Price is still way off the mark for Digital

  • +15

Lowest was $20 for a physical copy at BigW.

    • +5

$9 at HN although I suspect that was a price error

    • +2

was $9 at HN but sold out quickly

      • +5

But you cant get it for $9 or $20 so whats the point.

  • This is a bargain.

  • Great price - I’m just wondering if it’s worth holding off to see if it eventually gets added to PS+

    • +6

It will eventually, or move to Sony classics type lines for about $25. But that could take a whole. $40 is totally worth it for this game.

      • Agreed, I bought it at launch and loved it. I’m just chasing a cheap digital version. Might just keep waiting.

  • +25

if you haven't played the last of us before is HIGHLY recommend you play the last of us remastered FIRST then play the last of us Part 2.

if you don't you won't be able to fully follow alot of the story, or understand why the characters are the way they are. I didn't fully enjoy part 2 as I did part 1 I still think the orginal last of us game is golden you will go on a emotional journey though.

    • +1

TLOU:R is part of the PS Collection ie free for PS5 owners

      • yep 100% so not excuse but to play it :D

    • +13

I enjoyed Part 1 it was a great game but man, part 2, it's unbelievable, the story the game play the graphics all perfect to me. I know there are a lot of critics on Part 2 mainly from those who played part 1 first and can't accept the story settings in the sequel, but I truely enjoyed part 2 ,even more than part 1. I guess dark/twisted/depressing story is just to my liking :) .

      • +4

Couldn’t agree more. It’s a shame TLOU2 copped so much flak for its story (whether deserved or not) because the mechanics, gameplay and graphics are SO unbelievably refined. It’s a technical marvel imho.

        • -1

Problem is, a lot of the flack came from the early leaks and just snowballed from there. Eventually though, when a lot of people did play the game there was a lot of praise for it.

      • +6

It's not the story settings that's the issue. It is more that characters we know from part 1 just behaved in a weird way (story wise). Basically, the story writers want things in a certain way so the characters act that way. Not just old characters, the new characters too. Also, rather coming up with a more organic way for the story flow, plot armor was used instead, often a bit too obvious.

Another minor gripe is that if you are in Neil Druckmann's good book, he simply won't write you off the story. So, instead of feeling brave about Neil's bold decisions, it ended up feeling like a double standard. Also, part 2 feels like it uses roughly the same formula as part 1, except with a revenge theme. Once again starting with someone important to the main character @!#!@#… It does get old. The ending, yeah, part 1 has that controversial issue so we thought it was great. But, if you really looked past that, both part 1 and part 2 ended with mission unaccomplished.

The graphics, animations are top notch and the attention to detail is unreal there. What most people are after is basically a bit of that in the story, just smooth the rough edges of the story. Don't write it like a TV series.

        • +8

I played pt 1 on launch, and then played 2 followed by 1 this year, and I very much disagree. I think that the characters in 2 behaved very naturally in where they were left at the end of 1, and if anything replaying 1 made me realise how faithful to characterization and logical a follow up 2 was. Both very good games and ideally played as a pair, but to me, 2 is the superior game, its emotional punches, for me, hit harder and feel more realistic and human.

          • +5

@witheredcouch: Tommy Miller behaved as expected in part 2? Just disclose details to a group of strangers who have weapons? Ellie followed behind Tommy, we get it. It is needed because we need to be playing Ellie. But, can't the writer come up with something better? Later on, in order for Ellie to go on after Abby, instead of living happily ever after, Tommy went out of character again. You think Joel would want Ellie to go through with the revenge? No right, so you think Tommy would in real life?

Realistic is actually an issue for some people. In real life, do you really expect Ellie to be alive? Plot armor was used for both Ellie and Abby a few times. We get that, but basically people were hoping it won't be so obvious.

Please don't get me wrong. We get why those things are written that way but it is hard to accept they are well written and very real.

In one part of the game, Dina even asked why they didn't kill them. Ellie replied: it doesn't matter, they screwed up. It's kinda funny. No they didn't screw up, the writers did.

