across (if on Windows…plug the iPad in and view the images like any other portable drive, or if on Mac you might need to use the camera). Once done, then you know you can delete them from the iPad but still be able to recover if necessary.

As for Family Sharing, go into your iCloud family sharing settings and check that your daughter's iPad appears. If it's not there, then invite again.

If your daughter's iPad is not picking up Family Sharing, then log out of Apple/iCloud on her device, and log back in again.

The linking and syncing with Apple is atrocious sometimes. When it all works it is great, but sometimes things seem to get into a bit of a jam.

    • Family sharing works daughter is on there, its the back up to icloud not been done on device in 108 weeks lol.

And just fails to back up using the ipad.

The suggestion here was to back up to a pc which i can look into and thenci can free up space for ios update.
I was just curious if ipad had backed up on the device to icloud would it have freed up space on device or is this something that's done manually?

I understand back up to pc would mean free up space on ipad manually but was just curious if same goes if ipad backed up if you still had to manually delete.

I did ask this futher above in another reply but once backed up on a pc and i know it's been done right and i free up ipad device storage to allow ios update.
How do i then get the saved back up to pc to ipad again and using wife's/shared icloud.

      • depending on where you live and lockdown status, it may be best to drop by a apple store and talk to staff re what you can do or not, they deal with these things daily and would give the clearest best advice?

      • You may need to go into the iCloud settings and see what's configured for Photos (Apple ID -> iCloud -> Photos). There's an option in there to 'Optimise iPad Storage'…this is supposed to put the full size images up into iCloud, and keep only smaller res versions on the iPad itself.

My iPad currently shows my family using 22GB odd for Photos in the cloud. The iPad itself reports less than a gig locally for Photos. That might be an indication that Photo storage optimisation is working.

I don't tend to take photos from my iPad much, but I do often put photos from my 'real' cameras onto it.

      • If your wife has been using daughter's iPad, import the wife's photos to the PC and then upload it onto your wife's own iCloud Photos account (https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT205323).

Then delete those photos from the iPad, I'd imagine it would free up enough space to upgrade iOS and hopefully complete a full iCloud backup. You should also do a backup to PC once in a while even though you've got set and forget iCloud backups.

You can never have enough backups.

        • I’m not sure what happened but was trying trying to get daughters iPad to connect with pc and was having issues, it kept coming up with wife’s iPod to set up new device etc with her email.

To add to the fun of this whole iPad saga my laptop is over 10 years old and working windows 7 and I have latest iTunes.
And does the job but not ideal.

I have recently purchased a new laptop which I need to set up and I have a new desktop pc coming in a few weeks also 10 yrs old and not working.

When I’m set up on both these devices I probably back up copy stuff properly and save stuff to a hard drive.

In the mean time I did use this method from a guy who helped me in past. I even had issues scrolling down to select all pics and never knew about shift key lol.

Of you’re on a PC, you should be able to simply do a drag selection as you scroll down through the photos. Or click the first photo, scroll to the bottom and hold SHIFT and click the last one. That should select them all.

Then, with everything selected, just click the cloud icon ☁️ At the top right off the screen, and click download all.

I now have zip files on pc saved.

My question is I tried to update daughters iPad but still fails, there is a few gb spare so not sure why it’s not updating. Maybe needs to be over 50% charged?
Or I need to delete some stuff.

Knowing I have seen daughters iPad backed up now and sharing wife’s iCloud I’m safe to say that if I delete stuff from iPad memory they are safe in iCloud, and yes even though I have got the stuff in zip files.

All I need to know is what I’m deleting from iPad storage which is or seems to be backed up in iCloud now I’m all good.

I’m going to try and delete stuff from iPad pics and vids and see how the iOS update goes then.

My last question is I watched a vid on you tube from few years ago where a guy stored heaps on iCloud, but could not work out a way to get his stuff in they right resolution etc
iif a pic was high resolution and he downloaded it from iCloud it be low resolution same went for vids.
He was told about third party software to do this and someone told him it’s in iCloud all along on the iCloud symbol on the right there was this little arrow which allowed you to download your stuff and whatever resolution etc you took it.
And not cut down by iCloud I’m just curious if apple took this feature away.
As when I’m set up on new desktop pc and laptop I’m hoping to download these later at it’s right resolution etc and save to hard drive just curious if you know about this feature or if others do.

