    Hows it for PC gaming?

    • +10

No idea why you’d be downvoted for asking. Steam Deck will eventually arrive in Australia.

      • +1

        Does it run windows 10?

        https://www.steamdeck.com/en/hardware

        • +1

          It can

      • Ha, we can only hope. We still don't even have the Valve Index VR yet … and it's been out for 2 years?!

        • +1

Valve Index was available for pre-ordering about three months ago. It looks to be all sold out now.
I assume if Steam Deck does well and they are able to manufacture enough, we'll see them in Australia

    • +2

120mbs read is faster than hdd, so it's probably sufficient lol.

Amazon also has the 500gb sandisk extreme for 110 bucks if you feel like a little bit more read speed is necessary.

      • +2

108 now :) then price match office works

      • 120mbs read is faster than hdd

What about writes? Fast enough for plotting?

      • +1

Its only a Class 10 card, so slow writes (10MB/sec). Also most Mechanical HDDs these days are in the 200meg/sec range.

        • I mean, you're not using it to edit videos right? 10mbs is fine lol.

          • @Wonderfool: Even in a camera with half-decent res (most are 4k so you need U3) its gonna struggle. If you know what you're doing, It has its place of course but it (was) cheap for a reason.

            • @BargainKen: Sorry, the thread was talking about gaming.

              • @Wonderfool: Right, still will depend on the game. Be mindful of its limitations (slow mass storage).

      • Don't HDDs usually read around 180MB/s?

        • Sorry, I'm probably wrong, I'm not sure. My memory of them is that they are 5 times slower than ssd or something.

    • -2

Can this fit 10 chia plots? or only 9?

  • Nice, I was waiting on a good price on a 1tb card for the Steam Deck.

    • +2

My thought too but it’s a U1 … not that fast?

      • You might be right. I just canceled mine. I have a couple of months to find a good deal on a faster card.

      • Minimum sequential Write speed
        U1 means it's 10 MB/s; U3 means it's rated at 30 MB/s.

Too slow for 1TB SD card IMO.

  • +13

Wow, 1TB on a microSd.. impressive.. my first HDD was 850mb hahahaa

    • +14

My first HDD was 20MB. windows 3.1 barely fit on it for testing.

      • +1

        Ha! Me too!

      • Me 4 and it cost over $500 (equivalent to $5000 today).

    • +2

Same haha, so proud of my first nice HDD for my PC, an impressive 1GB!!
this is 1.000x bigger while being like 10.000x smaller

    • +2

if they can cram 1TB into the size of the fingernail of your pinky toe, then 2TB or 4TB will also be probable.

Imagine misplacing (or damaging) xx terabytes-worth of data, because of its size.

    • +1

      Ditto!

      It was a 486 DX4 100

      :)

      Fun times!

      • Mine was a Pentium 1st gen 60Mhz running windows 3.11 hahahaa

        • Was this with MMX™ Technology?

  • +2

Wow, digital switch gamer must have.

  • +3

I will patiently wait for the day when these go under $100.

  • +2

Whoa, we surely have come a long way.

  • Thanks OP bought one for my Steam Deck

    • +1

How did you order a steam deck?

    • What OS does steam deck run?

      • +2

Steam OS, modified version of arch Linux

      • +1

SteamOS which is basically debian linux. However the Steam Deck will run SteamOS - a port of arch linux as updates are faster. You can download the OS and experience it for yourself in a virtual machine.

        • +1

You could install a different OS (including Windows) but it will run best with SteamOS

how micro sd card have been growing year after year and getting cheaper.

portable HDD still at 4TB, same size and price as it how 7 years ago

    • There are bigger portable HDDs than 4tb

      • +2

        like 5tb?

        • Yes 5tb. But there are a few reasons for this.

Form factor would get bigger and be "less portable" the more storage (platters) it has, size would reduce durability as a consequence and other factors such as limitations on max watts of USB power delivery.