            • @netsurfer: Yes, I feel Tommy's behaviours are relatively in fitting with the generous but clearly family biased person we saw in the first game. Especially regarding revenge, as for example, in the first game, despite them parting on the worst of terms, Tommy still instantly welcomed Joel back, which shows the bond he has for him, and from there it isn't a large stretch to being hellbent on revenge. But I think like most character motivations in fiction, they aren't always going to seem like the logical choice for everyone, as we would all handle every situation a little differently, so what is in character or believable will vary from person to person.

Bringing up plot armour, once again, was there really much more than the first game? Like that Joel somehow survived in the University, or how David didn't immediately kill Ellie. Most of the holes people pick in 2 also apply to the first game, which doesn't necessarily justify them, but it's not like it is a sudden slip in writing quality.

              • +2

@witheredcouch: If revenge was such a big factor to Tommy, then shouldn't it be a group of them going the first time? Anyway, it is a game and it is a fictional story. Also, there is a limitation on the technology side of things (we are talking about PS4/PS4 Pro after all). Personally, I don't see Part 1 to be as great as people think. The ending might have been a smart idea for part 1. I feel part 2 tries to milk that idea far too much.

Yes, there were also plot armours in part 1, but were they used to dodge insignificant side characters? There were probably some instances where that happened. I think part of the problem with part 2 is that it is trying to do too much (and putting players into uncomfortable situations perhaps a bit too much) resulting in some people tuning out at parts of the game.

Also, Sarah's photo… It made me think about Sarah and Joel vs Ellie and Joel and later on Jerry and Abby. 3 father and daughter relationships and you want the player to relate to the importance of Jerry and Abby's relationship quickly. The writers are certainly not taking the easy route and they also throw time jumps into the mix.

Perhaps it was the dialogue between the characters in part 1 and I hadn't played so many games back then, I didn't really question part 1 that much. The pace was slow at times for part 1, especially the first half. There are bits in part 2 which I feel…. Naughty Dog, you are showing off what your team can do / do better than others, rather than the story actually needs that.

            • @netsurfer: Problem is we don't know much about the time between the end of 1 and start of 2. For all we know, they may have met many more groups of people in the same way and nothing ever happened over those years. They probably took in a lot of people into their settlement…..

          • +2

@witheredcouch: Um… so Abby's father looks the same in part 1 vs part 2? This is Jerry Anderson in part 1:

            https://static3.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2020/…

Not a fan of part 1 and part 2 certainly didn't help. Part 2, graphics, animation is the probably the best you can get for a PS4 Pro game.

Anyway, for all your fans out there, enjoy the TV series. I guess you guys want part 3. I just want Naughty Dog to work on something new.

      • I enjoyed Part 1 it was a great game but man, part 2, it's unbelievable, the story the game play the graphics all perfect to me.

        Love love love this.

      • +2

The story in part 1 was what was appealing. In part 2,they improved many things but man they (profanity) the story. It's not about killing the main protagonist from part 1. It's about how the other characters are.

    • +3

I just couldnt get into Last of us part 1 in 2020. I watched youtube recap of the first game before playing second game. Last of us part 2 is the best game I have ever played and I have played most of the ps4 exclusives.

      • +3

Wow that's weird, you loved pt1 but couldn't get into pt1.

I remember picking up pt1 back on a whim 1 day at JB hi-fi back in the PS3 days and once playing it I was like holy crap, can't believe I nearly didn't even buy what is IMO one of the best games ever made.

        • +1

Yeah.. it is weird. I usually like third person games. Even the older ones. I played last of us part 1 for few hours and left it midway for a long time and couldnt complete it. When part 2 got released, I picked it up for $49 on release. Just didnt have patience to finish part 1 before playing part 2. So just watched multiple youtube videos to know the story and dove into part 2. I knew even if i didnt like part 2 I could sell it for more than $49. oh boy…what a ride it was. I never cared for a video game character more in my life. hell of a game. what a story. After playing it twice back to back I still want to play it again.

        • I had a friend who never played part 1 in his life. He played part 2 because of lockdown boredom and was hooked.