          • @bwatt72:

My question is I tried to update daughters iPad but still fails

Are you trying to update via itunes connected to the pc or stand alone?

            • @randomusername2017: As ipad seems to be backed up on devive now the ipad will not update the ios.
It was mentioned that once i see my stuff backed up to icloud i can delete pics etc from ipad storage but it says when i do this it's deleted from icloud?
The ipad is still showing like 28gb of stuff with only 32gb in total and its the 14.08 update whifh im sure is in mb.
But it gets to last second and fails.
Tried few times and same each time.
I know the stuff is saved to icloud it's trying to get the update now but don't understand why it's not updating ios.

I had tried connecting to iTunes earlier to try and do the icloud thing and noticed on ipad it was done not by me must have done so prior.
Had issues getting ipad to connect with itunes and decided to log on to icloud and download pics and vids to pc that way as back up.

              • @bwatt72:

Had issues getting ipad to connect with itunes

                such as?

                ..

but it says when i do this it's deleted from icloud

Settings > iCloud > Photos and turn off iCloud Photo Library - to delete only locally stored files

Go to Settings > General > Storage>enable app offload

Itunes>device>summary>check for update>update easiest way to update ios

                • @randomusername2017: iPad would not show up on iTunes.

Settings > iCloud > Photos and turn off iCloud Photo Library - to delete only locally stored files

Never knew I had to turn off iCloud Photo Library lol.

What do you mean by this?

Go to Settings > General > Storage>enable app offload

Itunes>device>summary>check for update>update easiest way to update ios

So are you saying doing the above updates iPad without iPad being connected to iTunes? I know there was some sort of update but probably for iTunes update not iPad.

I thought I pad had to be updated for iOS on the device I try this next time I get iPad.

But without deleting some stuff further on iPad there is enough to update to 14.08 not sure about iOS 15.
One iOS at a time for mr

                  • @bwatt72:

iPad would not show up on iTunes.

Ipad powered on, unlocked and on home screen?
Ensure you acknowledge the trusted device prompt on the ipad.
Try restarting Ipad while connected to itunes.
Google "dfu mode ipad" for more info.

Never knew I had to turn off iCloud Photo Library

Only if you want to delete local files- turn it back on after deleting.

Go to Settings > General > Storage>enable app offload

An option in settings that helps free up space

So are you saying doing the above updates iPad without iPad being connected to iTunes

No. Ipad needs to be connected to itunes - this way you get the full update rather than device specific incremental ota updates.

One iOS at a time for mr

You will get updated to the latest version your device supports in the one update.

                    • @randomusername2017: iPad had been powered on if you mean wall socket then no as I need to plug iPad cable into laptop, I actually thought doing so would charge an iPad but it seems it can’t.
Was unlocked and on Home Screen.
I’m sure I tried restarting iPad while connected to pc but will try this again.

I think I did a dfu mode on wife’s iPad to get it out of a apple logo loop, which I tried a year or so ago and give up but it never gave option to update only restore.

This is my daughters iPad I’m talking about which your probably aware and if I did a dfu which I believe is top button and home button together let go top button and keep home button pressed and your in dfu mode.

Should this not come up with update and not just restore like my wife’s iPad did, her one was different situation to daughters one.
As daughters iPad seems to have backed up to iCloud then if i go on a dfu mode and it only asks to restore, I will get my daughters stuff back on and any pics and vids saved to cloud.

Should we really need to go dfu and restore just to get iPad to update iOS this should work most of the time.

So just so I’m understanding right me deleting tried in nothing important said when I did delete from iCloud, so now to gain some storage and in the future I turn off iCloud Photo Library and then delete this way and it’s just deleted from iPad.
But still is in the iCloud?
I’m bit confused on this you mention turn back on after deleting so does that not then put it back on iPad again? Or just say new pics etc that are taken from there on.