    • +2

It seems like the whole HDD industry (which at this stage is basically two companies) are colluding to keep prices at a profitable level so they can squeeze the last bit of profit out of spinning rust before everyone exclusively uses SSDs

    • +1

Well first of all the Sandisk Ultra has very slow write speed. For 1 terabyte it will take you over ONE DAY to of constant file transferring to fill it up. I am not exaggerating, it actually will take a few hours longer than a whole day to fill up 1tb at U1 speeds.

Second of all, the portable HDDs from 7 years ago where spinning rust, and for the same price as a portable 4tb spinning rust hard drive from 7 years ago you can get a portable spinning rust hard drive that is 10 or more terabytes. And you can actually fill it up in less than a day.

Of course, the pricey 4tb portable hard drives on the market today are SSDs running at faster than SATA speeds, not HDDs. Way faster.

      • Wait they make portable external hdds over 10gb? I usually dont have easy access to power so I've got around 8 or 4/5tb drives. Ive only seen the 8+gb ssds that are close to a grand for portable drives…figured it had something to do with usb3 pd limits or something.

  • +1

Have a 500gb in the switch already… Wonder if I would sell that used on ebay and buy these… Do people buy used micro sd cards much?

    • +1

      I personally wouldn't.

400gb and 512gb ones aren't that expensive brand new and come usually with warranty e.g. SanDisk 5 years

    • I really need to dust off the switch. Lots of interesting titles since I last turned mine on.
I've got 500gb as well but I remember it taking a good few minutes after powering it off to sort all the titles. Im sure there's been plenty of advancements in cfw too though.

Any suggestions for good stor driven games?

  • +1

From floppy disc to this. Wow

    • Still remember playing with floppy as a fidget

  • +11

RIP to everyone with a phone without SD card

  • Too slow to run things but excellent for storage.

    • That's a lot of linux ISOs.

      • -2

only 9 chia plots I think

    • Yes, carry your entire music collection with you.

    • It would be fine for Nintendo Switch.
Not sure if you'd so much storage space for it though

  • +1

Nintendo switch noob here. Do I need a big (512GB or 1TB) micro sd card for a switch? can I use /try (I haven't opened mine yet) it with a 64GB card?

    • +2

If you only play games from cartridges you don't need a large SD card. But be warned! Some physical games are just download codes, and some games have chunky updates, so you might have to do some strategic "archiving" from time to time. (archiving deletes the game data but leaves save files and the icon so you can quickly redownload)

Obviously if you want to play a lot digital games from the eshop you would want a bigger SD

    • +1

Just my humble opinion… The 64GB is way to small… I would get at least a 256GB…
I have a 512GB for the kids switch but ours runs CFW…The 1TB would be better for myself & have jumped on this deal…
      Thanks OP

      • Yes same with me. Easy full the card with cfw

    • Thanks, will buy a big micro sd card. Now I'm waiting for a decent deal.

  • Why they still make 128 GB SSD that is thousand times bigger than 1TB microSD? That baffles me.

  • Are there any dash cam brands/models in the world that will accept this size?

    Or at least 512mb?

I want days and days of recording lol

    • +2

This will wear out very quick on dash cam and not cover by warranty.

    • +2

you won't get much footage for 512 mb !! lol

      • Ha!

Did I say I wanted days and days of footage saved to the card? I meant seconds and seconds.

  • +1

Been trying to buy the 1tb via the link. It shows up at $230 and I have Amazon prime so how do I get it for $180?

    • +1

      me too :(

    • Price has reverted back…deal gone

  • Will HN price match?

    • Most likely not if sold by Amazon US

  • Anyone get a msg in their Amazon order saying item is being sent back to Amazon USA and a refund being provided?

Not sure why Amazon no longer wants to deliver, it was in transit but now shows being returned to Amazon US.

    • Mine is still tracking with delays.

  • This sucks :(

Got this below message from Amazon

    Undeliverable
Unfortunately, a problem occurred during dispatch and we had to cancel your delivery. The package is being returned and we will issue a refund within three to five business days after the return is processed. We’re very sorry for the inconvenience.

    • Mine just got delivered today.