  • +7

Bought for $20 a year ago from Big W and still sealed ;)

    • +5

      Crack it open!

    • sell it to me !

    • +1

I had it sat sealed for ages, saw that 1 remastered was free and played that, now I am halfway through part 2. I have been gaming for a long time, these are some epic games. First time i felt that it was closer to playing through a movie than any other game.

  • +16

Just finished this last couple of days. It's a great game, great story telling narrative. Don't understand the hate.

    • +4

Seriously one of the best stories I've ever experienced in a game. Maybe the complainers just didn't like some of the 'progressive' aspects. Haters are going to hate.

      • You two make me happy. All the love.

      • +1

If you read the content of the one-star reviews, they are hilariously simple-minded. Essentially those players had a pre-conceived fairytale idea in their heads of how part 2 would play out, and they thought all the characters were supposed to be “good guys” or “bad guys”. The fact the game explores the darkest depths of the human psyche and the greyest of grey areas in storytelling was too much for their little minds to make sense of.

        • +1

Haha yeah that was my favourite part of the entire thing. Love the story and the fact that you really didn’t know who was good and bad. Just like real life, people aren’t one or the other.

          • +1

@Smol Cat: Reminds me of Clint Eastwood’s pair of films about Iwo Jima. ‘Flags of Our Fathers’ depicting the battle from an American perspective, and ‘Letters From Iwo Jima’ from a Japanese perspective.

    • -2

Some people are bigots, some just crybabys

      • +7

or they just didn't like the storyline.

nah call them bigots instead, that's clever.

        • -4

          See crybaby right here

          • +3

@mwblink86: So I'm a "crybaby" for defending people you're attacking, without using labels?

You're not too sharp are you mate?

          • +7

            @mwblink86: So your logic is:
People who dislike the game because they dislike the story = people who are bigots?

This is a repetitive attack on people who dislike the game, but lacks substance. For a summary on why many people dislike the game (predominantly because of the story), please go and watch any Youtuber's review of the game. They all go in depth in pointing out the multiple flaws of the game. Just about every independent gaming Youtube channel has pointed out the same issues.

            • -1

@m0usju1c3: My logic is just to troll people on here because its funny to see people get worked up

              • @mwblink86: Lol well played I didn't see that coming.

              • +1

@mwblink86: Run out of intelligent things to say and follow up with “I am just trolling”

        • Yea they should get back to playing COD

        • OP said "some"…so if that's not you, then why are you getting defensive about it.

    • +5

There's still some people who see the world in black and white, and didn't like the shift of storytelling regarding the 'GOOD GUY™' and 'BAD GUY™', even though there are no heroes or villains here, just nuanced perspectives.

Reminds me of people putting Walter White on a pedestal when he certainly didn't deserve it.

      • +2

The shift was a very bold choice. Certainly showcases the greyness in the world, and who you consider as protagonist or antagonist depends on your point of view and whose story you're playing.

I would intentionally kill myself at first cause it was so damn satisfying but at the end I let some of the timed cutscenes run out of time because I just didn't want either to die. [trying to be intentionally vague as to not have spoilers to those who haven't played]

In a world where so many games are bland, boring, predictable, typical good vs evil, micro-transaction filled, recycled mess, this was a breath of fresh air.

    • Yes it is an amazing game.

The hate simply came from Anti-Social Justice Warrior Social Justice Warriors making noise in the basement.

      • +3

Um, I don't quite get that argument. That doesn't make sense for people who enjoyed part 1 but dislike part 2. For people who enjoyed part 1, they would have no issue with LGBTQ. The irony is that LGBTQ group is not happy about part 2. The writers probably think they were doing something good for LGBTQ, but didn't bother checking what that group actually wants (the message the group really want to deliver to general public).

If you like Naughty Dogs games, you have issues with female leads? That makes no sense.

However, because LGBTQ parts are done so well in part 2 (organic, natural), the other parts pale in comparison for some people is a criticism which Naughty Dog should try to take in. If more time is needed to clean up the rough edges of the story or the dialogues to make it easier for more player to appreciate the story, then it is worthwhile doing.

