Why This Look among Young Males?

Im a old guy but see this "new " type of image everywhere on social media with younger guys particularly

Even my grandson wants to adopt this look of being muscular with tattoos and "gangster" type look?

usually chest neck tatts, muscular look with chain around their neck

Not eshays ….totally different, usually these are males in their mid 20's to even 30's

The question is…why?

started it recently and almost finished. i think the other characters make the show. he also seems to have poorer acting chops compared to the others.

I guess the idea of wanting to look muscular isn't exactly new?

And I think the term eshay is better suited.

    • no eshay is the skinny type baggy pants look, this one is the gangsta type look with a chain etc

      • +1

What age group are we talking about here? Most young males between 12-20 or so are gonna want to be eshays bahhh

        • No that definitely isnt the eshay look most of them are skinny little rats in short shorts and TNs

I think you've said it yourself - social media. Just following the current trend, making sure they fit in.

'Noooooo! you're not allowed to be physically fit and enjoy body art!'

I would say there are young men that emulate their sport icons. Sounds like you're describing MMA fighters.

It's good to see there are some positives to China taking over the region

    • China is gearing up for a war. Makes sense.

    • Wow, commies only allow women. Stupid lefties /Ss

  • Yeah, it’s a thing for some, I guess it’s a fashion of sorts. It’s been pretty common on the Gold Coast for a while. Back when Gold Coast airport used to function as a regular airport (pre covid), I used to be a amazed at how many neck tattoos I saw compared to my home town of Sydney.

Lmao classic example of old man shouting at clouds.

No the look isn't "everywhere" you've been clicking on people's profiles and the social media AI has been matching you to those trends.

    Ok boomer

It's a valid question, Rob Henderson thinks this type of behaviour has something to do with a little discussed sexual-socio dynamic between male and females, at a societal level.

For example, researchers are seeing an increasing tilt towards semi pornographic female social media profiles, which they noted was more likely to be done in places of high income inequality, arguably in the hope it may catch a decreasing number of attractive males. Attractive being contextual, e.g. wealthy, educated, etc. However males generally look to partner with equivalent or lower females, so may be looking to partner with said wannabe-pornstars.

    • Your two paragraphs can be summed up in one word - hypergamy.

      • +1

In relation to males, they select across and down the social/competency hierarchy.

        Presume therefore you meant hypogamy?

  • Sounds like a newer version of the hairy chests and medallions of the 1970’s and I still can’t get that image out of my head either. So same old same old in a different edition.

    • Not really

    • +3

Every woman knows if you can't support a medallion, you can't support a family.

Its a simple explanation… Primitive psychology at work in young females attracts them to the "alpha male" which they believe are those that are "muscular with tattoos". This stereotype form factor is also promoted by media (e.g. Love Island etc), social media and sports stars.

It's ironic that as females get older they realise this type of partner is often the wrong choice so look for the opposite i.e. white collar worker with money since their primitive psychology drivers are now being overriden by psychology from "lessons learnt".

What does this mean for young males… you need to display the traits of an "alpha male" to attract young naive females. Simple.

    • +7

Those girls are not wife material.

    • +1

Pretty close to mark here. You just need to add that woman will always look for the best 'deal' they can attract when they get to a certain age. Meaning a man who can provision them and their offspring the best.

Young woman will always be attracted to the muscular 'alpha' type but eventually grow out of it when they realise they are not a safe bet in the long-run, it's evolutionary. Men traditionally have had no qualms about leaving a woman 'holding the baby' and clearing out to either find a younger female or pursue other activities.

Just another sheep, he hasn't grown a personality of he's own yet.

  • I’m in my late 30’s with no tattoos. Tattoos are permanent and I’m still sure how they will look on 60, 70, 80 and 90 year old necks. Especially some symbol or word that the person liked when they were 21.

    • +1

yeah I don't see the appeal in being imprinted with a word in a language you don't understand, or some lame slogan as if you'll forget to do it if you don't print it on your body, or some image that isn't good enough to frame and hang on your wall.

It must be addictive or something - I know people who just keep going back for more.

At least it's self inflicted and doesn't affect anyone else. Of all the crap things people do, I'm happy for them to knock themselves out with this one.

  • Why…
Fashion? How should they look in your opinion?
    Instagram?
David Beckham/Connor McGregor + all other athletes/sports people

  • Tattoos are a fad. Just like other fads it will fade almost as quickly as it rose. I reckon that when that happens there will be big money in tattoo removal as well as the plastic surgery to fix botched tattoo removal.

Another recent example is those ear rings that leave a large (2-3 cm) hole in your ear lobes.

I know someone who's approach was to wait 9 months - if they still wanted the same tattoo then they would go ahead. Stops it being an impulse decision.

    • Thank-you, I needed a visual as I had no idea. I am not a fan of the look but each to their own.

  • Question is why not

  • The question is why do you care what they do.

I love minding my own business.

  • If you "love minding my own business" why did you stick you nose in this thread?