Go to Settings > General > Storage>enable app offload

Will check this out I’m sure my only options was or best options was the stuff that was using most memory pics and vids which I’m happy to say are up to date in iCloud. I’m just glad I never selected all pics and vids and deleted as would have gone from cloud.

There is iOS 15 but there is also 14.8 but it is iPad 6th gen so not sure how many more there be.

I’m only one that does not use up memory and keeps things updated, I’m going to have to check there devices more regularly as what a mess.

Wife’s iPad was stuck in a loop for well over a year, had another go at it recently now up and running and still has her data.

Wife then shared daughters iPad filled that up and this was not backed up in 108 weeks and lacked updates I’m getting there slowly.

Having paid for extra cloud and set up sharing for them both will help until I can sometime take the iCloud stuff off and store on a hard drive.

And I’m not done there another older iPad son used had this stuck on loop as well.
it’s a mini but not sure what number and if still getting updates if it is then great.
It had one of those cases that you could throw them from height and and still protected but somehow he had the cover partly off we never knew and cracked screen.
If worth a screen if not still can be used as is.

Problem with that one we can’t remember what applied user name etc we used so that will be fun trying some emails.

                      • @bwatt72:

I turn off iCloud Photo Library and then delete this way and it’s just deleted from iPad.

                        Correct.
Turning it back on after deleting photos resumes cloud backup for new media.

                        iPad had been powered on

While connected to itunes, hold the power button down and slide to turn off > restart> see if itunes registers it.

                        • Ignore my comment about dfu - has the potential to wipe everything.
                        • If it's an original mini - not worth the price of a screen
                        • @randomusername2017: some good info here I try these tomorrow sometime when i get chance see how I get on.

                • @randomusername2017: Turning off icloud photo library says.

Photos and vids that have been optimised to save space will be removed from this ipad. The original full versions will be available on other device's using icloud photos.

                  Remove from ipad
                  Download photos and vids
                  Cancel

So not sure about this as i don't know what its doing i thought i did this switch off then was able to delete from storage and switch back on?

                  • @bwatt72:

                    Remove from ipad

If you have already backed them up to PC and cloud, delete locally and that should free up space required for update.
If the update is still failing, your best option is factory reset. Any purchases can be restored from iTunes store.

                    • @randomusername2017: delete locally

Not sure what you mean are you saying to remove from ipad as stated below?

Photos and vids that have been optimised to save space will be removed from this ipad. The original full versions will be available on other device's using icloud photos.

                      Remove from ipad
                      Download photos and vids
                      Cancel

And factory reset is that a restore?

Obviously i have issues with just a small 14.8 ios update as keeps failing and can't even attempt to try ios 15 as it needs 1.7gb free to even try.

                      • @bwatt72: Locally = stored on iPad

Backup data - factory reset via iTunes >update straight to latest iOS .

Generally you should be able to free up a few GB by offloading apps and clearing cached data.

                        • @randomusername2017: Yes but you said to turn off icloud photos and what pops up is what i get asking above.

So is it remove from ipad and by doing so is that meaning all? I thought i could delete what i needed.

Are these things i need to look for on itunes back up data and factory reset?

I got rid of few things and offload some apps hardly made a difference.
As for clearing cached data where do i find this and how much there might be as possible it not been done in a few years if at all.

          • -1

@bwatt72: If the remaining photos and videos on the iPad are ones you want to keep on it, and they've been uploaded to your daughter's iCloud Photos account, you shouldn't need to delete them (as that will also delete them from iCloud Photos).

Assuming the photos are uploaded to iCloud Photos, you'll want to check in Settings > Photos that the Optimise iPad Storage option is selected and not Download and Keep Originals. It should be the default but it will remove the full versions of photos from the iPad as storage requires and redownload them when you look at them.

What you can also do is go to Settings > General > iPad Storage and choose the larger third party apps that are installed that haven't been used for a while and either delete them or offload them.

Deleting the app means all your files and settings for the app will also be removed, whereas offloading means the app will be removed but all your files and settings for it will stay, so when you need to use it again you just need to redownload it and you can continue where you left off.

Try to free up at least 5GB and try to update again.

EDIT: You shouldn't be updated iPhone and iPads through iTunes unless there's a problem and you can't get the update done on the devices themselves. Going through iTunes downloads and reinstalls the entire OS on top of the existing one, these days it's about 5GB.