Yes, I get why a lot of people like the unexpected, the bitterness of the story (which some people feel it's more real life like, rather than console game like). However, do bear in mind that a lot of us play games for entertainment. If we really want to experience the grim reality of life, then just stop playing games.

For those people who think they know why people dislike the part 2, make sure you are aware that most people have more issue on how the story is delivered this time around, some feel it is unlike part 1 (which is organic or at least tries to be). The dialogues between characters in part 1 is more well written to some people. The light jokes in part 1 can help temporary ease some of the bitterness and that can help people to take in the story a bit better.

Part 2 does take some players out of their comfort zone. For example, you are forced to kill dogs. So, part 2 certainly is asking more from the player so be more open minded why some people are not that happy with certain aspects of the story.

  • +4

yea.. let me know when it gets to $20
    thanks

    • +1

There’s always someone that wants it cheaper…

    • Suit yourself
      I'm jumping right in

  • It's a good price for digital.. I originally had the physical and after completing it the first time on release on my Pro, I sold it and bought the digital because I wanted to have in my collection and re-play the story on survival mode now that it's 60fps on PS5.. But I'm pretty sure the multiplayer that is Factions coming out will be free add on so it's good to have on digital to jump into an online game rather than have to put the disc in every time you want to fire up a game. The multiplayer on the first one was one of the best multiplayers and got a lot of praise.. The multiplayer for this one is going to be good, don't skip on it when it releases, they have spent ages working on it and production quality will be top tier just like the game.

    • Did your save carry over from physical to digital?

      • I have not even loaded the digital up yet.. But there should not be an issue it's PS4 version to PS4 Version. That's only an issue from PS4 to PS5 version games.

  • +6

Ah yes 2021, where if you don’t agree with the universal acclaim; you must be a bigot or a hater.
For me, this and FFVII Remake are the two most overrated gaming experiences of the PS4 era.

IMHO, Narratives that push ideological agendas, without nuance or exploration of the “other” side of the discussion, are the bane of modern storytelling.

    For example -
Why in a world with established moment to moment lethality, (based on tried and true zombie mythology), is their one character in the game who can “fisticuff” their way through without fear of reprisal?

Just one of the many plot holes in a game riddled with them…

Granted, not all the hate is justified but I encourage people to play the game for themselves and form their own opinions. It’s OK to love it just, as it is to hate it. Try not to buy into the hyperbole of either side.

      • +10

"Granted, not all the hate is justified but I encourage people to play the game for themselves and form their own opinions. It’s OK to love it just, as it is to hate it. Try not to buy into the hyperbole of either side."

        vs

        "Omg shut up man"
        "take your tears to Reddit"

I wonder who is the unhinged one here?

    • +5

But to be fair, whether you hate it or love it, the game got so much unprecedented hate than arguably any other game. Most of the hate was unwarranted. So in this case people complaining about this game 'are' usually bigots or haters. Story is subjective, it's perfectly understandable to hate the story but the production quality of the game in the industry is top tier.

Most games and movies have plotholes so why is it so unacceptable here? It's a fictional story, the very definition of fiction is based on something that is untrue, fabricated and sometimes does not make sense. Your argument comes back to your hate for the story and trying to justify why you don't like it.

      • +3

There is a lot to unpack here without going into spoiler territory but here’s a link to a well researched analysis of the game.

        https://youtu.be/MvTFF-E5wkw

Many observations of my own overlap with this piece.

I agree with you that story is inherently subjective.
The issue then for me is about the telling of a said story including the character arc/s, themes, pacing - to name but a few.

The idea of “poor character verisimilitude” rings true for me in the video breakdown.

      • +3

It's fine if you love the story and we get it. However, don't assume you know the other side if you don't try to understand it.

In retro replay for Uncharted 2, Amy Hennig was a guest in one of the episodes. She mentioned that Neil's ideas/writings can be too dark and Bruce can go over the top being funny. Troy Baker (voice actor, mo cap actor for Joel Miller) said he knows exactly what she means. She tries to balance things out. Part 1 was written by Neil and Bruce. Part 2 is mostly Neil. So, it is expected to be darker.

