MacBook Air M1 Wobbly, Creaky, Broken

My macbook wobbles like hell on the right side. I've been using it for 9 months. Also creaks loud when pressing the bottom. I really cannot tolerate this issue so I was wondering how I should deal with it. Will apple repair this thing? I heard stories of people getting no luck at stores because the issue was dismissed. There's also no post-in service to apple's repair facility here, living in Sydney. Also, should I go to a local Authorised Service Provider or Genius Bar?

  • I've been using it for 9 months

You can ask apple to see what they say…

Raising it after 9 months, I don’t like your chances ( irrespective of the brand ). Won’t know until you ask Apple…

Macbook wobble is a known issue so you have a fair chance of resolution

    Will apple repair this thing?

One sec, let me call Tim Apple and see what he says.

Why don't you contact Apple to get informed of your options?

My best guess is a swollen battery. Get in touch with Apple, if it is under warranty you should be fine.

Get in touch with Apple. By Law they must make their devices fit for purpose, and yours isn't.

    achew
    'scuse me

    joke
what an MacBook with a fault? Never! according to the fanbois, Macs never get problems are indestructible and last a zillion years, that's why they're so well built and expensive? LOL /joke

You'll have better luck with Apple than an authorised repairer.

I had the same issue with my M1 macbook. The thing wobbles left to right, unfortunately only service ATM is through authorised repairers. I will be going to get the whole thing swapped out once apple re-opens in VIC.

The stopgap repair method was the repairer loosed the bottom case screws and retightened them but only helped for a day or two. Apparently is a well known issue.

    • You mean you're planning on replacing the macbook? Doesn't it have to be within 2 weeks of purchase?

      • No, it can be replaced under warranty

I spoke to apple already and they will swap it out. That’s the thing with apple, yeah sometimes you get a dud. But they are very helpful.

The have the ability to make exceptions, Also under Australian consumer law if it is a major failure it has to be replaced or refunded. I would argue that being unable to type because the computer is rocking back-and-forth is enough reason

        • They agreed to swap it out over the phone? Whaaaat - this goes against everything I've heard about apple support. Can you pls give more info?

@Sadness: I’ve spoken to the lead, had a technician come and diagnose the problem and it was documented.

I have been invited to bring the product back in when the stores open for an exchange.

            • @meowsers: I'm past the time frame for technical support. How would you recommend I approach this issue? Is there phone number I should call? Thank you so much.

                @Sadness:

I'm past the time frame for technical support.

It still really doesn't matter, they are still obliged and will give you technical support way after the 3 months timeframe.
This is Apple support phone number 1300‑321‑456
I recommend that you ask to speak to a senior advisor as they usually are really helpful.

                • @jayboi: Thanks! Should I be asking them for a technician to come in and look at my issue, or a replacement? My macbook happens to be a custom model and takes a month to ship, so is it possible they can offer a refund?

@Sadness: I dont really know about the technician coming to you, It doesn't hurt to ask. But I think they may just end up giving a refund

I just got my very first macbook! Shivers, it's a beauty, no youtube, crappy maps, no live battery percentage.
After having my first Apple product (an S6) for 2 years it is a learning curve. Its mechanical silence switch was the only avantage over its lame performance.
Ordered a dock from Amazon, magnetic charging cables from ebay to keep battery between 20 and 80%.
Now so far the 8k TV demo file does not play even my first generation i7 has no issues with the windows player downscaling to 4k.

Love the oled display and found a Typo army style case at Cotton on for $5.

Getting the internet from the Galaxy S21u via bluetooth is no issue on the Acer notebook or the A20 phone. How come this is so hard to do and speed limited on the Apple?

Wow cool story, how does this wonderful comment help OP ?

Contacted apple support and asked to see a senior advisor, and he immediately offered to send a technician in. Apparently you need some form of documentation of the issue before you can ask for a refund/replacement.

    • Ok, let me know how it goes

      • They said they'd pick it from my home next week, replace the battery and bottom case and have it back within a few days. No issues with support, they were great.

The MacBook has returned… and the wobble is worse. Its no longer creaky, though. I'm going to call them up but this time ask for a refund.

    • Setting up another repair technician. If they can't find the reason for the issue, Apple says they'll start looking into other options (replacement/refund)