With minor updates like 14.8, depending on what version you're currently on, installing through the device itself will usually just download what's known as a delta update, only the parts that have changed since your current OS version. These updates can be 100MB or less all the way up to a couple GB.

            • @lint: If the remaining photos and videos on the iPad are ones you want to keep on it, and they've been uploaded to your daughter's iCloud Photos account, you shouldn't need to delete them (as that will also delete them from iCloud Photos

I thought i needed to delete space from ipad storage and to do so after its backed up in icloud they can do so.
Another poster above said when i delete pics i need to switch icloud off delete and switch back on.
I tried a random screenshot prior day or so ago and it said it was deleting from icloud and i never knew i had to turn off icloud to do this.
By the way daughter is sharing wife's icloud by family sharing.

Im not sure what you mean on this.

I know daughter and wife are sharing 50gb cloud on family sharing and in pretty sure both devices are backed up wife might need ios 15 which I not done yet but issues are from daughters not able to update ios 14.8 which seems minimal mb to update. Ios 15 is different matter as thats like 2gb.
But the 14.8 fails each time.
Yet it seems ipad storage space is pretty full yet backed up to icloud?
So obviously need to reduce ipad space on ipad.
Im not sure why ipad space would be so full if pics and vids for example are backed up in icloud andci asked the question does ipad storage need to be freed up?
I tried as said to delete a screenshot just to see what happened and it said deleted from cloud.
Down the line i probably open another thread but once i sort these ipads out, icloud etc i might want to save everything from all ipads in house and save any pics and vids to a hard drive and free them all up but not grab them in smaller less quality but from orginally how they was taken.
But that's another subject im overloaded why info just trying to do what im trying.

Going through iTunes downloads and reinstalls the entire OS on top of the existing one, these days it's about 5GB.

I would not want that, so something is stopping me update through ipad so must be storage or something.

              • @bwatt72:

Im not sure what you mean on this.

If you have the Optimise iPad Storage option selected, your iPad will delete photos and videos from your iPad automatically if it requires space and will just keep the thumbnails for them.

                • @lint: I have offloaded apps i have deleted a lot of pics from icloud silly ones and daft things kids add and some other random stuff.

But it's hardly done anything the biggest on is the icloud photos which is 14.18gb.
In the ipad storage it says there is 30.5gb of 32gb used.
Where is all the memory being used up from? This is on ipad storage.

If i go onto Apple id and cloud it says 28.1gb of 50gb used which could be both wife's and daughters as it's shared.
But i don't get why im struggling to get memory back on ipad.

I see the 14.8 update does not seem to be an option anymore to update but still shows but the ios 15 is one that can be done but needs.
1.7gb at least tried it there and says too much storage to update.

May be so, but not a very good story teller, mate! Though with some proof reading, you'll be legendary.

  • In case it helps people understand the OP's post/read less of a wall of text, here's the same post over on Whirlpool

  • Use the Manage Storage option to manage storage. You can delete apps you don't use or delete data you don't need. Eg if anyone listens to podcasts you don't need all the podcasts they've ever listened to saved to the iPad, that data can be deleted. Will be healthy to get rid of unneeded data anyway. Plus if you want to take the time, go through and delete all similar photos. Often people take 5-10 photos of the same thing or same event. Keep the best one and delete all the dud copies.

    • Not sure what you mean by Use the Manage Storage option to manage storage

      • In Settings click on the owner's name > iCloud > manage storage

        Also, Settings > General > ipad/iphone storage.

        • Sorry I’m not sure where this is going there is iCloud storage and iPad device storage, I’m not sure if this is related to a question i asked earlier.
But once I’m able to back up the daughters iPad which looks like I have to try with pc as not happening with iPad.
My question was I then manually have to delete stuff from the iPad device in order to free up space. That’s making sure the back up was ok through pc.

I did ask if I had been able to back in up on iPad would the iPad device stuff I just backed up still need to be removed manually.

The vids and pics of kids is the main thing I want to save and therefore back is a must this has about 16gb on that alone.

I’m then able to update daughters iPad to latest iOS.