The graphics and video animation improvement in part 2 is significant and does attract players. It also uses more outdoor areas (in gaming, indoor, dark areas are harder to really show off graphics due to limited light sources). Part 1 does also drag, especially earlier on and it is the latter half that makes Part 1 great, but you do have to go through the first half which basically try to give you time to bond with the characters. However, it can be too long for a lot of people.

The main issue with Part 2 story is it is too easy to tune out of it at times for some people. Perhaps the co-writer is a TV series writer has something to do with it. It's quite unbalanced because the LGBTQ part was written so well (organic and attention to detail) and with a key set piece in it, it really makes you wonder why the rest of the story didn't get the same treatment.

Part 2 story was slightly re-written after the initial testing by some selected testers. They didn't enjoy the story. The main issue they had is the same issue what most people dislike the story. Obviously, Naughty Dog (Neil) did try to change it a bit.

It's totally fine for people to love it. No issue with that. Just don't go people who hate it are wrong. Troy Baker, before the game release, said that people either going to love it or hate it. The divided opinion is expected.

        • I totally agree with everything you said. My problem with the people who hate it are the reasons why they hate it and the type of people who hate it. Don't like how the story went(Joel), too long, couldn't gel with the characters etc. These are all perfectly understandable reasons. But a lot of people literally will not accept any part of the game based on the fact of how and what happened to Joel and playing as Abby accusing the dev as being woke, SJW whatever.. Like they will literally make up other excuses because of these two things. I've seen loads of people say things like the graphics are are S*** because of this like c'mon man that's absurd.. This world has gone to crap and hating or being offended by something is the new cool.

          • +3

@Justin9mm: It's a fictional story and part of the problem was part 1 was too successful. There are signs that part 2 was an afterthought. Abby's father looks different between part 1 vs part 2.

The main issue is that both sides feel quite strongly. People who loved the story could assume too much what the other side is trying to indicate. Both sides need to be open minded, to be honest.

If you think those people are wrong on the SJW warrior comment, then it is not good to assume everyone who dislikes the story are like that and completely dislikes it.

I believe if Naughty Dog is unwilling to take on any criticism on TLOU part 2 and continue down this it's Neil's way and the high way, it is not good. The over use of time jumps isn't something most fans want moving forward. It was so obvious that Neil knew the TLOU part 2 won the game of the year in advance (due to Covid, the game award video was pre-recorded). The slight arrogance shown by Neil towards Ghost of Tsushima wasn't nice. Yes, we get due to how the votes from critics / game reviewers have much higher weight, TLOU part 2 would win, but don't ignore the fan voting result.

        • +2

I was too busy enjoying playing the game haha. The dynamics, controls, fight scenes, were all so intense. I was just loving every minute of gameplay

          • +2

@onlinepred: I was one of those who didn't like the story, but yeah man, the atmosphere, controls, fights…. so good.

I enjoyed it much more when I replayed it a year later. I think it's a great game.

            • @Sxio: Yea I was getting a bit sick of parts of it, story wise, but gameplay wise, man what a freaking epic game.

  • +5

This price being a historical low proves just what a rip off Digital is.

Think I paid $19 or $21 about 6 months ago

    • Agree, Digital is rarely a bargain unless it's an exceptional product you know you'll re-play.

      • +3

Yeah digital is usually overpriced on console, which is why you should never buy the digital version of the console because its cheaper.
You will easily lose out in the long run by the price difference with physical games.

        • not to mention you have best of both words - ability to buy both physical and digital.

        • You get to trade them in too, I'm very happy with it.

  • +4

    Outstanding game.

Game of the year and quite possibly game of the generation for me.

  • +2

    Great game.
This game made me enjoy letting my playing character killed so many times, especially during "that boss fight".
Has any other game ever done that? Probably not. That's how good the plot is.

  • +3

16 months after and the game is still triggering some people.

A lot of people didn't like the story because they didn't play the game.

Some played the game and didn't like the story.

But you can't come and tell others that most people disliked the story.