And I’m not sure if I missed the answer somewhere but if and when I backed up stuff to pc, is how then do I get this back onto iPad and shared with mums 50gb cloud.

          • +1

@bwatt72: Have you copied the files to a computer? You could then delete off ipad and then transfer back after updating

            • @Caped Baldy: Not done anything yet will try tonight so I just log into iTunes right connect iPad with cable and back up to pc ie save as a zip file? I’m sure @bdl posted early on the post about saving to pc and I will check that out then.

So then I have saved a back up to pc, I’m right in saying as everything is backed up I can delete stuff from iPad which free up space and allows me to update iOS.

After iOS is updated I then need to get the back up from pc to iPad how?
And once that’s back on iPad, then it should be easy to add this to iCloud back up??
So in other words most things is in the iCloud shared with mum and iPad has more free memory.

In fact if I could just back up pics and vids that would be enough but be as well back up all.

I did get the 50gb iCloud for wife/mum as her iPad cloud was full and now wife/ mum had used daughters iPad for a while I want to use this for daughters to free up that and to allow updates I set up family sharing for them.

The biggest problem was not being able to back up to iCloud on daughters iPad I’m not sure even why should I not be able to as just keeps failing.

I get mixed up with iPad storeage and iCloud storeage which I know are different things but does iPad storage always stay on there even when backed up meaning it will always need stuff deleted as it fills up. Or does stuff backed up to iCloud get moved from iPad storage.
iCloud says that iPad has not been back up in 108 weeks which is crazy and I’m not sure if that’s why it’s not backing up to cloud

              • @bwatt72: iPad storage is on the device itself. iCloud gets stored to a server on the internet.

You should be able to just copy photos and videos to the computer using a lightning or usb c cable.

Have a go first and report back to us.

You should have something like this on your iPad (ignore that it says iPhone)

        https://ibb.co/cgvn1xh
        https://ibb.co/309sy3N
        https://ibb.co/25XPsTj

You can go into each app and delete its data, either all the data for the app or individual things

        • Yes I get this, a lot these are apps and many I use, there are some I very rarely use but these are just small mb files.

The main thing here on the iPad would free up 16gb is kids pics and vids and after signing up to iCloud 50gb on wife’s iPad I thought it be easy after that do a back up to iCloud and I be done but not the case.

Then I thought it free up space within iPad and allow me to update iOS.

But it seems I need to connect to a pc to back up to iCloud as it’s never done so in 108 weeks.on the ipad

@bwatt72: My advice would be to spend an hour or two going through the photos and videos and deleting any that are essentially duplicates (taken at the same time as others) but not as good as the others they are the same as, and deleting things you don't need to keep like screenshots, photos of things you are listing for sale online, things like that. I think this will be easier than your other options and then you won't have to buy more iCloud storage as soon.

What percentage is apps and what percentage photos/videos?

            • +1

@Quantumcat: Pics and vids last time I looked was 16gb wife is forever taking stuff of kids so I’m sure most will be kept but I not looked on there for silly screenshots or silly random pics, even though I’m sure there be a lot of gb left over.
I have already sorted wife’s iPad out as she was full in her iPad and she did same to kids one.

I was sometime going to take everything from iCloud and iPad storeage and save on a hard drive to keep safe, so can free up ICloud and iPad storeage to low again.
I believe there was an option in iCloud you can download the pics and vids in there full and not cut down in quality. So when on a hard drive it’s the original ones that are saved.

But for now I’m just trying to sort out daughters iPad to get her on up to date and make sure what’s on there is saved.

Doing hard drive stuff can be done later

  • Offload unused apps enable what happens when I select enable it does not get rid of apps after I do this but always me to pick right?
As I have one paid app I know I not used since purchased a few weeks back and would not want to lose it. I know this offload unused apps would give 2gb plus.

Holy crap, OP. I gave up after the first paragraph.

PROTIP: Please try to condense your problem statement into 1 - 3 readable paragraphs rather than hash out your whole life story.

  • Lock your family in a small dark room until they promise to learn how to use their devices properly.

  • Buy the 200gb plan and then the problem will disappear…
until you fill it up again.