    • +4

The real cause of the toxicity is the game's defender's imo. The subreddits are so ridiculously over the top.

      • -2

There were two main sources of the hate, which became very toxic quickly as they had no real arguments.
        1. Those that were not comfortable with their sexuality
        2. Those that couldn't deal a certain event/plot direction

That's where it all started, and now it's just the defenders voices who's are a louder now. TBF, people are just super emotional with this game, and will go into GREAT detail of minute points to explain why they didn't like it, meanwhile nearly every other game made can't hold a candle to it. So it's a very strange thing.

        • +2

I guess when something is so amazingly popular, it has a more visible population of the 1% of nuts who act crazy toxic on the internet.

I agree though. Very strange. I couldn't care less if someone doesn't like the thing I like. But I totally had some dude scream at me on reddit. I'm 40 but it was still a pretty strange feeling reading his responses. All I said was I liked the first better. I still like the first better but the 2nd is amazing in a different way.

        • +1

I think people need to stop spreading false information.

People who played part 1 and enjoyed it are unlikely to have issue with their sexuality or have issues with LGBTQ. How can they played part 1 (including the expansion pack), loved the game, knew that Ellie is a lesbian and whinge and complain about that in part 2?

From what I can gathered, there are people who actually have no issue with "that" event and still dislike the game. What I read is that those people are perfectly fine with that event. To them, that event raised the expectation (because if the writers had the guts to do that, they certainly have a trump card at the end), but that high expectation was not delivered by the end of the game for them.

For me, I get the story, but I feel there is too much hype before and after the game release. It is very difficult to write a revenge story to impress (it pretty much has to follow a certain flow… it is revenge so someone has to *** first. Problem for me is that reminds me of part 1, then the end also reminds me of part 1. Once again, it is an ending that will divide opinions. Yes, I get it, there is a good / legit reason why it is mission unaccomplished yet again.

A concern I have with part 2 is that it is a game that due to its unbelievable, near flawless delivery of integrating LGBTQ element into the game, so many tech aspects of it being so good, being really bold in certain parts of the story, and willingness to do things the tough way, ANY attempt to criticise the game, even if the intention was good, would upset fans of the game or come out as overly critical. Worse, you could get tagged for not being open minded.

I just think it is best not to hype the game up too much for new players.

      • I mean have you seen the TLOU2 sub?

You will probably find people who dislike the story (mostly around the way it was delivered and some of the bits) would indicate "some" people dislike the story.

On the other hand, there is a strong tendency of people who loved the story indicating "most" people who dislike the story are certain stereotype. You, yourself used "a lot" of people who dislike the story are… Are you positive about that?

You guys need to bear in mind that there are people who dislike part 2 actually are big fans of part 1. They still appreciate the effort went into part 2 (especially the graphics and animation side). The sad reality is that those people actually wanted to love the story and had high expectation going into the story. Also, do bear in mind, those people did NOT rate the game as 0 or 1. They still rated the game 6 or 7 (and these are the people who have issues with the story, again, I emphasis that a lot of them have issues around the certain aspects and the way the story was delivered).

Personally, I prefer to tell people that you will most likely either love it or dislike it a lot. It's unlikely you are kind of in a the middle ground (it could happen, but just unlikely).

      A game review is subjective.

Not really a bargain as it regularly goes on sale for much cheaper.

I recently picked up the steel book version for $30.

  • Call me weird but I prefer digital copy to physical copy.
Not interested in owning this game, but if I were I'd bite at this.

    • Starting to like digital more and more because with PS5 and Series X, with fast game load, you start to dislike swapping discs.
Not interested in owning this game digitally. Thinking about selling my physical copy of the game (or trade in the game to EB).

It's getting a bit annoying with all these PS5 enhanced version of games being sold as a new edition with DLC @ PS5 game RRP price. While I support both camps, Sony, you are really pushing it a bit too far. I cannot believe for holiday 2021, the new first party exclusives are Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite vs nothing from Sony.

  • If it was on Xbox, you'd know what that means.

  • Got a physical for less than $30. I don't think a digital for $39 is a good deal tbh
